First-time kitchen remodeler's concern re layout

We have decided to re-do the kitchen in a 50-year old house that we just bought. We asked an architect to help design, but we aren't sure we got the layout right. The kitchen opens into the family room. The island is like a separator.

From Kitchen

For one, the dishwasher seems to be in a wrong spot - it'll block some cabinets when open, which means unloading won't be easy. We want a lazy susan in the corner near the current dishwasher. If we move the dishwasher to the other side of the sink, will there be enough space to open the dishwasher door freely? Should we reduce the size of the island (it is counter-height and we plan to ask for a 1.5' overhang instead of the 1' shown).

Second, what would be a good spot for a trash pullout?

Really appreciate suggestions/advice. TIA!
