Caulk or grout between granite counter and travertine backsplash?
Comments (3)I was hoping for some expert advice on this. I cross-posted this message in the kitchen forum as you know, sorry for that. I'm just so desperate for some good advice. I'm nervous about approaching this with him...any ideas on how to go about it? Also, did you see my question about the "grout removal tool" someone mentioned? What is that and how does it work? Also, have you ever worked with split face travertine? He used way too much grout on that and then left a lot of there to dry (so it is still there.) Looking like lovely grouty travertine....See MoreJoint between corian counter and unglazed tile backsplash wall
Comments (6)"Which should I use on the corian/tile backsplash junction: silicone or water-based caulk? " If the area is silicone contaminated you likely have little choice but to use silicone, but even then you need to get the area as clean as possible. Naphtha seems to work better than other solvents. If you get the silicone level low enough new silicone caulk should work fine. Its chief drawbacks are being a PITA to apply and clean up, a limited number of colors, and it is not paintable (not an issue in this application). I have noticed a lot of poorly done tile joints lately. Wall tiles sitting tight on counters leaving no real space for caulk. Bathrooms seem to be even worse. Wall tiles so tight against the floor of the shower you can only make a large cove of caulk instead of a narrower joint that is less prone to damage from cleaning (leading to the inevitable leaks)....See MoreBest caulk for backsplash(limestone) / countertop(granite) joint?
Comments (2)Home Depot has a pretty good selection its not with caulk its with the grout, usually. Look at the big ends of the tube usually some has smeared and dried, there you can get a good idea of the final color. You should be able to get something that will go nicely. To keep it from smearing into the grout on the wall i put a strip of blue painters tape along the wall about 1/8 " away from the joint. I prefer thinner caulk lines you could go a little further away if you wanted a wider line....See MoreHairline crack in grout between counter & backsplash - problem or not?
Comments (9)There shouldn't be grout between the counter and bs because grout doesn't give. When transitioning from your horizontal counter to your vertical bs, you use caulk, only. So now someone, your GC is fine, has to remove the grout in that line, probably with a multimaster, and replace it with caulk, being mindful of the type of caulk with respect to your chosen materials....See Morecorgimum
