Show me pictures of your black (laminate) countertops!

Because our island countertop will be the focal point and more expensive, we want basic black countertops for our perimeter cabinets. I think Paperstone is very cool, but I am planning on laminate for the savings. I am looking at plain black laminate, but also Formica's Mineral Jet, Oiled Soapstone and a couple others.

If you have relatively inexpensive black countertops, I would love to see pictures and know what you used.

If you are using a patterned formica like the mineral jet or oiled soapstone, they are not a uniform black, so you shouldnt experience the problem that riverrat has with uniform black.

There is a kitchen in the threads with Wilsonart Oiled soapstone in here, but I can't find it.

I have a matte black laminate counter top in our second kitchen/potting room/junk room/butlers pantry. LOL! It really has turned out to be a catch all room because it's the first room coming in from the carport area. Thank goodness we have a front entry for guest. I have to warn you that the black laminate will show EVERYTHING from scratches, dust and rings from drinking glasses. I really don't care for it. I am constantly wiping and cleaning this countertop even if it's clean. I'm so glad I didn't put it in the main kitchen. Waaay too much upkeep IMO. Instead of replacing it I'm going to sponge paint this countertop like equest17 on the home decorating forum did to her Before And After-Avocado Bathroom Update. Amazing transformation! I have ordered the Mineral Jet formica in the radiance finish. It's not here yet so I can't post any pics but I will as soon as they are installed!

Kees_Lover, Thank you for sharing your landscape prints framed showing me so many different ways a picture can be framed and look nice. I really do appreciate all the helpful people on this decorating site. I am now thinking that I like my print despite how much green it has so I have to decide on a frame. I will try to take pictures tomorrow. My sofa and recliner are called taupe but to me is a leather by Natuzzi that is more on the beige taupe side and is very neutral but does not like gold frames and since I have two glass lamps with chrome bases and chrome filaments on top of the very white shades on the glass tables next to the sofa and a triangle glass table in front with the green glass edging, BM Bone White Walls, White baseboard molding and Brazilian Cherry Floors, I am wondering if a Bronze frame will go or will it clash with the sofa or the chrome? Bronze is more of a brown right? I also like a brown espresso very ornate frame but I wonder if it would be too dark. My picture if of Japanese Maple trees with dark Pine Trees and some other lighter green trees and some trees with orange and yellow but the green dominates with red the second color. There is a bridge and a green pond probably from algae. My room needs some color so bad and I wish I had chosen a dark brown or Mahogany sofa and not taupe years ago since it took me a year to buy some furniture when I bought my first home. Do you think a 40"X 30"size print would be good that will get bigger with a mat and frame for an 81" long sofa? I never bought pictures before except for the small framed prints in 2007 from JCPenney. I went there and they have no more framed prints for sale in their store.

We are looking for laminate in the that color family, too. We also have those oak cabinets! We are considering Wilsonart's Pearl Soapstone, or Nevamar's Veto Proof. I actually came to the forum to look for "real life" photos. Good luck, and I'll be interested to see what you choose!

We don't have them yet, but we will be getting Cambria Edinborough. We wanted something that didn't lean towards green, or blue, or yellow, and didn't have lots of sparkle. hlove, your kitchen is wonderful! I love the vintagey look and the colors you've chosen. I love those pyrex bowls, and am looking forward to some open shelving in our remodel, to put out ours, along with the jadeite I've got tucked here and there. The laminate looks great, and I like it with that edge. Did you have a special width done or is that standard? Angie DIY, I love those countertops, and am really going back and forth between a darker laminate, like this one, but basalt slate is the one I'd chosen, and a lighter one, like hlove's, but a bit more gray (formica has a lighter soapstone color I like a lot). I love the dark with the wood, but am not sure if it'll suck up too much light in my small dark kitchen. Thanks for the pictures, all this is helping my decision making.

I have been looking at Formica's Basalt Slate - very dark grey with lighter veining - has a matte uneven finish. I found another at the home store this weekend, but I can't find the sample - I thought was some type of ebony - another dark grey with more mottled, gloss finish.

The plain colors would tend to show more dust, everything - I have a gas stove with gloss black top I am constantly cleaning.

I just installed Basalt Slate in a kitchen where the homeowner had moved from a large kitchen with antiqued soapstone countertops, to a smaller kitchen (with 20% of the budget).

She reports that several people have said, at first glance, that she was lucky to get soapstone in the new kitchen too.

It doesnt fool anyone to touch, but it has a nice appearance and the textural quality has been pretty forgiving, so far.

lat61, I just posted a new message to you but I'm posting here too in case you didn't see it or are getting emails about posts to this message. Hope these help. I got the formica fx radiance finish and the mineral jet has shadings of brown and gray along with the black. I love them so far!

okepokesfan -- Thanks so much for the pictures. The countertops really look like they have some depth and sparkle! Does the counter "read" as black most of the time? Your captions said the flash was lighting up the pictures.

Your color scheme seems pretty similar to mine, with the medium/warm cabinets and dark counters. What is the wood/stain on your cabinets? So helpful to see in real life what I think I am planning.
