Thanks everyone for your ideas. I could move the kitchen to the dining room, I think there would be enough space there to do what I envision. I would make the entrance more open and move the door to the pantry entering from the back wall of the kitchen. That would make the pantry closer to the kitchen and eliminate one door in the mudroom. The downside, I just don't think I could put the dining room and the cafe all in the same space. It would look like a long room of tables. Also, would it be weird to have the kitchen so far away from the rest of the house. Below is the original floor plan. I asked the draftsman to move the kitchen because I wanted the window like in my inspiration picture and to add a big island. It's my fault that I didn't communicate properly. I may just go back to the original plan for the kitchen and forget the windows and the farmhouse sink. I would make the island shorter but wider and closer to the range, so that it fits in the L shape. I would also change the entrance into the family room so that the kitchen was centered in the opening to the great room. Any other suggestions or comments about the rest of the floor plan would be helpful. My husband really wants the three car garage, so I don't want to make it smaller. We won't have a basement so no basement stairs. I'm not sure where the awkward corner is, if anyone sees it could you point it out to me.

Cooking stations in islands are hugely problematic. They are big safety hazards unless you have a lot of clearance around them. They're difficult and EXPENSIVE to vent. It's a LOT more expensive than locating it elsewhere. You're planning on saving money by creating a drywall pantry, but you're actually spending that savings (and more) by locating the range in the island. As was mentioned, telescopic vents aren't warrantied with ranges. And, more to the point in space planning, they won't work with a range because they take up room in the cabinet below a cooktop, and ranges don't have cabinets below them to hide the infrastructure of the popup. It would take all kinds of jury rigging to be able to locate a popup elsewhere and still have it pop up behind a range, and any tampering with one also voids the warranty. So, even if you could put a full sized cabinet behind the range to house the mechanisms of the popup, it'd be pointed the wrong way, and modifying it to point the right way voids the warranty. The best option for venting an island cooking station remains an overhead vent, especially since it works with the laws of physics to capture steam, grease, and smoke that naturally rise. My suggestion would be to locate the sink on the island instead of the range, and place the range on the (almost) exterior wall where you have the sink. It would fit perfectly centered on the 58" section, and you could have a prep sink adjacent to it under the window if you wanted. I like the option with the pantry in the corner and the desk under the window. That gives much better flow. Is there a reason you're not using the 36" of wall space on the other side of the glass door? That would be a perfect place for organizer cubbies or a "china hutch" type cabinet, whichever one would work better functionally for your family.

You guys are awesome! I tried to incorporate everyone suggestions (because they were all great!) and this is what I've come up with. Since I'm not sure which of the kitchen walls are load bearing, both designs incorporate the possible need for a beam to extend down, which is fine. LAYOUT A: large pass-through looking into the living room and the doorway to the kitchen has been expanded. Basement stairs and corner coat closet have also been removed and the doorway into the addition has been widened. Hoping the outer facing cabinets around the beam can act as a place to put keys and bags, otherwise, we have no entryway. Concern: I'm a messy cook and with that being said, I'm questioning whether the stove should be below the pass-through because I'm envisioning grease splattering and sauce flying into my living room. LAYOUT B: The same as layout A but with a smaller pass-through that begins after the stove. My concern for this is despite the pass-through being just shy of 5ft wide, based on this mock-up, it doesn't look like it does much to open the room. Would this be a waste of money to even bother with? Here's a loose floorplan of both A and B. What are your thoughts? The fridge jams me up a bit because it seemed too bulky near the kitchen entrance and moving it towards the addition opening made it too crammed again.

I should also add our style is mostly transitional with a rustic edge. I am drawn to mid century furniture but wouldn't want my whole house to have that masculine "mad men" look. Again, thank you for any advice you can spare.
