Kohler stages 33 + prep sink OR the big bad stages 45 only?

I have a question about the kohler stages sink. I have room for the 45 but it seems SO massive. Before discovering the kohler stages I had planned a 33" single bowl sink on my island and a 15" prep sink on the perimeter. Now I wonder about the 33" stages + 15" prep sink OR the full on 45" stages sink and no prep sink. Currently I'm used to using a fairly small sink, I have a double sink, inner dimensions are about 14" on each side. So moving up to the 19" in the bowl of the stages 33" is already an upgrade for me (even my planned prep sink is bigger!). Any thoughts out there?

Stages is a prep sink. If you're going to take advantage of its features, it's the place you prepare your ingredients. Since you have room for it, go for the big one. Part of the point is that you can use the accessories to make it into counter space as well.

OTOH, if you tend to leave a lot of dirty dishes in your sink, hide them there, having a separate clean-up sink for hiding the dishes is a good idea.

Alternatively, have you seen the Galley sink??

I can't even imagine why someone would buy a Stages without using it for prep. That's its entire purpose. It's like buying a Viking so you have somplace nice to store your sweaters while planning to cook in a toaster oven.

Hi, I got your email with this question. (You were right that I haven't checked here in a long time.) I thought that I would give you my answer in the forum. Here are the measurements that you wanted: The depth of the main sink is about 9 1/4" plus about 1.5 inches of soapstone countertop. I think that it's plenty deep. The measurement of the internal part of the sink from front to back is 15.75" and the width (not including the 12" shelf) is 19.5". That 15.75" is the actual internal measurement as some space is taken by the ledge that holds the cutting boards. Although I use my Stages solely as a prep sink, I don't see any reason why you couldn't use it as your main sink. The shelf could hold either dirty dishes or dishes waiting to be rinsed. The only issue is the cutting boards. I don't use the plastic ones much but I do keep the mahogany board in the sink most of the time. It is big and heavy and you'll have to figure out a place to put it when you're doing dishes. But if you can find a solution for that I think that you'll be fine. Hope that helps.

I'm in a position to answer this.....literally. I'm sitting at my island which is a little over 10' long. Next to me is a drawer with a measuring tape, so I got it out. I have a 33 on the side, at the end. It will be fine. Don't forget, if you put the cutting board in, then there is only an 18" hole. I have my sink in a custom cabinet, which I had designed so that under the drain board side I could have a knife drawer, with a double trash can pullout below it. The knife drawer is a little shallower to be able to fit in under the drain board part. Try to keep your faucet, soap, airswitches, etc to the left of center. This allows you to access the sink from the short side and the long side. I use that more than I thought I would.

brittu; I have the 45 version and I really like it. I find that I typically do not use the wood cutting board and the trays at the same time. What I really like the plastic trays are for using spice rubs on meats that I'm taking to the grill, and also for putting hot soapy water in the smaller one for holding meat-contaminated knives, so I don't contaminate the sink with just those. A couple months ago I posted my personal review of the sink. You may have read it already -- I do want to point out that I did not use the accessory tray below, but rather, put a drawer and a garbage pullout below the shallow end of the sink. I would def use the sink again -- if I was cramped for space I'd go with the smaller, but I do love the large size. Here is a link that might be useful: my review of the stages sink

It looks like the actual sink part of the sink is 19" wide, which is 2" smaller than the sink I have now. I really like the sink I have now- it's a single bowl and much more useful than the double bowl sink I used to have. However I think that what I have now is about the smallest I would be comfortable with for cleaning purposes. The Kohler is a LOT deeper than my current sink, but I think the small bowl size would be an issue cleaning. I'd rather have the whole sink be a bowl and just prep on the counter like I do now.

I do intend to use the stages prep area to its fullest extent, just wondering if the volume of the 33 is enough...guess that's a personal decision. Anyone have the 33" as their only sink with regrets or no regrets? The 45" just seems SO enormous.

After seeing the 33 in person I didn't think that the actual sink area was quite big enough (for me). I was close to choosing the 45 but then I went even bigger....

Although I haven't seen anyone else use it, I fell in love with the 60" triple Kohler ProTaskcenter that was at our local showroom. I'll be using it in our new build and can't wait!
