free undermount sink with granite install?

Hi,

Our potential granite installer offers a free undermount SS sink with the installation/granite. I think this is a pretty common offer.

It seems fine...style and size is what I'd have chosen to purchase: slightly rounded, double sink. Both about the depth of the ceramic sink I presently have and am happy with. The smaller sink large enough to be of use.

The brand is "Regal" and I'm not finding that brand anywhere to see reviews/pricing of it. I see that it has some insulating material on the bottom. And he says it is 16 gauge.

Anyone have an opinion?

I have trouble getting too excited about a sink BUT I wouldn't want an issue down the road because of an inferior product, especially with the hassle and expense of removing.

I'm getting granite counters too (hopefully templating this thursday) and these fabricators also offer a free sink. It is a standard double bowl, 18 gauge. I want a 60/40 with a deep 10" side, because that's what I'm used to. Since I was going to purchase one myself, I went ahead and got a 16-gauge. Ordered it from galaxytoolsupply.com It came in 3 days and I love it! Has the grids, and for $16 a cutting board - total was $235!!

I don't know how easy it is to replace a sink once you have granite installed, so I would rather purchase the sink I want and can live with "forever"

It's fairly common to offer a free sink with a granite install, though they usually still charge for the cutting and polishing the opening. It's not extremely difficult to replace an undermount sink, IF the cut out is the right size.

babyboomer1001: 100% silicone is perfect caulk between a sink flange and the bottom of stone. Polyseamseal and other Latex caulks are not; they do not have the adhesive stickiness or flexibility of silicone. It's best if you can pull your sink, clean the sink flange and stone bottom, recaulk with silicone and reinstall the sink. If this isn't reasonably possible, use a stiff plastic shim or plastic laminate to gouge the caulk out, clean the gap with acetone, and recaulk with silicone. Ignoring a leaking sink flange can have catastrophic consequences if your top has been "rodded" or reinforced with steel. If the fabricator used the wrong rod and/or the wrong bedding the rod can rust and blow up your top. I've fixed about 8 of these so far and it runs around $1,000.00-$1,600.00.

Mine is not sandwiched between plywood and granite. There was no plywood top to my sink base. My sink is adhered to the granite with silicone. They also siliconed wood strips to the underside all around as well. The sink clips weren't used. After install, the sink was held in place by plywood t-bars. These are underneath the sink and are removed after the silicone cures (72 hrs I believe). I also worried about the strength of silicone alone, and my installer told me that he has stood in his sink, and it didn't budge.

I replace sinks for a living and have yet to pull a countertop to replace a sink except in solid surface. You tap the cabinet front off, change the sink, and put it back on. I've done it twenty times. Did it the day before yesterday. For easiest sink changes, insist that your fabricator strap, not insert fasten, your sink in place with a Hercules Universal Sink Harness (Braxton Bragg) or a Sink Strap (Regent Stone Products) or two. Two easily accessible bolts instead of 12 inaccessible ones. I'd change a strapped apron undermount in a hour at most. Make sure he puts a nice radius at your sink cut-out too, 3/8" minimum. No pencil edge, please.

It's fine if it is the sink size and shape you want. 16 gauge is good too. I ended up supplying the SS sink which I purchased online, because I was adamant it be rectangular single-bowl with an offset drain. The free ones that my granite fabricator had were all D-shaped double bowls of various sizes, so they weren't what I wanted. The fabricator was totally fine with me providing the sink, as long as they could have it at the shop for the templating.
