poll - favorite swing out shelf for lower corner cabinet?

The cabinet maker sent me a link to one he was considering for us. Best advice I get is from GW!! So please tell me, what brand do you favor and why?

BTW, this is for an L-shaped counter. To the right of the L is the sink cabinet. to the left of the corner cab is the range. This pic shows the "L" cab without the doors. Range doesn't have door in it either. So you can see the reason why we want one that pivots out. (Unless you have another suggestion).

I really liked the kidney bean shaped Lemans Hafele ones---they are pricier but seemed much sturdier than the Rev-A-Shelf ones. (I haven't seen the KV one you linked in real life, though, so that might be better too.) We would have gone with the Lemans except that we missed being able to get the bigger one by half an inch of clearance, and the littler one was a waste of space for our cabinet. Got the Hafele Magic Corner instead, which we really like but was $600 or something even with our cabinetmaker's discount (he sold us the inserts at cost)---ouch! However, it turned out to be the only thing that came anywhere close to using all of our space that also worked with what we needed to store there (frequently used appliances, so the nice solutions with rollout trays that some GWers have used didn't make sense for our kitchen). Good luck---corners are tricky no matter how you slice or dice it!

I have the Knape & Vogt blind corner pullout. I haven't used it yet, but have played with it quite a bit while it sits in the cabinet in my basement. I start the remodel in one week.....

It is super strong and sturdy- weighs a ton. I don't think it has a ton of space in the 'baskets', but I'm planning on using it for cookware, and the separate baskets will keep everything neat and orderly. It has a weight limit of 40 pounds per side, but that is quite a bit of weight for kitchen items.

I was unsure about what blind corner pull out to buy as well. I'd tried a few of them and read a ton of reviews, and didn't like the prices on any of them. This one came in the cabinet I got on a clearance sale for $200 (cabinet WITH blind corner unit), so I figured for that price, I could learn to love it! I just emptied my current blind corner cabinet with no pull out and found things I forgot I had......so this will be a huge improvement!

"...corner susans...don't quite look like the rest of the kitchen..." Huh???? They looked just fine in our old kitchen w/partial overlay doors. Our lazy susan was the only thing in our kitchen that looked and performed as well at demo as it did at installation 13 years earlier. I wholeheartedly recommend corner susans. As to stuff falling off, if your cabinets are made so the back and side walls closely follow the contour of the round shelves, there are no problems. However, I don't know if all cabinetmakers, especially small custom shops, are able to (or willing to) make them that way. We had that kind (curved walls) in our old kitchen w/builder-grade cabinets...and that susan was great! It held all our pots & pans, colanders, cake & pie tins, and various serving pieces. Everything was in front...you simply rotated the susan, the doors rotated inside, and you stopped where the item you wanted was...and it was right in front of you...no digging around for things. Nothing ever fell off. The hardware worked smoothly the entire 13 years. No taking up aisle space in front of the cabinet when open. No door-banging b/c the door was attached to the susan (like Marcolo's picture). Be aware that if you store smaller items on a blind corner pullout and something falls off, you will have to crawl inside to retrieve the item b/f you will be able to close it. My KD strongly discourages blind corner cabinets b/c of all the complaints she's gotten from customers who insisted on them and then later regreted them. (I thought they looked "cool" the first time I saw them and asked about them. After she showed me how they work, told me about the pitfalls, and told me about all the complaints she's gotten, we decided not to get one.) Other good uses of corners: Drawers (Plllog's kitchen) Corner sink bases (b/c under sink storage is usually poor so you combine them to give you better storage everywhere else.) Installing a 27" or 30" cabinet and turning it 90 degrees to face the back side of the corner...but this only works if the back side is open, like in a peninsula. Yes, some people love their blind corner units, but, to me, they're a "last resort" option...only if absolutely nothing else works. YMMV

Oh thank you all so much for your responses!! It's so helpful... sara the brit: do you have photos of your Ikea corner cab? akchicago- I did consider a corner sink, but I REALLY want to be able to look out to my garden from the sink :) live_wire_oak- I do need to talk with the KD at my cabinet supplier, I know. She is great. But since we're waiting for bids back from the carpenters and haven't as yet totally finalized the space available, I don't want to waste her time yet. (She had completely hammered out our old layout back in January, and then...with advice from this forum... we decided to move the kitchen to a whole different room! So all her work on previous layout was for nought, and I don't want to make her start again till we're sure about the new layout.) It's a difference of 6" on one leg and 18" on the other, which make a lot of difference in our tight layout! I am HOPING to have the numbers this week (it has been 2 weeks already and not knowing what plan we can afford is just killing me!) and then I'll meet with the KD again. Again, thanks to ALL of you who responded, it is unbelievably helpful to get this input. These things are really major splurges for us and I really don't want to spend extra $$ if I don't have to! Lisa - two KD people that I have spoken to said that the voided corner does not provide wider drawers on either side. What am I missing? Nothing as far as I can tell because what they are telling you makes no sense to me at all. If you don't give up 12" of linear space to a Susan, you gain 9" of drawer width (3" goes to spacer at corner). I considered adding a BCC to my sink corner (didn't have space on sink side to do corner Susan) but opted not to because a) it wasn't the right kind of storage for that corner and b) a drawer base was cheaper storage than a BCC. Here's my corner. Drawers & trash pull-outs open. If I had done a BCC, I would have lost the bank of drawers on the right. If I'd had room for a corner Susan, I would have lost 27" of much needed drawer storage. The few items that I would have been able to store in a BCC (ditto for a corner Susan) ended up in a a single drawer in a much roomier cab next to my wall oven. I use the items in the drawers in my prep zone much more regularly than the items I use in the drawer by my oven. A few extra steps now and then is a much better option than extra steps several times a day, IMO. Look at the whole picture when it comes to storage. What you decide for one area affects storage in another. It's a domino effect, IME.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all the input and advice. Sorry for the delayed reply. After spending months agonizing over where the sink and cooktop should be, there were a dozen "smaller" decisions left over to figure out before sign-off earlier this week. But sign-off I did, at long last! I made a bunch of decisions that go entirely against the majority of the advice I got in response to this and other questions I've posted here. Lol! I feel fantastic about the final decisions, but I'm ready to be humble if I get a few big "I told you so"s when I post my reveal photos! In this case, I decided (sorry in advance!) to go with option 2 but leave the cabinets to the right. Thank you so much for pointing out the many factors to consider. It helped me a lot, even if my choice is an unpopular one! My designer has done a few kitchens recently, including at my brother's house, that depart from the usual conventions and include asymmetry or other uncommon choices. They work surprisingly well and are refreshingly modern even when materials and overall feel is traditional. I'm excited! I should add that my drawing wasn't quite accurate - the cabinets to the right of the cooktop are actually shallower floor to ceiling pantry with no counter top surface (though the countertop will run through) so a bit different from what could have been on the left anyway. And the sightline from the front door is directly to the cooktop window. I'm excited about the open feeling that not having uppers in that spot will give, both in terms of creating a new prep spot without something right in front of my face, and as a nice spot for a piece of art visible from the entry, an unexpected pleasure on a kitchen wall. Installation isn't until end of Feb but I'll be sure to post photos as soon as it's all in.

This is the best on the market IMO.

The domestic and Asian versions are no where near the quality or function.

Or...what's on the other side of that pony wall? Could you access that dead corner from the other side with a door or drawers?

To add to BluBird's suggestion...

If you can do it, consider putting in pullouts or drawers in the "dead" corner that face the other side of the peninsula (either the side or the back of the peninsula). Then, on the kitchen side, put in a pullout or drawers that open into the kitchen. You could have your cabinetmaker put in a "wall" b/w the two sections to attach things to. If you don't already have it with your current cabinets, you would need a bit of filler to clear the knobs on your sink base for the kitchen side (unless it has a door w/hinges on the range side).

I think you'll find this is a much better use of space than a blind-corner cabinet (they waste a lot of space and, if anything falls off those swing-outs, you will have to crawl inside to retrieve it b/f you can close the swing-out and door).

Some hardware specialty houses have these systems set up. If you can find one, go. Bring a cereal box, a small appliance, some metal bowls, whatever and see how much they hold.

Of the two you posted, I prefer the Rev a shelf wood classic because the more you get your shape closer to a rectangle, the more you use the full space of your blind corner. A half-moon loses both corners, including the one you could reach on your own.

I have a U-shaped kitchen so I am dealing with two of these corners.

As mentioned above, if you can access the back side of this cabinet, you could save a lot of money by creating one cabinet or set of drawers facing into your kitchen. Then have a cabinet that faces the dining room. We did this on one corner.

On the other corner, we didn't have that option. We did a two-stage Rev-a-Shelf that I have linked below. I love it. I think it uses more of the space than many of these systems. Our cabinet maker got it through his discounts at more like $540.
