would you mix barstool/chair styles?

i'm stuggling with this one and need opinions....my kitchen isn't very large. we will have 3 seats at the island and then a small banquette with two sided built in bench and then probably 2 chairs at that table. the banquette and island are very close to each other. i'm thinking i want to mix styles but could it be too busy in a close area? what would you do?

I think that as long as they have a couple of common elements it should look great. Wood color/type, fabric, a unique curve to the back, arms, whatever. Go for it!

I wouldn't match them. I agree with finding common elements in color, style, finishes, shapes. I would have them similar but different.

Thanks Squirrel! I am shopping ONLINE. I have visited every furniture manufacturer (online) that I could find. I just stumbled on these last night and I loved them too. Today, I went to local distributor's to "see" the finish and quality in person. I don't ask for help, or take the time of a sales agent, because I know I am not buying from them.. I can't, because I purchase either from a NC companies I know, or Lex Furniture in KY, and the savings are tremendous (but the stools are a bit pricey). These are all made by Lorts Furniture. These are it for me... I had posted the other style (which I also loved), but I couldn't find just the right ones! Once I saw these, "they felt right"! I have my order ready to fax, just after the furniture store confirms one final price tomorrow! I feel like a load is off me - and all my main decisions are made! I'll take my time finding just the right coffee tables, lamps and accessories once we move into our new home!

I basically brushed on Liquid Sandpaper (yep -- thats the name of the product) waited about 20 min-30 min or so until the original shiny finish went "cloudy" -- then went ahead and started spraying. In a WELL ventilated area (and use a mask)! LIGHT coats -- almost looks like you'll never finish ((LOL!)) but it works better! Wait about an hour or so in between coats (depends on weather or dryness etc. but thats what worked for me) -- and finally -- a couple of coats of spray-on poly. The key is to wait about 24-48 hours before using them after that final step ..... give the finish a good long time to harden up .....

Thanks folks! I'm going to find out if I can take one home just to try it out. I think it meets our needs, especially since hubby preferred stools and I wanted one with backs as I hope to be spending a lot of time at the island! The tops of the stools are 35" and our island with countertop is slightly over 36", so the stools won't even peek over the countertop at all. Here's another photo of it which gives a better sense of the true scale and dimensions.

Glory, I think you could mix stools with and without backs, as long as they are similar. For example, these stools from Ballard Designs don't match, but to me they feel the same:

My chairs and bar stools are both painted white wood, but totally different styles. I don't think they need to match and probably shouldn't.

Ditto for me. Have them "coordinate," but not be matchy-matchy.

If they compliment each other they'll work fine together. We have 2 backed, metal swivels and 2 non-backed wood stools, all in a darker complimenting color, but completely different styles. The wood stools can be tucked under the overhang and they're easier to move from breakfast counter to island counter when needed.
