Need help decorating a small office

I recently remodeled a small room to use as an office. It was actually a storage closet before. The dimensions are about 12 feet by 10 feet. I'm looking for opinions on how to coordinate a desk, chair and file cabinet so the office is clean, simple and functional. A link to pics of the room is below.

It's hard to tell from the pics but the wall color is a cream/beige while the wall shelves and molding are white. I already have a metal lateral file cabinet (shown in the pics) which I'd like to use instead of buying a new one.

I'm thinking about putting a desk against the wall opposite the file cabinet and a leather swivel chair. I like the Parsons desk in walnut veneer from West Elm (and it's on sale now which is a bonus).

Should I go with the walnut Parsons desk and a black leather swivel chair? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I made an 'office'(computer use only)out of the closet in the bonus room/family room. I have shelves like you, and actually repositioned the shelves, removing one, and bringing another down to desk height~~I thought a desk would take up too much room since they're wider. I purchased a 3-drawer cabinet(could use a file cabinet)that fits perfectly under the 'desk'. You would probably have enough space to put a cabinet/shelf at each end, with a chair between the two. ;o)

Thanks for the reply patty cakes. I like your idea of using a shelf as a desk. I will probably just go with a small desk though, like the Parsons desk.

Any other advice or opinions? Thanks again...

That makes sense; you were thinking about the view from the people you were Skyping with. I put up artwork on the wall behind me at work after one of my visitors pointed out that they were looking at a big blank wall. If you Skype a lot and are worried about impressions, if makes sense to put something back there. Could you put a large plant in the corner behind the recliner? (It could interfere with reclining the chair.) Or choose artwork in colors that are flattering to you, not too busy or distracting. Something that makes a good backdrop, not a statement piece. Save the statement pieces for where you can enjoy them.

I'd say one piece of art about the desk (quite large) and maybe add a plant to bring in some life and green. Not sure where you'd put it as that is up to you but I'd say a desk plant with substantial height to add some more to the wall space

It depends on what you do in the office and how much you want to spend, but I would: Get rid of the rug entirely and leave the floor au natural, but add a desk chair mat under your chair to protect the floor. Add a few tall shelves or bookcases, depending on what you need them for (files vs equipment vs books) -- Ikea has some nice options that aren't expensive and are easy to assemble. I'd add colour to the window covering (different drape? coloured tie?) and then decide if you want art work/photos and/or a corkboard/white board. If your peripherals (like printers, etc) are small, you may want to consider something like Ikea's Kallax series, because they could fit in some of the boxes, while you use others for books or baskets. I wish I'd thought of that before I got the storage unit I did.

If you've got your mind made up re:desk, then you should have it. My space is only about 3' deep, and w/a chair, I would have been sitting in the doorway~~I took the door off and have a curtain panel on each side.

There's a ceiling light, but I also hung wall lamps on each side wall for more direct lighting when using the computer. I have them about 8" from the top of the desk/shelf. I've also hung a large bulletin board on the back wall, with a few wall accessories/family photos. Oh, I didn't mentioned I painted the closet black, including the ceiling~~it makes for a very cozy space, as well as a topic of conversation. ;o)
