What do you put on your kitchen soffits?

I recently removed the wallpaper in my kitchen and have painted it a lovely shade of green( lion by behr). The soffits above my cabinets seem to stand out now more than ever. I was thinking of hanging some white plates on them. Any other ideas?

I've seen woven baskets, decorative plates, Wall Words and copper molds on soffits. Keep in mind that no matter what you end up putting up there, it/they will tend to collect grease and dust.

I did the woven baskets awhile back and rinsed them in hot, sudsy water each spring and fall cleaning.

Sayings stencilled on a soffit can look really elegant if they're done well.

Or, how about a collection of antique signs or antique cooking utensils?

Or, glue up some decorative tiles evenly spaced out.

No odor. But that may also mean no nutrients. My uncle, an old farmer when I was growing up, spread manure on his fields and tilled it in within 24 hours of spreading it so the nutrients would not be lost to the atmosphere. He said what you smell from manure is nutrients going out into the air.

For those w/desks in the kitchen...where do you put your printer?

Mine is in another room, in my Hoosier cabinet. I have a wireless network, and the printer is hooked up to another computer that is on all the time. I rarely actually print, most stuff is printed to Acrobat as a pdf file and saved on my computer. I share the printer and a lot of the folders on both computers so I can go back and forth between them and open, print and manipulate files on either computer. What color do I put on each area of my soffit, trim & ceiling?

I think all white with the center part of the ceiling painted the wall color (with the medallion white) would highlight it best. The potential problem with this is the back wall. Did you consider putting a thin version of the curved arch along the back wall to complete the rectangle? Breaking up the horizontals and verticals will be chopped up, imo.

I think it's 6-1/2 or 7 x 10 including the attic stairs, so it's not teeny tiny, but not huge, either. There are lots of houses in this area from this era with this kitchen but they did a far better job of making it feel spacious and useful than the others. Here's a flip with the same basic kitchen: And yeah, I've been looking at another house where I could double the number of base cabinets by going down to a 24" range, all the way from one cabinet to two, whoohoo! I've lived with smaller kitchens than this, but I think they did a super job of making a small kitchen live large.

i have the ends of wine crates up there. i put sawtooth hangers on the crate ends so they could be hung.

Just make sure to spell any stencils correctly, especially for featured kitchen photo shoots.

Did anyone else see the blue and white kitchen in a National Magazine with the word Vinegarette ? Later reprints of this kitchen's photo cropped off the soffits.

You can decorate using any of your favorite things. Antiques, wine bottles, silk vines & flowers or pottery. It does get very dusty though. I always line the tops of the shelves with newspaper and then replace it once a year. That just eliminates cleaning the tops of the cabinets of dust and grease.
