OT - Bench

There is a thread going on in the Bathroom forum that has me reconsidering a thought I had and I wanted to post the question here because this forum gets so much traffic and thoughtful responses. But it is a bath question not a kitchen question!

I have a 32"X60" shower gutted to the studs in the master bathroom and although not completely set on what I am going to put back in there I thought I would put in a bench. The responses on the bath thread indicate most people that have them don't use them. So if you have a shower large enough, do you have a bench, do you use it?

To sit my shampoo & soap on.

It's rather useless in other requests. I'll tell 'ya. I'm not going to plant my already cold bummy on that marble. There's a showerhead over the bench, but to turn it on I have to deal with the cold water in the pipes.

It looks nice, but who the heck sees it except me as put my foot on it to shave my legs.

We don't have one, but I would probably not use it if we did. However, if this is going to be your forever home to grow old in, you may find it useful in the future. Also a good reason to mount a handheld shower on a bar.

SO much better than the first. :) I'm worried about the human dynamics of the shoe thing, though. This isn't a closet, it's a mudroom. That means wet, possibly muddy shoes, right? Shoes above message center doesn't sound practical. I think if you fitted the bottom of each locker area with a tray for shoes and maybe a little shelf or pouch or basket above it for houseshoes, you have half a chance of them not ending up in a pile on the floor (projecting ahead to the possible larger family). Re the sink: Once it's installed can't you tile the outside side of the grooming tub? Especially if the sink is going to be smaller. Or if the tile won't work, surely you could do metal mirror, or cabinetry, or something else pretty. FRIDGE tub sink really would look best, assuming that the fridge surround gives it enough spacing away from the wall to open fully. If the door swing and other issues keep it at tub FRIDGE sink, you could minimize the impact by putting cabinetry all the way up around each section, instead of just around the fridge. Then they'd echo the look of the lockers on the other side. That would make sense of the arrangement, and, even though it might look a little more closed in, it wouldn't actually be any different, and would look a lot better.

A couple of inconsistencies. "I bought a surplus fireproof cabinet...the insulation was about 4" of what appeared to be firebrick". Note the "fireproof" and the description of insulation. Your saying that your cabinet was designed (albiet 10 years+ ago) as fireproof storage and not a security safe and you describe "insulation" around the unit comparable to the OP's installation description. yet your initial reposnse says "NO it's very little protection in a fire." You point out that the door for the OP's safe is exposed steel. This is an assumption based on the need to access the door to get to the interior. There is no reason that this door couldn't also be easily covered with "insulation" to surround the entire enclosure and I suspect that as originally installed it was. Also exposing the front door of a safe to the interior really doesn't hide it from thieves either. You further state "30 min. rating is generaly considered adequate for houses in reasonable proximity to a fire dept. Most house fires are out in less than 30 min unless it's a remote area." All reasonable statements and basically reinforces my post that the OP's installtion was probably intended as fire-protection as well as security. You are correct in that it is wise to define the materials that you want to protect and verify that the characteristics of the safe match expectations of protection. Fire-ratings are very arbitrary as fire is not an exact science. Ratings are reported in terms of exposure to a standard fire which may or may not have any resemblence to a real fire event. OP should call an installer or the manufacturer and get thier opinion.

Melissa, as you may know, I'm a songwriter/musician. Of all the many cats I've had in my life, only two have been "appreciative" of my playing or singing. My current kitty will abide my singing...in the garden, although she thinks it's an invitation to plop at my feet for *pets*. If I sing in the house, she acts concerned and worried (do I sound like I'm in pain? lol). If I play the piano, she will sit on the deck outside the music room and beg to be let in so she can circle around and around my feet. Her one absolute red line is that I am NOT allowed to talk on the telephone in her presence. For some reason (I'm ignoring her while obviously giving some other less-deserving being my attention?) it maddens her to the degree that she'll bite my ankles, lol. I think many cats are not fond of any music other than singing, possible because their range of hearing is so much greater than a human's. Not only is their frequency range larger, their hearing is about 12x more sensitive than ours. They just hear sooooo much that we can't perceive. And music may seem chaotic to them, as well. In the case of your kitty, it may be something akin to the jealousy mine shows when I speak on the phone. You're giving your undivided attention to something, while totally ignoring the kitty. Oh, and by the way, the only other cat I've had that "liked" music would only listen to certain singers. His favorite was Nat King Cole's Christmas album....but he HATED almost all female singers except for Anne Murray, lol. He could take or leave most any instrumental music, from jazz to classical. It was only human voices he had an opinion of! John

I don't have one, but do wish I had something about that height. It would make shaving in the shower so much easier.

It was a blessing to my sister when she had to cool the fever of the baby she could not bear to let go of, and more regularly to my father in his last years of life. And if you''ve ever been bone tired and dirty at the same time... well, you'll use it. I like the teak bench as opposed to the built-in tiled one. It's removable if you change your mind, replaceable if you wear it out, and looks pretty in juxtaposition to almost any tile

I've seen wall-mounted benches that will fold up when not in use. These are easily retrofitted, so you can defer the decision to a later time if you decide it's something you'd like. I might add some extra blocking to the framing while the walls are open to make this process easier later.

If you want a leg-shaving ledge, it doesn't need to be big. Just a 4" lip would be more than enough. Williamsem's points are good ones, too.

I had a bench put in during our bathroom renovation a year ago. I use it when shaving my legs. Since we don't have a tub in the house, I wanted to be able to sit if injured or to make it easier to wash a small child or dog (not that we have either, but you never know). Also put in a handheld shower for the same reason. I have sat on the bench, and it is cold. If you plan to actually sit on the bench, I'd consider something with a wood slatted seat.
