Keep original tub or replace during remodel?
Comments (6)I faced a similar issue with a bathroom on the main floor of our 1962 split-level, which is used by my two young girls. Our original plans to just retile the floor are leading to a total bath redo, in large part because of the somewhat aged but still functional 5-ft cast iron bathtub. Seemed penny-wise but pound-foolish to put money into expensive tile, but leave the tub. I looked at refinishing/reglazing the tub, but I wasn't convinced that the end result would last for years, especially with kids using the tub every day. I hate acrylic tubs, which was the good and bad of it. The good is - there aren't that many choices of simple cast iron tubs. And the bad is - there aren't many choices of cast iron tubs. Kohler's lowest-cost tub, the Villager, looks too shallow and skimpy-looking for our taste. But it is economical; in our area, Home Depot offers it for sale. Kohler has 4 or 5 other models, but they start around $900. I ended up ordering the Toto 1525 tub, which was recommended by several folks posting here. It's the closest thing I cound find to the original solid cast iron tubs used in houses like yours and mine....See MoreSeen Your Kitchen, What's the Rest of Your House Look Like? Part2
Comments (137)House I designed and planted all the plants and shrubs myself. Of course I needed a big truck and manpower for the two trees. My old rescue girl. Back yard and the "BOSS" Foyer to game room Area Front porch, steps and walk way diy bricking is done, the cement area below is now a bricked step. Next the back porch and patio. The picture you have seen a thousand times. Living room you have seen a thousand times. Miles of nature preserve for walking, biking or horses just around the corner. A mile down this path leds to a state park with some great kayaking and canoeing. 12 minutes to the beach And, since I'm shameless...this 4/3 house on 1 1/4 acre is in P.B. County and will be up for sale in a year or so. I best get a better camera and let someone else take the pictures lol....See MoreAdvice on how to keep kitchen in style with the rest of the home?
Comments (46)As a fellow bland ranch owner, I can share what we are doing/have done. We chose to shoot for a modest vintage/modern cottage look. We are using older style simple lines and trying to make it look cozy and welcoming. MCM is a cool vibe but would not have worked with our antique furniture as well, so we went earlier modern into a 30s-40s vibe. We are using a lot of chrome to look just a little glam/twinkly, but went with slab front cabs (white Ikea Applad) and simple moldings to keep it smooth looking. Our chrome accented light fixtures add the bling and so we tried hard to keep everything else simple. Our house will never be huge so we decided to make it look modest, despite having good sized rooms and an open plan (we added on and opened up). We added an eyebrow window to the front as a hint of the look inside. It gave charm to an otherwise plain/boring exterior. It also added some great light inside and made a great feature in the ceiling. I hope to get to landscaping more after I finish the inside and will try to have that work with an older, simple vibe too. Because our house was so bland and no one had given it direction, we were able to put our own stamp on it and it fits together well. If we had a mid-century traditional colonial look cape or colonial style house, it would have been near impossible to use the look we did and have it fit. We may have worked it into a split, but that may have been a stretch. Our house will look like someone who has older stuff and who moved into a modern 30s-40s house and has picked up some more up to date, for that time, stuff. Our living room & dining room will have the older pieces. We are getting more modern furniture for the den. I am not a huge fan of having a house look like it was built and all the furnishings were purchased in the same week. You don't have to pick a moment in time and make everything from that time match. That would not show evolution. You kitchen can look older or younger than the rest of the house, but it should fit the basic aesthetic....See MoreWill the rest of my house ever be the same - how to clean tile?
Comments (7)Ah, the joys of the tile haze. We just dealt with that very same issue in our back hallway. We grouted and then sponged, but didn't do a great job sponging...which is KEY. So the haze was pretty thick and really white. We ended up buying a tile cleaner at a local tile place and SCRUBBING to get it off. We had a rough edge to the tile, so it was pretty hard getting in all the cracks. But it looks much, much better now! I wouldn't pressure wash it, since you probably haven't sealed the grout and it could (maybe?) mess it up. For the rust...you might try Bar Keepers Friend, just a little bit. I used it on some super tough spots and it worked. I used just a LITTLE, since I didn't want to scratch it. It looks great now, so I'm sure yours will look wonderful soon enough! Good luck!...See More- 13 years ago
