Do you grow anything that you use for holiday decorating?
Comments (14)nckville, those are lovely (including the vase!). And token, if I had a sunny enough living room to support a ficus, I would use it as a Christmas tree too. I'm not sure who decided it was a good idea to bring a huge tree into a house. I've always lived in small houses, and it's always a struggle to find a place for one. For the cuttings, do you stick to something that needs to be trimmed anyway, or do you find it's unnoticeable if you snip a branch here and there to get as much as you need? I don't want to ruin my evergreens!...See MoreWhat to do if you receive decor item you don't care fo
Comments (44)This thread is hysterical and so timely now that the holidays will soon be upon us. Fortunately I haven't received too many hideous gifts...at least not from friends or relatives who live near me. My aunt across country will never know I never used the afghan she made me for my wedding 25 years ago. However I'm too sentimental to give it away because I know how much work went into it so it sits in a box in the back of my linen closet. My husband can't understand why I keep it and once jokingly said "Some day we'll be old enough for it" Ouch. Really depends on what it is, some things end up like the afghan, others go to an out of the way shelf or cabinet for a short time. Some will get returned especially if they came with a gift receipt. If it's from someone like my sister we're OK with saying hate it take it back. And I'm OK with straight to the Goodwill. Never burned or displayed any gift when the giver came to visit. Every year a few girlfriends and I take turns hosting a holiday lunch. We do a small secret Santa gift exchange and the last few years we added a "pink elephant" gag gift exchange. A strange, funny or hideous item that can be new, old regifted, you name it. Usually wrapped beautifully on the outside and a horror on the inside. You get the change to steal before opening and after and it's become a hightlight of our gathering. Usually I choose by the wrap and walk away with a beautiful gift bag or box I'll definitly use again, but sometime it's true that one person's trash is another's treasure because I can't believe some of the crap the girls have coveted!...See MoreDo you decorate your tree more for looks/decor or sentiment?
Comments (41)Gayle, that has to be the most bizarre Christmas story ever! What a movie it would make, lol. Purely sentimental here! We never had kids, but that didn't stop us from having a young-at-heart tree. The fresh tree has always had an eclectic mix of handmade and store bought ornaments ... crocheted snowflakes and angels, stuffed Kliban cats, Spanish moss wreaths that dh made almost 30 years ago (still use 'em), terra cotta, metal, resin, straw, wood, brass, etc. Some ornaments have been retired, but I can't bring myself to toss 'em. I keep them in a separate storage bin along with the photo cards from years past. Never owned a ball ornament until last year when I bought a dozen mercury glass balls from Restoration Hardware. They're beautiful, but very heavy. This year I added glass icicles. Wish I had a couple dozen more of those in the shorter lengths. In years past I've strung popcorn and cranberries for garland. Switched to freshly harvested Spanish moss for a few years. Didn't have any garland the past couple years. This year added some beechwood cranberry garland. I love colored lights on the tree. Tried white lights for a couple years, but switched back. The 4' artificial tree in the dining room is pre-strung with white lights. I guess that tree has a nature theme with a lot of birds, fish, acorns, a few bears and a moose. After Christmas I glitz it up with Mardi Gras lights and beads until Fat Tuesday....See MoreBookcase Barn Door : What Would You Do?
Comments (12)I would not do a barn door on that. I don't think the styles would look right together. I'm not even sure you have enough room on the top to attach the necessary hanging hardware. Instead, I'd see if it's possible to have doors made that cover the bottom 2 shelves on both sides. Putting more decorative stuff on top and hiding games behind the doors. Seems more suited to the style of cabinet....See Morejoanie_b
