Previously received feedback and have modified plan.

New plan after getting feedback on last one:

Major kitchen related changes from last plan:

Added foot of depth to kitchen

Moved refrigerator and oven. Moved island 10" closer to family room

Enlarged pantry

Added foot of width to family room (since moved island closer to family room)

Family of 4 with 2 teenagers who won't be here long. We don't entertain except occasional family holidays. Island is counter height bar. Cooktop is induction. Ovens will be advantium and an oven. We will have a microwave also in the deep shelf in the pantry.

Any comments? (right now I think I'm happy with the kitchen).

The thing that jumps out at me is the phrase "Family of 4 with 2 teenagers who won't be here long." With all the boomeranging going on these days, I am not sure I'd count on that long term...
Otherwise, I might move the island 6" further towards the family room, but that is not a necessity.

Hi Katsmeow! I think the kitchen in this plan looks great. I think the chair next to the piano should go near the windows instead, to keep your walkway open, but that has nothing to do with the kitchen...:-)

Hi Kats! I like the changes you've made. I agree that you'd be happier with the master shower a bit larger, especially if it's doorless. We're living with a small doorless shower right now in a rental while we build, and the splashing out is considerable, even though it's sunken by 3". I also agree that if at all possible, find a way to put a door across the hallway. I remember you saying that you entertain a lot, and if your mom moves in, I'd think you want noise control. I got the impression you were planning Bedroom 4 to be her room, but if Bath 2 is the handicap accessible one, odds are that she'll be in one of the bedrooms near it or be very inconvenienced. I also agree that you should move the bar 6" toward the dining room. You definitely don't want your fridge doors impeding your walkway. Like Chicagoans mentioned, this will put your sink directly across from your cooktop. I personally prefer them to be slightly offset, but I remember several people on the kitchen forum suggesting that you line them up. Clearly, it must be a matter of personal preference. :-) I like Bevangel's idea of positioning the posts carefully. You COULD shrink your study a bit, but I like it large because it facilitates a sitting area if you want a peaceful spot (especially if your mom moves in), and like you said, you'd like a place for exercise equipment. I'd keep it the size it is, personally. It looks like you're moving along and really taking time to get it right. Good luck!

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback, mahlgold and bmorepanic...I am intrigued with your suggestion for the angles, bmorepanic. My doubt has to do with the distance from the prep sink to the ovens, particularly as one oven is the Gagg steam oven which I expect to be using regularly and it feels like quite a shlep from the prep sink to the steam oven. I wonder if I could fit them into the angled part of the cabinet to the left of the oven? The angles certainly help with the feel of that end of the kitchen. And I can also see how it helps to balance it with angles at both ends but I'm not too certain about having my "landing spot" right in front of one of the eatings spots...guess it would just mean I'd have to clean up earlier...the dishwasher and clean-up sink are where I've had them these many years and while taking a little adjustment initially, I've gotten use to having it on the left and think I'd rather have it there than in the china hutch which is going to be pretty full, I think. Mahlgold, I have gone back and forth in my own mind with your suggestion about the pantry (it's actually one of the main reasons I had such a hard time reconfiguring from the first pass) and finally decided that a 2 foot wide pantry was just too narrow for my purposes...however, I hadn't really thought about dividing up the goods. I'm going to think about that today while working in the kitchen and see if I could do that because I agree with you that it would be nice to have uppers and lowers all along that one side. You've also made a good point about the cooktop that I'll have to look up today. I do have 2 feet (actually 25inches) and there is room to make it deeper (the other side is actually planned to be 30 inch cabs) but I do need to look up the requirements for the Thermador Pro cooktop I'm planning to get. I think I'd rather make the counter deeper to accommodate that than to move it to where the sink is as I don't really like the idea of the cooktop being right in front of where people are sitting/eating. I really appreciate the ideas...it is SO helpful for me to make sure I've really thought things through. Then when I finally sit down with the GC and KD and DH, I'll have my thoughts all in order!

just an update - I realized that if I went with the miele integrated fridges I could get more room for my coat closet/cleaning supplies closet. So now instead of the subzero 27" columns I think I'm going to get the 18" freezer 30" fridge miele combo. The freezer has 8 cu ft. which whhile nothing compared to the 16 cu ft of the subzero will be ample freezer storage for us. this gets me 6 more inches! whohooo!!! The fabricator finally called the stone yard and put a hold on my calacatta gold and I'm hoping to get pictures of the slabs soon so I can figure out how many I'll need (I want as much swaths of white without too much veining as possible) and I got the finishes from henrybuilt. very pretty quartersewn walnut....

BTW, in my current layout, the fridge is right behind cooktop, and people using the fridge interfere with cooking. Obviously that doesn't work either. The ideal layout is to easily go from fridge/pantry > sink > prep space > cooktop. Additionally I can see why you put the fridge more out of the way as you definitely don't want it interfering with you when cooking. However a larger kitchen doesn't always make for a more efficient kitchen. Guests walking through kitchen to dining is not ideal, but the trade-off is dining in the solarium with 180 degree wooded view through a glazed area 3 times the window in the old dining room. Ok and how often does one look up and gaze outdoors as one is eating one's meal? Especially at night? Personally, I'd rather have views like that when I'm cooking since we spend a heck of a lot more time in the kitchen than in a dining area. Putting kitchen hen at the end of the house is a common layout, but I haven’t been able to work out a viable plan due to lack of wall space for storage, even if we sacrifice the fireplace. How tall on the end are those windows? Can I see a picture of what it looks like now? How far across do those windows go?

I like the kitchen!

This is OT and perhaps you've thought of this already (I didn't see your previous thread) but I was wondering if you couldn't do a bit more with the breakfast nook. Since you've chosen not to have a formal dining room, could you enhance the breakfast nook to do double duty for special occasions/entertaining? This wouldn't necessarily involve adding square footage, but instead use the architectural details and furniture to add a touch of drama/formality to the space. For example -- if the house design allows -- you could:

1) install a bay window in the breakfast area in place of the windows

2) replace the single door from the BA to the covered patio with french doors

3) Add a skylight above the dining table

4) Use an oblong dining table that can expand towards the kitchen for entertaining

5) Add built-ins (open shelves or cabinetry) in the BA wall (opposite the patio) which would provide a place to showcase decorative items and could be used as a server

6) Installing a "transitional" chandelier over the table that will work equally well for breakfast and more formal dining.

7) Installing good insulated doors (or solid doors) between the BA and drop zone and the drop zone and utility room to minimize noise from laundry etc...

We had a very similar layout in a previous home and considered all of the above in order to have more dining versatility. Unfortunately, the home's design didn't allow us to do much.

The only issue I see is that your dishwasher is in your prep zone which makes it tough for one person to prep while another cleans up, empties, or loads the DW. If you move your DW to the other side of the sink then you decrease your prep space and need to be sure the DW and fridge don't open into each other. My parents' last house had the DW opposite the fridge you couldn't have both open at the same time which made dinner clean up a daily challenge. One person would be doing dishes and loading the DW while another would be trying to put condiments and left overs into the fridge and they were always in each other's way. If you put your DW to the left side of the sink and out of the way of the fridge, then not only is your prep space smaller, but you're back to back with the cooktop. This might be a case of choosing the lesser not ideal situation.

McMesprit -- I like some of those ideas, particularly the idea of the wall of built ins.
