Look at the dog crate cover I made...

I had been looking for a stylish crate cover for my new puppy. I found some that I liked, but they were quite expensive. I purchased a baby curtain at target and winged it. Not quite as nice as the one I wanted, but it will do. Does anyone have ideas on how to dress it up a bit more. I will be picking Piper up on Christmas Eve. She is so adorable she melts my heart. =)

OMG!! How darling is that. Piper is a cutie, too. The only thing I would add is a big "P" applique.

Hey...I like it! Good job. Sorry I don't have any ideas how you can dress it up more, but I just wanted to let you know it looks really nice. What I like it that you can make it out of fabric that compliments the room you will have it in.

Totally dependent on the dog. I had never used crates until our current two dogs. It was necessary for both, but in totally different ways. The big dog needed to have extreme aggression dealt with and using an open crate was part of that training. Once the aggression was modified, there was no reason for the crate. The small dog needed the security at first. I put the crate by my side of the bed and made a cave by covering the top. Once she was house broken, and her confidence boosted, the crate is left open so she can use it as she pleases. However, if the small dog is not exercised fairly regularly, she can get a bit destructive---tissue boxes are her favorite. She will get into the living room trash during those times---but not the kitchen trash. Dogs are often destructive because they are bored. The more energetic the dog, the more easily it can get bored. Crating can be a good part of a dogs life if it keeps the dog from being destructive. But it is a very bad idea to take the place of exercise. Crating in a car is much better than allowing an energetic, hyper, or scared dog loose and create distractions for the driver.

Wow! Who would have thought there'd be so many companies making these disguises for crates? Based on what I can tell, I'm partial to the ones from Crate Haven. For me, it's desirable to be able to slip a standard metal crate inside, thus averting possible cleaning or chewing issues. Of course, the real issue is where to put these things. Our dogs are medium/large, so these are not small crates I'm dealing with. I'd prefer to have them back in the kitchen/service area and not in the living room. Pretty stupid of me to get this far into the design process without considering this. So those of you that are still planning: Take note! I've emailed our architect and we're going to see if we can reconfigure the mudroom to accomodate the crates. We'll compare the cost of having the cabinet maker build in something to what crates from Crate Haven will cost - sort of a hybrid solution, maybe, combining Allison0704's concept with the Crate Haven concept. It means I'll lose some storage cabinets, but c'est la vie. I'll let you know how it turns out (many months down the road).....Thanks, everyone.

Oh I love Weimaraners! My first memory of a dog is our Weim Misty knocking me over (and over and over!) wanting to play when I was a toddler. Zeke is a handsome boy! You can have a door cut and rehung into a dutch door so that the top and bottom each have 2 hinges, then just don't hang the bottom. You can alway hang it if you want to pretty things up for a party or something. It would probably even store flat on top of the crate when you don't need it. Kind of an extreme solution but it's your house and if that would make things more pleasing for you, I say go for it. When it comes time to sell, replacing that door is not a big expense an you just do it before listing. oh - another thought!!! Take the door off all together and hang a portiere curtain instead. It's generally a dressier look but with a casual fabric it might work for your room Here is a link that might be useful:

We have used crates since Molly and Bailey were tiny pups. Originally, both were left in their crates when we left b/c otherwise they'd chew everything. Molly has not been put into a crate when we leave the house since she was 3 or 4, but B. gets separation anxiety if he's not crated when we leave so we have one for him. We say "crate time" and he smiles and runs to his crate. He loves his crate and he gets very upset when it moves out of the house (we used to take house crates into the car w/ us when we drove to FL with the dogs, but don't do that any more since we have built-in crates in both houses now). Having the crates is very helpful when we drive to Florida b/c I would not feel safe with them in the car for a 15 hour drive if they weren't crated (I will not put them in cargo on an airplane- no way, no how, so we have to drive from PA to FL each year) They also eat in the crates (raw fed). In PA, I also wanted a crate in the sunroom for Bailey b/c he gets left alone a little more here and I wanted him to have more sunshine than he does in his eating crate (plus Molly can sit on the daybed in the sunroom next to him if she chooses.) The only problem we have is Molly loves the sunroom crate and sometimes we need to leave and want to put Bailey in it and we cannot get her out of it! It is a wire crate, but a fancy one that matches the room. Before we got this, I just had wire crates in the middle of the sunroom, which was not a tenable solution.

Thanks kitchenkelly, that is a great idea. It needs something, it looks a little plain even after adding the grosgrain ribbon! If I go with the monogram or applique, would you use a chocolate color.

It will actually be in the family room, I will not match as well in there but I just had to go with some form of pink for her. You could make this with a curtain to match any decor. I will never make another it took me most of the day.

I was thinking the cream/white color. I think Piper prefers a more understated elegance. Maybe not?

It's adorable and you did such a nice job, but that little Piper makes my heart go pitter-patter. She is a complete doll!

Well I live in Southeast Missouri, our yorkie Good Golly Miss "Molly" passed away about 4 months ago. She was extremely tiny 2.8lbs. She was 4 years old and it has been extremely hard on our family. After grieving a bit we called the family we purchased Molly from and it just so happened that she had kept Molly's sister and she was the one pregnant. She had 2 baby girls and we took the bigger of the 2 she is 7 weeks and 2lbs. she will probably be between 5-6lbs full grown. There is one baby girl left and she is adorable. My 11 year old daughter has no idea about Piper. I am picking her up Christmas Eve. We are going to tell my daughter we left a bag in the car and ask her to go get it and there she will be. I am so excited about Piper, and that the bloodline will be so close to our Molly.
*to the person that commented on the zipper, the cover does not have any zippers in the front, the flap just lays down nicely. There are gaps on each side of the flap, I just tried to close them a bit for the pictures.

Only 4, that's so sad. Piper's just beautiful and you did a great job on the crate cover. It's perfect as it is.

You are really talented! It looks great!

I know that if I had the bright idea to do this (I really should--I have a very large metal crate for my tiny terrier, and although the top makes a good place to toss clothes, it's not at all attractive!), I would be on this board and others with a hundred questions about measuring and lining and the corners and this and that!

Now, I know you wrote that you'd never do this again, but maybe you should reconsider. Have you been over to the Etsy website? Very creative folks, like you, over there!

Freckles, beautiful job!! Another vote here for monogramming---it's adorable! And I love the name Piper! Enjoy your new puppy---what a lucky girl to get to find a puppy in a bag! Fun!

Thanks eandhl, Merry Christmas to you and yours also. If I could take both of the puppies I would. They are both so adorable and then they would not be upset leaving thier family. I named her after the actress Piper Parebo in the movie Coyote Ugly. But (if) I was getting both, I think it would be hillarious to name the 2nd one Palin. Piper Palin, is Sarah Palin's daughters name for those of you that don't already know. LOL
