Beadboard Ceiling, Yeah or Nay? DH thinks too much?

I already have a hard enough time deciding on things, and when DH attempts to veto things, it makes my head spin!

I have an old 1937 kitchen, which will have white painted, inset cabinets, shaw farm sink & soapstone counters. I love the pictures of the beadboard ceilings, and may even want beadboard backsplash, but DH is saying he thinks it is overkill..?

The dining room that adjoins the room painted is cypress tong and groove.

So, yes or no to beadboard ceiling. If I do the ceiling should I skip the beadboard backsplash, or should I do the backsplash and skip the ceiling? Need to decide ASAP!

I love the beadboard cellings, but I do know that they are fairly prone to cracking. I think most people have to re-paint them a couple of times because of the cracks.

I also like the backspash, although I don't know how well it holds up to areas that get water. It is probably fine if it is painted well.

I would do one or the other. I agree that both may be overkill, and I really like it beter when people mix surfaces.

It would be a lot with the backsplash and the paneling you already have.

You might look at something different, but traditional like anaglypta.

Yes, I know they are from Young's, I said so eighth post down. My original query had simply been for more pictures using that style cabinet, they were/are very few and far between. Crown Point... *chuckle-sigh* Crown Point is really beautiful, have seen their work on a couple of gawk-at-rich-people's-houses-for-charity ;-) tours and at several home expos - since they're local they've always trucked in a kitchen for the larger expos. But, "overimprovement" wouldn't begin to describe it, both for the house and for the neighborhood. Not to mention that we'd have to win the lottery! (Frankly if we won the lottery I think I'd rather move. I hate this neighborhood - it's what's euphemistically referred to as "transitional" and we thought it was improving when we bought the house but it's going even further downhill instead - and the house isn't too far behind.) Kitchen redo is not in the picture at this point due to lack of funding - I am stuck with my disintegrating particleboard cabinets for a while longer, probably a few years. I don't know where PO found this stuff but it makes that flat-pack stuff from Home Depot (used to be Mills Pride, I think they call it "Distinction" now) look like it belongs in the White House.

oceanna, thanks for those words of encouragement. As you know, as others who frequent this board know, I've been messing around with different colors, etc. for over a year. Taking my time, still not making any concrete decisions on paint. Then wham, today I learn I need to have my colors chosen within the next 7 or so days!! This happened so quickly because we decided to contract out the floating and painting since it's so much work. My poor DH is just about to drop. This will free him up for the more detailed things like moldings and other things. I have picked out my master bedroom color. It is a SW color called Misty. I had BM mix it up and it was right on. I couldn't find the touch of the mix on the SW sample. So I guess that's as good a match as one can get. LOL It's a silver blue and one I couldn't find in any BM blue. The master bath is Gray Cashmere, a gray green that is the same hue as the blue. My most difficult decision of course is finding that right cream for the great room/kitchen. I think I may have found it in Rich Cream by BM, but not certain. Still have a zillion more colors I want to sample. I wish I wasn't such a fanatic when it comes to wall color. I'm making myself crazy. When this is over I'll be so very happy!!! Then it will be all downhill as far as I'm concerned. I think picking the wall colors is by far the most stressful. With all the samples of paint I'm not using in the new house, all I can say is this house I'm living in now will have some very unique wall colors when it's up for sale. HA! The samples are all in the same color family and the same type of paint so I think I'll be able to put a lot of it to good use. Those $10 quarts at BM add up in a hurry, let me tell you!! I'm trying to be frugal, but my desire for that perfect cream keeps me going back again and again. LOL

pine and cedar t&g beadboard ... paint or stain?

The pine will bleed when it is painted unless you use a good primer that will seal. I used Zinsser 123 on the inside of a cabinet and I could still see the grain and knots. I then coved those areas with Zinsser BIN. I have 2 rooms with tongue and groove on the ceilings. The living room is vaulted and has beams also. I did the work on the boards. I sanded them, put on a clear coat of poly, let dry, lightly sand and another clear coat of poly. I choose oil poly because it will natually become darker, and they look very nice! Latex poly will not become darker. I like the depth of the look so much that I decided to put it on my dining room ceiling, instead of replacing the sheetrock. My carpenter delivered 36 16 ft boards for me to finish and then he put them up. It was worth all the extra work!

At good lumber yards there may be more variety in sizing available. We were able to get this beadboard in slightly knotty pine to match existing pine beadboard and pine shiplap wainscoting in our old cape. I love the warmth of beadboard. I think it is quieter than drywall. If you go with painted beadboard, my suggestion is to paint the tongue edge of every board before installing, and allow it to dry thoroughly. It will minimize any humidity-related shrinking/expansion of the beadboard to show as a crack.

Too much, especially with the existing paneling. Also jarring with the style of your house--a Victorian detail with simple 1937 window trim.

Tinker, I vote for the beadboard backsplash in painted wood or even tile. I have seen a tile beadboard that was very pretty. I think if you had rooms in the house with beadboard ceilings you could go for it - otherwise I would replicate what is there. It might be overkill to have both the ceiling and the backsplash in beadboard.

Can't wait to see your finished kitchen!! Very exciting!

There's also paintable beadboard wallpaper if you want something that would make it easier to change out later on. It looks very nice on a backsplash.

I think beadboard would be better on a higher ceiling or one with more visual interest.

As for beadboard backsplashes, im a big fan. I think tile can be a little cold, and/or overwrought. I like my kitchens simple, though.

mtnrdredux, I remember seeing your old kitchen.. which I LOVE!!!!! What color were the cabinets, and what color were the subway tiles? I love the mix of your beadboard... love the whole kitchen!

Thanks, Tinker! I think i remember your kitchen too, and the cherry green and white wallpaper --- you bought this home recently, yes? A lot of us thought the kitchen looked pretty nice, but i think you said the cabinets were in sorry shape.

As for colors, I did my kitchen about 9 years ago now, so I have no idea. The cabinets were Rutt, and it was one of their colors. I basically walked into a showroom and said "i want those cabinets". That was when I was a normal productive human being instead of TKO.

The color was pretty buttery though, almost crossing the line from cream to yellow. Reminds me of FnB off white (misleading name)

How about a tin ceiling? Those are pretty, retro looking and won't be too much wood.... could make you both happy ;)

We are hoping to do most of our kitchen remodel DIY style, so I considered beadboard ceiling. I'm now thinking about doing Armstrong ceiling planks. Lowes carry them. They look nice in the video and seems easy to install. But I have not seen a real application anywhere.
