Ugh - major bummer happened today...

Our kitchen is/was almost complete, just waiting for cabinet hardware and up counter. Then, today, on my way to the doctor, I got a call from the sitter - upstairs toilet is overflowing and can't get it stopped... came home to water going through three of our new kitchen lights, water all over the place. The contractor just stopped by and cut a hole in ceiling, yes it is soaked... you can see a little bit of water where some of the drywall edges are. They are coming tomorrow to remove our beautiful ceiling and let it dry out.

Not the end of the world I guess - insurance company has been contacted -- but I/we are just kind of sick about it.

Sorry, just had to vent.

But you also get a "free" design do-over on your ceiling color, can placement and design, etc., after seeing every thing place. Now's your chance to re-evaluate if you care to do so.

Hope that cheers you up. Be glad the water wasn't from a Hurricane-flood. Almost nobody has insurance cover for that, alas.

OMG - that is awful! I am so glad it was caught quickly or it could have ruined everything.... This will be a funny anecdote someday, but it will take a while. Good thing you had a contractor nearby to help. It will be sorted out and your work will continue....

Dentists here too - I have to be sedated or have an all-out panic attack (the screaming, barfing, peeing-yourself kind). Good thing about that, though, is that I can have 4 hours of dental work done in one sitting rather than having to go to multiple appointments. My dentist is a double-doc, he's also an MD in anesthesiology. Sadly, he's also hideously expensive, so I don't keep up as well with my dental work as I ought (medical insurance won't cover the anesthesia - which is the pricey part - since it's for dental work, and DH's employer's dental plan is a pathetic joke). Heights... I still have cold sweats remembering driving through the mountains in PA and the high, high, HIGH bridges I had to cross. Really peeved other drivers because I could only go about 35mph with my flashers on. I had this terror that if I went any faster I would go over the guard rail. Oh, and did I mention that it was windy, and that I was driving a Suzuki Samurai with a u-drag-it trailer - NOT what one would call a stable vehicle! Odd one - vomit. Seeing (even on TV or movie - when did it become so acceptable to show this in detail? they wouldn't show someone having a bowel movement...) or hearing someone throw up, or smelling vomit, is enough to send me right over the edge. Add me to the list of claustrophobes, too. I had my first head MRI back before open or partially-open MRIs were common, and I screamed nonstop through clamped-shut jaws during the whole 45 minutes. (Being, shall we say, horizontally gifted, I was in physical contact with nearly the whole tube, and then they put this cage thing over your face... *shudder*) They gave me ONE puny little Xanax. DH was on the microphone repeating "if you touch that button or move an inch, you're going to have to start over from the beginning" in a very stern voice. Now pretty much all the MRI machines around here are open or semi-open and it's a piece of cake.

Thanks everyone. I'm already really good at pinching pennies and am already doing so to stick to the budget. I'm having a final meeting with our cabinet guy on Friday to make some choices. The estimate he gave us has an $1,800 range depending on the choices I make. I'm sure I can cut some there. Also my full wall pantry is quoted as quartersawn instead of plain oak which is a mistake so that will help a little too. We haven't had an estimate done for the floors but had guessed $2000 for refinishing. We want to do the entire first floor all at once, so it will just have to wait. So I think we'll be able to swing it and still do it all right. IT just stinks to have to wait on the floors. I've been waiting on them for 5 years!! skyedog - good to know. I'll have my husband call his sister (our insurance rep) and get the scoop ironcook - I did see those, I've actually had my eye on them. I'm still considering the wood anyway, even if I can budget paperstone. We'll see! johnliu - Our plumbing is new, thank goodness! We had everything re-plumbed when we remodeled our bathroom 3 years ago. I have a plumber uncle who owed my dad some favors! Whew!! I wish I had an electrician uncle...

Cindy, That sucks! Sorry to hear it, but I think it was a good thing to tell the saleswoman about the $50 and to tell her she could do as she wished with the info. That was probably really good Karma for you- lets the niggly sick feeling escape! I had a sort of similar experience (not kitchen related). I was sitting outside at a StarBucks with DH and left my purse on the ground- we changed tables to get in/out of the sun, and started talking to one of my DD's friends who walked by. She then started talking to this young 20ish something guy who was now sitting at our old table, and anyhow, suddenly I realized my purse was missing- we looked everywhere, I went into Starbucks, told the clerks, we walked around forever, (it was a huge shopping mall), and then went back to Starbucks to give our info- my car keys were in there, all my ID, you know the drill, I was sick... Figured that that '20 something' guy must have taken it and stuffed it into his backpack. But, it had been turned in to Starbucks. I still think to this day, that he saw us talking to "Morgan", and felt guilty and returned it while we were gone searching the parking lot. Maybe, if this saleswoman talks to the granite guys, someone will feel guilty enough that you will get your money back- fingers crossed!

Found this post in another thread, maybe the strain I dealt with was different from Diane's: henry_kuska 6 years ago There is no such thing as a virus named RMV. RMV is the group name for a number of viruses that infect roses. Even for a single virus in that group there are different strains that have different virilities. Also, the rose imune system has been shown to be more efective at fighting PNRSV (usually considered the most common rose virus in the U.S.) at higher temperatures than at lower temperatures. Thus, someone in a warmer climate may feel that a certain virus infection is not a big deal, but that experience probably will not apply to the same variety of rose with the same virus (and same strain) infection grown in a cooler climate. Also, since we are normally dealing with hybrids, the immune system can vary from rose variety to rose variety. When you add that it may be a different virus, a simultaneous infection with two or more types of virus, and/or an infection with a different strain of an individual virus; you see that it is risky to make general statements about what an untested rose virus infection will mean to someone else.

Oh, you poor thing! Now THAT is frustrating. I can sympathize, as we were looking at that, but got lucky. Our toilet decided to start leaking on the very day the drywaller was there to do the mudding/taping. She took down a few panels from the ceiling, let it dry out, and I fixed the toilet. Major problem averted, but I counted my blessings it didn't happen after the kitchen was finished. Big HUG to you.

I'm sorry it happened. Water damage is a huge PITA. But I'm so glad someone was home to let you know about the water! It would have been even worse if it went on for hours with no one home.

Thanks all for the positive thoughts... I am putting it in perspective, agree it could have been much worse! (I was on my way to my second MRI in a week, so that was even more stressful ;-)... )

The ceiling will dry, all will be repaired -- hope the MRIs show nothing troubling or that can't also be easily fixed.

Might want to show the kiddos and the babysitter how to shut off the water at the wall or where the main water shutoff is.

Side note: Angie_DIY, you hired a female drywaller? Does she work *alone*?? No matter, she's my new construction hero : ) If you are near Portland, OR, I'm going to hire her too!

Flyleft: Yes, I found a female drywaller on Angie's List (naturally!). However, she did not do the 'rock herself. After she delivered the sheetrock in the morning, two young men came and put up the 'rock in about 2.5 hours. She later did the taping/mudding/texturing over the next several days. Not that she can't hang 'rock herself, as she clearly can, but that isn't the best use of her talents.

I am near Portland (temporarily), but, unfortunately, that isn't where my house or my drywaller is ;-)

I am so sorry for your luck! True its not the end of the world, but its frusterating all the same! And once its all done you can congratulate yourself for taking it all in stride and not blowing everything way out of proportion.

So sorry this happened to you. Very sad that it's post install. It made me stop and think about how I've never taught my old-enough to know kids how to stop toilet water from flowing -- going to have a little demonstration tonight so that this doesn't happen on their watch here or anywhere else they might go. Again, very sorry it happened to you.

It will all work out. See whats salvageable and whats not. Atleast you hadn't just readjusted to a new kitchen completed. If It makes you feel better, the washer "drained" into our upstairs hallway this weekend. 2nd day in the house...wood floors cupping for now. Hopefully they will lay flat again. Oh well....life happens and the overflow was my fault which means I have such feelings of guilt.

Bottom line- It could be worse and it will all get better.
