Can you take a picture of the area and post it?

i always prefer the look of backsplashes that run to the end of the wall and down to floor. looks much more finished, imo.

twinsmom22, I had the exact same problem. We solved it by using a single size wall switch with 2 small toggle switches.

I took a picture of the counter area. The switch box is halfway past the end of the granite counter. Any ideas?

why wouldn't you run it to the corner and down to the floor? i'm not sure what the downside of that would be.

Yup twinsmom, this is my exact dilema, I didn't want to run my tile down to the floor, because it's only a 3 inch space. From your pic it looks like changing the switch like I suggested would solve the problem, and the tile would be finished more like the pic that Bill V provided.

You could change the location of the switch, but in this case, I think Ed's right. Both natural stopping points (the end of the cabinets and the end of the countertop) are breached by the switches. The next point is the doorway. I normally don't care for doing that because it then looks like the tile should go UP, as well, and before you know it, the question is where do you stop!!

Here's a photo of how my tile installer handled a similar problem in my kitchen. I didn't have as much wall space down to the floor so he ended it flush with the tile.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I thought about just extending the backsplash out past the counter a few inches. I used graph paper to map out what it would look like. I'm using tumbled stone. What do you think of this idea?

We have that exact same delima and wall size next to the cabinet, I read that you don't want to bring it to the wall, but under the circumstances, it looks like the better option. I love the example you did above but to be honest, it looks unfinished to me. What stone color are you going with?

I think that just accents the problem, rather than solving it. But that's personal opinion. The same would be true if you were to stop the tile just short of the switchplate.

I agree with Bill, but I think that of the two, stopping short of the switchplate would look better.

Twinsmom, in all likelihood your switch box is mounted to a stud on one side or another, probably its right. How about opening the drywall and moving the box to the next stud over--either over the counter or by the door framing, depending on what works? As long as there's not something else filling the potential positions, it's an easy job for a handyman, done in an hour or two and ready for tiling and a little sanding and repainting.

You drawing is very good, but I have to agree, unless you go all the way across to the end of the wall and down, the ending will be abrupt. Did you check into the switch I suggested? It will only take up the amount of room as one switch, and based on your pic if you use the dual switch I suggested it should end right and the end of the counter. Thanks to all for all your suggestions. I wish I could move the switch box, but as mentioned before, it is sandwiched between studs. There is no room for a double box to the left of the stud, and on the right side of the stud are water pipes (we already opened up the wall to look). I might use the switch that was suggested, it might line up with the backsplash end and is worth a try. I'll post pictures when it's done. Thanks again!
