Painted mantels colors other than white??

I have the typical white painted mantel in my family room and I'm tired of the white. My mantel is large and tall so I think black would be too much. It's open to my kitchen; both rooms are done in different shades of beiges, browns and some black accents. I was thinking about lightening up the walls and then painting the mantel a darker color, just not sure what color.

Does anyone have their mantel painted a different color - not wood stained? If so, can you please show some photos?

I think that a black-painted mantel would be very elegant -- and neutral enough to "take on" other colors throughout the room -- and for seasonal decorating too!

But with your colors -- perhaps a green? or even a dark rich pumpkin? or perhaps dark mustardy-gold?

Just some thoughts!

teacats - I keep toying with the black. It's off my kitchen, which has white/cream color cabinets - and a black island. Right now my family wall color is a carmel color, but I think that if a go a lighter color, that the black would go really good with it. Just afraid to take such a big step, especially since there's a large fire place screen that's black.

The other colors are a thought as well. Love greens, but don't really have any in my familyroom. Pumpkin color is what my foyer is.

My new build is getting close to complete, they are painting the interior now. I have a tray ceiling in the master bedroom, with crown molding at the bottom of it, and putting tape lighting in the crown cavity to illuminate the tray ceiling area. Six 4" recessed cans surround the tray ceiling, and we are going to put some sort of light or fan in the center of the tray ceiling area. So right now, the whole ceiling is painted white, and the crown trim is like a semi gloss white. Walls in the room are Sherwin Williams accessible beige. I've seen a few pics online where the short walls and ceiling in the tray area were painted a different color, and I like the look. Was thinking about using accessible beige in that area too, or a slightly darker shade of it. But the bedroom is not big, would it make the bedroom appear smaller?

For some examples, I just did a simple google search of mud room door colors and got plenty of hits. The darker gray colors can look good as well as an accent color. Are you currently using an accent color in ajoining rooms? That can be a start.

I agree with blue or green, nature’s colors. I painted my bedrooms Benjamin Moore Guilford Green, which has a good balance of spring green with a touch of blue undertones in some light, but is muted enough not to be annoying. It looked beautiful against the trees outside and the plants inside. It was really easy to match decor with it. I had it for years and I would use it again in a room with enough natural light. Google images for it. It looks like a different color in every pic. It was BM color of the year in 2015 so there are a lot of room pics.

One wall I painted shows the old color much more than than other walls

I would say, that it probably also shows on the other walls, but, the lighting is different, so it doesnt show as much. Walls can look different, when they have different lighting.

I like the idea of a black or deep chocolate brown painted mantle. Very elegant!

My neighbor just painted hers black and it looks great. Hers was stined so it was a much larger leap for her, no going back! Go with your gut. You can always repaint it another color.
