Another brass one. (but I like it!)

My husband found this at the flea market. It cost $15 and he rewired it for less than $5. I do want to make it lower. It was in our old house and we had lower ceilings there.

I wanted something casual and a little different, so went with lanterns. And with a big table, a pair worked better than a single fixture.

I, too, have a lantern over the formal dining table.

thanks dlm2000 ... we love it, too. We use it under a round table, but I don't care. It's from Pakistan, I think it's a Kazak. I picked up several similar (but smaller) rugs at, ahem, TJ Maxx a few years back. They used to have really awesome rugs, but I haven't seen anything good there in at least 5 years.

Mine is natural iron, it came with silk lamp shades, but not sure I'll use them. We put a dimmer on it. It's Designer's Fountain. Sorry the pic is so dark, but it's the only one I have.

cliff and joann - can you tell me what product you used to paint your brass chandelier? It looks beautiful. I also have a shiny brass chandelier that I like the shape of. And I think it is good quality (it is extremely heavy). It was in the house when we bought it. Strangely all the other fixtures in the house were cheap, builder grade and very ugly (and have all been replaced). I guess the POs spent all their money on the dining room chandelier.

segbrown every once in a while HomeGoods has some beautiful rugs - I need to look more consistently!

jill, we used rustolium (sp?)antique bronze spray paint.
We took the chady down and hung it outside
upside down, and gave it a few light coats
of spray paint until it was all well coated.

You all have such gorgeous dining rooms!

Here's my chandelier, it has both ORB and Amber in it.

Here's ours...it came with the house, matching light fixture in the foyer.

Just to add something different to the wonderful lights and beautiful dining rooms, here is our dining room.....by 2nd Avenue Lighting. From underneath and standing across the room.......prime rib dinner tonight, Happy New Year!

Most of our lights have the "candle" look, they go with the old world, Mediterranean, castle-ish look of the house. We are in greater San Diego and the style is not a trend but rather traditional in this area.

Wow! Thanks everyone for sharing your lovely lighting. You've given me a lot to think about. I'm loving seg's round fixture. Now I'm also wondering if I really need to go dark or if it matters. I think I'm overthinking this whole lighting thing.

Electrician's Fee: $400 to repair the previous owner's jury-rigged switch wiring, discovered during dimmer switch installation, here and throughout the house.

Wow -- those lanterns are too fabulous! I am sitting here with my jaw open, just gaga for them.

So that's our dining room chandelier and I still l-o-v-e it! An Italian friend I made here (in the Kitchen forum) made it for me. When friends ask about it I always say: "My virtual Italian lover made it for me." Well, my husband and I think it's funny! And it really is more special because of how it came about.

The other night when DH and I were putting the DR together for a dinner party HE suggested a new chandy. I really never gave much thought to it and think the one we have is just fine. However, after seeing all these pretties I am rethinking it. First, I think I'll try what Joanne did...very creative!

Our Schoenbeck crystal chandelier. We love it!

Mine is an antique art deco that I was lucky to nab many years ago at a much lower price than they go for today. I have a similar one in my living room.

It's real alabaster....

Simple chandelier, with simple shades. Shades are gold leafed and give a nice glow below. Side note- just purchased the buffet so still working on ideas for that wall.

Hi sumnerfan, thanks for the compliment. It is not beadboard but the original pressed tin from 1913. I had a hard time deciding what to paint it and finally decided on a creamy white. After some exploration, I do think it was originally painted white. The pattern is a kind of fleur de lis (sp?) and continues out in the front hall. I'm sorry that I don't have a close-up.

Mine was an ebay bust; literally; bought it for a song but arrived with one arm crushed; so the six arm chandelier became a 5 arm with a good cleaning, rewiring, etc.

I stopped over here hoping for this exact thread. I am currently shopping and struggling for a chandelier for our "formal" dining room/space. It is meant to be the formal dining, but it is litterally eight feet from the front door. There is no real foyer. It also has a 15 ceiling and only a wall and a half seperating it from everything else. The fixture in there is very wrong and light just seems to disapear. Everything is so expensive out there, its very frustrating.
Thanks Sumnerfan for starting this thread. It helps so much to be able to see the rooms with the fixtures instead of a store full of fixtures.
