What do you wish you had done differently when you built bed?
Comments (7)I made several boxes, 5 feet by 15 inches (they looked like hobbit coffins) and lined them up in fifteen foot runs. My idea was that if I got tired of using them for veggies, I could put them here or there in the yard as planters for irises or whatever, and the weight wouldn't be too bad so one person could move them. However, having boxes like that makes it hard to run a soaker hose under the soil surface. You either have to loop the soaker hose above the end walls of the boxes, or drill holes to run the hose. If I were to do it again, I'd use 16 foot 2x10 or 2x12 so I could have an uninterrupted run of hose. I'd also securely affix a small vertical pipe to the inside of the box with a female garden hose fitting poking out above the surface, and a male garden hose fitting under the surface attaching to the completely buried soaker hose. That way if anyone pulls on the supply hose it doesn't disturb the soaker hose. Why sixteen feet? Because that's the length of the cattle panel I use for a trellis; or, as you can see in the picture, you can bend three of them into Gothic arches to make 'a cathedral of tomato worship'....See MoreWhat do you wish you had in your walk-in pantry?
Comments (14)This is our present pantry built in the 1910's. Our washer and dry is opposite of the built in. In the future this will turn into a guest bath. My new pantry is under the stairs and I will have an L shape of shelves, etc. The back wall will have 16" built ins and the side will have 14" deep built ins with sliding glass windows at least 5' high for the uppers. This picture is taken from the half bath looking into the pantry. The finished space is actually 8 x 4 (when it was just studs I thought I measured 12') and starts after the bump out. I will have a shallow cabinet between the pantry and half bath (where the closer schoolhouse light fixture is located). My DH will be building my pantry. We'll buy Scherr doors for the lowers and probably glass doors for the far wall. We will probably have someone make the sliding windows. My kitchen is cherry buy I'm thinking of going oak for the pantry - I think it's a better period choice for our house. The kitchen is in the pre-1870's addition but the last major renovation was 1910's. I picked trim and many of my materials from that time frame for the kitchen....See MoreDo or die time- What do you wish someone had told you?
Comments (33)I wish I knew then about making sure that the flooring contractor would check on how level the slab was. Midway through laying the ceramic in the kitchen, his guy came upon a hump in the floor and although they made it work, well that was stupid. Don't skimp on the floors if you get tile. Go for something that's nice and flat (no beveling) so the mop will at least touch the grout, and of a high hardness. Mine is chipping where they meet from things being dropped on it. If I had to do it over, I actually think I'd go for the highest quality, cushioned vinyl roll out on the market, or at least a very high quality porcelain tile. I had Kentile (sp) in my old kitchen that was 15 years old and looked like new. Can't get it anymore, but sometimes I wish I'd pulled those tiles up and brought them with me! I didn't want wood because I have an engineered wood, BR1111 Amendiom surrounding the kitchen, and it's entirely too soft and scratches too easily for kitchen use. And, what a nightmare that would have been with them trying to glue down those floors on a big hump in the slab. I'm waiting and gathering before I proceed further, to soak up as much as I can from the experience here....See MoreWhat do you wish you had in your temporary kitchen?
Comments (33)I had a small utility room sink -- I think it's 5 or 6 inches deep, but it allowed us to wash most of the essentials, so we didn't have to do much in the bathtub. One of the things I did to minimize the big and messy things that would have to be cleaned was to get some corckpot liners (mixed feelings about whether that was worthwhile) and to precook some taco meat, sloppy joes, plain ground beef, some Italian sausage and I think we had some cubeed chicken or turkey -- all in zip bags inthe freezer. That really helped minimize greasy cleanups and large pan washing. I also made some cookie dough and had that inthe freezer -- I enjoyed baking a few cookies when the guys got home frmo school and felt like it helped them feel less like we were roughing it. For cooking meals, we did have a grill, camping stove, a turkey fryer that we cooked pasta in, a micro, crockpot and a toaster oven. The small toaster oven was the one thing I bought to help us get through, and it was worth it. Do keep a measuring cup and spoons out, as well as the basic utensils, a can opener, bottle opener and/or wine cork and a cutting board. Things like a real coffee mug, wine glasses or even a few plates or real flatware -- depending on your needs. Don't forget pet dishes....See Moresixtyohno
