I would keep both, and I would look for a patterned fabric with a little color in it -- all the colors of the room, right now, blend with each other, but they all seem the same.

PS: Do you keep the secretary open all the time?

LOL, pammyfay, the desk is open all the time, but it needs some straightening for sure! We use it a lot to store stationery, stamps, etc., so it rarely gets closed.

I think they look nice and go well with your other furnishings. You could pick a color from the rug or from the large painting for the seats. I might do away with the end table under the painting...it looks a little crowded there. Pretty room!

Love them and would pick up the yellow in your curtains for the upholstery. LOVE YOUR CURTAINS, that yellow and white plaid has always been a favorite of mine! I remember when you found that excellent cocktail table--- you are a great shopper/ finder!

The first set work very well (the rounded, lower ones). I Might go with some greens from the rug, and then add throw or throw pillow in the same shade for the sofa.

I love the wall with the desk, mirror, prints, WT. It all works so well together.

Is there a reason you are catty-cornering your sofa? Id love to see it centered under the art.

Wow, thanks all. I guess these are keepers. I brought them home last week and at first had trouble adjusting to the lower profile, even though that is what I initially liked about them.

mtnredux, I'm a longtime fan of your wonderful posts. The sofa was originally angled to make room in the corner for our Xmas tree, and we liked it there. But it could go back against the wall. I'm not sure the painting will work above it though; we have an 8 ft ceiling and there would barely be any room between the painting and the crown molding. I may try it that way again after the holidays though.

The other half of the room holds my grand piano and I have nowhere to store music and books, etc., so I was also thinking of using the corner for a wraparound bookshelf. If I do that I would have to keep the sofa angled.

I don't think they look bad but don't think they really do anything for your room either. I do think they look better than the current two though which don't seem to flow overall (just the one on the right I think). I also think for a cozy conversational seating area like that something more comfy would be better. I think I would opt for only one by the desk if it is reasonably comfortable (or the chair currently there) and a soft stuffed chair in the corner. Both for comfort and to balance the weight and feel of the sofa more. jm2c

I like the caned chairs. Is there anyway to put them side by side with a small table between them vs one on each side of the sofa? As far as color for the upholstery, maybe a blue (I see blue in that large print) or for fun, I would look at pinks that would match a color in the rug. NOT that mauve pink that we are all still getting over from the 80's, but a fresh bright pink with pow. Of course this type of pink would need to "audition" in the space in the form of a large fabric swatch.

I wish I could put the chairs closer together but the room isn't deep enough. I might be able to do that if I put the sofa against the wall though so I will try that after Christmas.

You have such a sharp eye, and you saw immediately that the painting needs to be connected to the room more effectively. I actually played with some turquoise accents in this room awhile back and that helped....I will work on that too. I hadn't thought of pink but I can get fabric samples very inexpensively so I will add that to my list. You are right that it should be something fun or fresh. The chairs can go grandma in a hurry otherwise!

Searching for "barrel back" cane chair on google images leads me to believe that a strong solid (velvet plush?) would be lovely. Although I like this image as well with a lighter solid:

Robot, thanks so much for that image! I wish I could transplant that exact chair into the room!! I am thinking a solid also. When I try stripes or patterns with some fabrics I already have, it somehow reads as being too busy. There is already a lot going on in the room and I want the chairs to complement the other elements. I LOVE that pillow. When I tried pillows on mine, though, they cover up all of the caning as the sides of these chairs are open. I'll keep that for inspiration though; maybe a similar pillow could go on the couch.

Robot, love that inspiration photo, and just had a thought as I was walking by the LR; wonder if I could cover the seats in a similar fashion as the pillow? With the trim running down the center?? Love the greek key motif. Would that look weird??

Lovely classic style room. As I get older and my design sense "evolves" I find I am drawn more and more to quality classic design.

I think those chairs would look great with a fat stripe, maybe in brighter color to spice up the room.

It's a beautiful room, and your furniture, including the cane chairs, enhance it's beauty! Maybe you wouldn't need to change out the fabric if you could find pillows that co-ordinate with the rug for each chair. If not, a plaid or paisley fabric might add a bit of pizzazz.

I'm with Lori. If the fabric is in good condition I'd leave them as they are and add a lumbar pillow in a pretty accent color.

They are stayingâ¦..along with a new CL couch I couldn't resist!

I found a white couch that I fell in love with and just went for it. I won't pick it up until after the holidays so I'll post pics then.

My current couch has served me well but it is quite formal, with brocade fabric and fringe. The new one is the same size but with cleaner lines and a cool herringbone weave/texture. My goal is to put pieces together that look classic and traditional but are also inviting and comfortable. I hope my gut was right when it told me to
get the couchâ¦..
