I saw that comment, too, and I was surprised. Here's an old thread where I talk about how noisy my cooktop is and people mention theirs that are silent. I don't have All Clad, but I now have 6 different brands of pots (Tramontina TriPly, Fissler, Wolfgang Puck, Simply Caphalon, TVS nonstick, Oneida Artisan nonstick) and they all buzz, so I believe it is more dependent on the cooktop than the cookware. Some of my pots (TVS) do buzz more than others.

Does she already have the All Clad? I'm pretty sure they do work on induction. Did you try a magnet?

Thanks Ginny20. She has the pots, but they are in storage so we cannot try the magnet test. She is looking at the GE induction....what brand do you have. Does anyone have experience with the GE?

I have the GE induction range and All Clad pans. No problems. I'm pretty sure all the all clad stuff is compatible, just check their website. The unit itself has a very, very soft hum/buzz sometimes as it cycles on and off, but honestly I can't even tell if it's always there and I just can't hear it, or if it's occasional. Even normal conversation or prep activities makes it undetectable. You have to be right next to it in a quiet room to hear it.

We LOVE the induction and our range. Even my DH, who was skeptical and wanted gas, loves it. Unless something has changed since December, the GE and the Electrolux are the two best options in that price range. There is a wonderful thread on appliances about them. I won't bore you with my selection process, but I have absolutely no regrets and am very happy with the GE.

Is there anything specific you want to know about? I just went through this process and own the range you are looking at, so feel free to ask!

A/C (old stainless tri-ply) works just fine on induction. At least at my house. Cheaper lines from A/C don't.

One caveat: the pots must be absolutely flat on the bottom to work well. My 12" A/C saute pan which is my workhorse (and about 20 years old) has some very slight warping which interferes with perfect induction utility. The slight warp makes the pot have hot spots with induction that are undetectable with gas.

Also excellent choices on induction are cast iron pots.

I have some of the much, much cheaper Tramontina Triply (Walmart.com) and they work as well as A/C.

Not all pots that will be magnetized will work well on induction. Some magnetize-able pots don't. It depends on the strength of the magnet and of course whether the bottom of the pot is perfectly flat. Those pots with rings or ridges on the bottom work less well.

Our cook top the GE Profile Induction and I would recommend it without hesitation. LOVE IT! No knobs and no trim just a touch screen. Very easy to keep clean.

The only noise I hear is when it is on high and it is really not much just a humm - buzz.

If her pans don't work that are in storage she has a reason to get new ones! We bought Calphalon Tri-Ply Stainless Steel Cookware from Bed Bath and Beyond they always have a 20 percent off coupon and a bonus pan offer as well as a $50 gift card. I hadn't bought new pots in 15 years so I was happy to get new ones to work on the induction.

I don't have my new cooktop yet. But, I did the magnet test. One of my All-Clad didn't work...it was one of the 5-ply. But, it's my understanding that the 5-ply are now supposed to be induction friendly as well. All the rest of mine were good to go.

I don't know if they will buzz or not. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks for the feedback. I was wondering if those with GE induction left the required 12 inch clearance. I know that other brands require less clearance, so can anyone recommend their cooktop?

We installed our 30 inch GE profile without the 12 inch clearance. As we read the manual we concluded it was referring to the GE Monogram 36" Induction Cook top for the 12 inch clearance. The cook top basically just sits in a whole cut in the granite and sealed with some foam tape. We have a small drawer under ours and I store the stove top manual, cleaning cloth and solution that came with the cook top.

I have a Kitchenaid. I do like it, and it didn't have the clearance requirements of many others. It also has a bridge burner, which I like for things like pan gravy. It was not expensive, and I think they're even cheaper now. But it clicks as the magnets go on and off.

There are old discussions of the clearance issue on the Appliances forum. We pretty much concluded that it is just CYA, and nothing seems to get warm enough to burn under our cooktops.
