Happy Birthday to me.. My backsplash is up.. but...

So excited. I love my backsplash.. It isn't grouted yet, will be done tomorrow...But he didn't realize (i know we discussed) that I wanted the backsplash to go all the way up to the celing behind the chimney.. If we hadn't just had the kitchen painted, I would say forget it, no big deal, but we ddin't and I really want it up to the ceilling so tomorrow when he grouts he will do that too then come back again on thursday..

What do ya think?

Looks beautiful! I agree with tiling it up to the ceiling behind the range/hood/chimney.

BTW, I love how you ended the tile with the pencil liner in the first pic. Very nice touch!

So, I guess I know why I am paralyzed with this decision. I don't really know how I want the kitchen to look. I do love the idea of it being sparkly and stuff, but I also love the idea of the juxtapostion of the modern and the glam. I hate tests, can someone take the Sweeby test for me? I think we may have figured out the solution to the fact that there are no bullnoses on the short side of the Italian tile available, so that is not stopping me anymore. I appreciate all of your responses, each one of them is a valid point and they all echo the thoughts in my head. I too think either one would work. I guess this is so hard because, it's not like a chandy--if it looks bad, ditch it and move on. It's the flippin' backsplash, it's attached to the house and there is no way we are replacing it on a whim. I just don't know what to do. I guess if I am not doing anything fancy behind the range, then the Italian tile would surely look great. Oh boy, this is killer. I wonder if they will allow me to order a square foot of each one and try it out. Probably have to order a minimum quantity. If anybody has any more thoughts, please feel free to give them to me. Jeanteach--not close enough to CT to buy tile, I'm outside Philly. Thanks for the information though. Suzanne1003--how the heck did you find that? The photo is so much better than the one on Mission Tile's site, that I do believe it might be too ornate for my kitchen (If I think shadow lines from a slight bevel on the Italian tiles are too much)-- I couldn't tell before that they are individual tiles, very nice though. I see I cross posted with a couple of other people doing mock ups. Jodi's right, the shadows make it look like a patchwork quilt and like I said, the lack of variation in the tile makes it difficult. Also, lighting is a factor. I try to flip the tile and work it in to give it more of a random pattern sometimes. I assumed these are 12x12 sheets of tile and scaled them all the same. Still not to scale in your kitchen, but figuring the normal space between countertop and cabinets is 18", I have two tile sheets (24") in that space. So they are smaller than they would really be. Didn't think about that while I was actually doing the mock-ups! DUH! LOL! Anyway, I'll let others take over for a while if they want to. Robin

You all are so sweet, and I appreciate all the compliments, especially today. I'm in a terrible funk because I just found out that a heating problem will necessitate removing my downstairs bedroom hardwood floor. Between that and the unending kitchen remodel, I'm about to tear my hair out. Please keep me posted if any of you buy Welbeck Tiles. I have about 35 plain ones left over (I must be an idiot when it comes to math), so I am thinking of buying a few more and tiling the tiny laundry area room counter. Evilbunnie (the world's best name!)--yes it's cork tile on the floor. I didn't go with durodesign, but I do love theirs too. It's Globus Cork--maple (www.corkfloor.com). Because of the terrible unevenness of my cement floors, I had to use "peel and stick" cork tiles (actually, they are pre-glued and then you put more adhesive down during installation). But here's the best part of Globus. They make these very interesting patterns--you design them and they come pre-made in strips so you don't have to put down all the little tiny pieces individually. I've taken a picture of the "breakfast nook" area of my kitchen where I put in a border. Besides loving the aethestics (even the heating and cooling guy who came to my house today told me how much he loved the floor), it's super comfortable to stand on and it is great insulation from the cold cement slab. I don't know how it will wear over time, but so far so good.

I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post.

Your backsplash looks wonderful! Just wanted to say Happy Birthday - its mine also! 51 today. can't believe its been an entire year since my 50th bash.

I'm still waiting on a cabinet to come before we can finish my backsplash. That would be a GREAT birthday present!!

Happy Birthday - it is my anniversary as well (14 years :) - so I will be celebrating with you. Unfortunately without a lovely back splash. I really like how the back splash works with the the island counter (great choice whatever it is ;) and is striking with the dark (black?) island - bold & successful choice. The back splash is a subtle compliment with nice details and I always love dark wood with the light counters. This is me blowing a birthday horn for you - blahhhhh!

Thanks everyone- I am really happy with it. I am having it done to the ceiling he is going to do it tomorrow when he grouts the rest and then will come back on thurs. to grout that as well..

Kitchenaddict- My island granite is Typhoon bordeaux. REALLY wanted it in my entire kitchen but at the time an extra $3000 seemed like a lot (we built the house so everything added up).. In reality, I should have, but I also like it being the centerpiece of my kitchen..

THe perimeter granite is Absolute Black, island is typhoon bordeaux and the tile I can't remember the manufacturer, but it is a tumbled travertine subway tile in Ivory.. I can look up the name for you..

Kaysd- the cabinets were custom made. They are actually alder wood stained a cinnamon cherry colord .. Wish I could be of more help!

Thank you!! I am loving it.. We just built our house in January and this is the FIRST time I can say i lOVE my kitchen.. I really liked it before, but now that it is painted and the BS is in, I really do LOVE IT!

Love your backsplash. Did I miss what material it is? Did you say what stone/tile it is? You kitchen looks very similar to my kitchen before last - same color cab, black granite. Backsplash we used 4 diff limestones that the tile guy cut into 3x6 bricks. Still looking for a picture! I loved the look. Current kitchen just didn't allow for so much darker colors :(
