Dining Room Decor Help

For Christmas we had family photos done and my favorite was this vertical shot. Any ideas on what to hang next to the photo? My home is contemporary. I can't find anything. TIA!

I think you need to post photos taken from farther back, and a couple of angles, to get a response.

Maybe put something below on the table/buffet (can't tell from the pic what it is) that are tall on each side instead of hanging something on each side. Another option would be to put a smaller picture on each side of the pic. You could always put the kids pics on each side if you have some others.

FingNugSnug- the dining room furniture was bought as a set about about 7 years ago. I do have different styles going in that room because I am trying to phase out the Tuscan style pieces. I am hoping to try and keep the buffet and table as I have seen similar pieces put with more streamlined chairs and decor and it seems to work. I guess I tend to like a eclectic look. Mmmbeeer- I didn't find it offensive at all! I appreciate your honesty. What are your feeling about my current table and buffet with new chairs? Do you think that will do the trick? My table is hard to see in the picture but much more streamlined than the chairs. Basically a trestle done in a dark finish. Majority of people seemed to not like the chairs with the rings on the back so maybe they are too fadish. Thoughts on that or another style of chair that might stand the test of time or at least 10 years or so. Lol!

I love your dining room and your dining room set! I like having a place for the family to have a quiet dinner. I share your fondness for the blue and white look. I think with the soft blue above and the white below, you could go with a chair fabric in a navy range, maybe in a lattice. This is a fabric I chose recently, but our dining room is part of the kitchen and that door opens to the garage. The general colors are similar though: Think how different it would be if you choose a lattice pattern or a stripe than if you went with a floral/botanical in essentially the same color range. I hadn't intended that entry mat to be part of the color scheme in the photo, but now that I look at it, a dark rug under your table is a possibility. Not black, but dark, and probably not a solid - it would show every speck. I'm not getting how the drapes fit into the room. The green stripe just seems not to go at all, but it must (even if not perfect) or you wouldn't have gotten as far as trying it out. Could you post a picture that shows how the drape wall fits into the rest of the room?

I’d lean towards making room feel casual, airy, and bright for your family. There are so many directions you could head and suggest looking for inspiration pictures that appeal to you and then narrow down the components you are drawn to. I think your chairs are fine and will be complimented by the look below, using a black sideboard to work with darkness of table and provide impact against subdued floor and wall color. Add lighter and larger art for an infusion of soft color and you could bring back your plant for warmth. Accessorize side board with pottery and table with a large bowl. A large black chandelier would make a big difference and on back wall add a series of prints. I’d also shorten drapes so they aren’t puddled and you could change rod to a thick black one - Amazon has some nice ones at good prices.

When my Mom died, we got rid of the stuff Mom wanted out right away. That's easy. Then there's the stuff you know doesn't have sentimental value or any value for you or your family. That stuff can also go to Goodwill, etc. Don't stress yourself with garage sale unless you are really strapped for cash. Right away the room will start feeling different for you and you can see what you want to do from there. I initially thought the tablecloth was red anyway, so you could go with a solid color tablecloth OR no tablecloth and use a runner and placemats. My Dad uses a tablecloth, easy to clean, just throw in the wash. There are probably repeat things and things that you just won't use as a single guy, so a lot of that can go. Be kind to yourself, you don't have to throw it all out, find a middle ground. For me, it's better to keep some of my Mom's stuff and use it, than to keep all of it and just have it sitting there, hardly ever even looked at. You'll remember your late wife better if you use her stuff than try to preserve it all untouched. Go slow. You'll find what fits your new life as it evolves. Seek help and support from other widows and widowers!!

Why not make a photo wall with some more casual shots in similar frames? I'd put it to the left and then make a grouping, so that more of the wall is covered. Not all the photos have to have people in them--could be landscapes that have meaning for you, etc.

What a beautiful family! I'm not sure I'd use the large photo as a focal point though. I'd put it on an end wall or the beginning of a hallway with other family pictures, or in a living room short wall with family pictures there.

I used to put our pictures in the dining room too, they were fun for awhile, then I got sick of seeing myself. lol.

I completely agree with oakleyok. My dad has a very large portrait of his wife (not my mother) in the dining room of their home, and I find it really distracting to have such a large photo (of a person, any person/people) as a focal point on a wall. I also think surrounding it with other family photos in similar frames would be nice.
