Stainless appliance. Should I stick with Stainless sinks? HELP

I would opinions. I am building a new house with a kitchen that has a huge sub zero stainless fridge and freezer. Stainless diswahers, double drawer fridge in island, compactor, micro, double ovens. Should I stick with stainless for my sinks? Or go with cafe brown silgranite? I am so confused, but i need to order by tomorrow. Do you like single or double bowl? Any tips would be great.

I would go with whatever look you want...If, for instance, you want the sinks to blend with the counter, go with what's closest. I have white sinks with stainless appliances...They don't have to match.

If you'll have 2 sinks, I think I'd recommend single bowl. I've always preferred dbl bowl, but that's when I had only one sink and food prep and dirty dish collection all had to share one sink. Now that I have a prep sink, I wish I'd gotten a large single bowl for the main sink, so I could fit stove parts, etc in it to wash. If you do go dbl bowl, I'd always recommend what they call a 1 3/4 sink...It has one standard bowl and one larger, instead of 2 equally sized that are both too small to soak roasting pans, etc.

Hi carrie..

I agree with rhome. I have SS appliances and a black silgranit sink. The sink compliments my counter top. It doesn't have to match the appliances in my opinion.

I have a 60/40 sink. I don't have a prep sink. It works for me.

I have a 33" Vigo ss apron sink. It's been installed for 8 months but we have only been in the house for 6 months. The outside of the sink looks as good as the day we got it. The inside does have scratches but that is to be expected. It is only dh and I, we don't have any children yet. I am pretty careful in the kitchen but Dh is not at all. I also found a thread in the metal working forum debating different ways of removing scratches from stainless steel. Of course everyone seemed to have a different opinion. morton, I also expect to see wear and patina over time with my ss sink. At the moment, I think I'm in "new car" mode - I want to preserve the shiny newness of everything for as long as possible! DH hasn't seen me clean so much in all the time we've been married :-) Having said that, I have a scratch on the cooktop and an indelible mark on our wood island top already - no biggie. We wanted to choose things that would appear to be appropriate for our old house and old houses have patina. Our old kitchen had a ss sink that was at least 20 yrs old and I certainly didn't baby it the way I'm doing with this one. Looked just fine. I guess it goes back to the linen pants analogy that's often used to determine whether someone would love soapstone or not: if the wrinkles bother you, it may not be for you. And we have soapstone too so I guess you know we don't mind a ding or two! Eliz

Wow, another thing I love/hate about GW - it always makes you think and sometimes second guess! I will have creamy cabinets (with a slight coffee glaze) and a cherry island. My copper farmhouse sink is sitting right beside me and I am in love with it and it isn't even out of the box. However, I did not even give a thought to appliance colors - thanks for that!!!! I will have a stainless steel w/black double oven on the wall opposite the sink. The fridge/freezer will have panels. The cooktop is black w/ss trim and the microwave is ss built-in on the same wall as the sink. My dishwasher is the one throwing a wrench in the whole thing because it is only a few years old and so we have decided not to replace it. I thought I had bought one that could accept a panel - but I didn't so that will be black and right next to the sink. Anyway, my point is I think SS appliances will be fine. I never considered that they wouldn't. I sort of consider them as neutral. Take a look at the finshed kitchen blogs under copper sinks. There aren't alot of them but they will give you an idea of what others have done. Also, I think if you can find hardware that has some copper elements to it, that would be a nice tie-in with the sink. Now, what are you doing about a faucet? That's where I've been spending my time lately! Good luck.

cmara: It's never going to match perfectly and you don't want it to. The stainless on appliances is really very delicate; scratches/dents can be catastrophic. Not so with the stainless on apron sinks which is solid 18 gauge at least and is easily refinishable. I've pounded out dents to customer satisfaction and removed gouges with my belt sander then matched the factory finish. An apron front sink is a working surface; your dishwasher is not. For a really fussy customer, I could bring a stainless apron to beyond factory to match an appliance more closely, but it's gonna cost ya. The basin doesn't even match the apron right out of the box. This difference isn't as pronounced on the Kohlers as opposed to the Urban Place shown here. Apparently the Mexicans don't polish as much as the Chinese. Or make contrast your friend with the new Elkay Quartz Luxe, shown here with an adjacent dishwasher: Relax, it will look great.

IMHO, the decision bet. SS and Silgranit does have to do with looks, but also has to do with cleanability. We were about to pull the trigger on a Kraus 16-gauge stainless sink for our kitchen redo. But then we thought about our current stainless sink's water spots and also how quickly the sink looks dirty or dingy. Yes, it shines beautifully immediately after cleaning, but that doesn't last long. We changed to a Blanco Silgranit, and while it's not installed yet, what a relief it'll be not to have to deal with the water spots any more. We chose the Anthracite color cause it'll look good with our granite.

We went single bowl, without hesitation. The kitchen is small, we have room for a 30" sink max, and we didn't like the idea of bowls too small to soak the largest pans. The topic of single or double bowl sinks is discussed A LOT on this forum. One point mentioned frequently that resonates for me is that double bowl sinks were great when many people didn't have a dishwasher. But we spent $$$ on a dishwasher, and can see no reason now to have a double bowl for separating clean water from dirty, or soapy water from clear water or whatever. That, plus our 30" maximum size, made a double bowl not make sense for us.
