Is it difficult to maintain glass subway tile backsplash?
Comments (4)We have a glass tile backsplash; a mix of glossy and matte strips. We don't find it difficult to clean or keep looking good. I rarely need to wipe the splash, except for over the range. I usually use a microfiber or paper towel and whatever spray I happen to be using at the time (alcohol-water mixture, Perfect Kitchen or Perfect Glass...). It takes more work to clean the tile (and white grout) just above the back vent/trim on our gas range, which it likely would with any light-colored tile. When I roast a chicken for example, using high heat and convection fan, I usually need to clean the splash over the range (I'm guessing vented cooking grease and/or high heat causes the discoloration we see). I've used Oxyclean, STT's HD-Clean, Dawn Power Dissolver, and even BKF, without harming the tile (no scratches). Of course, you might want to test any cleaning products on sample or leftover tile if you're unsure if it will cause any damage. I personally think it's very low-maintenance and love the look!...See MoreMaintaining the White Marble Backsplash
Comments (17)Hello All, Great thread, IÂve enjoyed the commentary as well as the links cmeltzer posted. I too want to redo our downstairs main bath. Our house is early to mid 20Âs, wood frame and I want to keep it reasonably "period". Like most of you I also love what WZ has to offer in their Tribeca line but IÂm not a big fan of the price tag either; and considering I own a company that does marble restoration and do a lot of maintenance and repair work for several high-end tile "boutiques" in our area and they will give me their pricing on it  itÂs still to expensive. So those links offer an affordable option. As for sealing your back splashes, you all are right on the money. Yes, you do need to seal it but donÂt be mistaken. Sealing with a good quality penetrating sealer is very important but in case youÂre not aware, that sealer is only going to protect against water and/or oil based staining. If you have a pot of pasta sauce simmering on the back burner and some of the sauce (an acid) splatters onto your backsplash (marble, i.e. a calcium based, acid sensitive stone) it will etch it. (Etches on stone look like water marks that wonÂt come off.) Other than watching against things like that you all will be in good shape. For the record I used Miracle Sealants 511 Porous Plus on my own Trav, kitchen floor. It worked okay initially but eventually (about a year out) the grout was stained. For me thatÂs not a big deal because thatÂs what we do, is restore that type of thing and I can have one of our crews take care of it. But for you all you might want to consider using a little better quality product like Dry TreatÂs Satin Proof. If you do chose to do that donÂt worry about compatibility issues with 511 and SP, the SP will go right through the 511 and into the stone. It is a penetrating product and normally it wonÂt change the appearance of the stone, not to mention, properly applied it will last a good 15 years. Just so no one gets the wrong idea here we do not sell SP, we only use it in our company as well as in my own home. I hope this has helped a little and if you should ever have any question about how to take care of your natural stone please donÂt hesitate to ask. Again thanks for referencing those links; now all I need to find are some great tile/stone base boards and chair rails. (Read: great ((affordable)) tile/stone base boards and chair rails.) Comments (25)he hasn't been back to fix it. says he isn't sure when he will be back to finish it. the guy on his team who did the job the first time had a death in the family. what gets me is when he started my kitchen he left the first two days at noon to go finish a job. he even said "if it was you I would do it for you as well" now it's me and he isn't standing behind that. we have a huge family get together memorial day weekend and I would like my kitchen to be finished and cured by then! I'm tempted to just finish it myself and not pay him for this portion....See MoreDark grout ruined white ceramic subway tile backsplash
Comments (31)Quick update for anyone who might care or finds themselves in a similar situation... I ordered some more matte finish tiles to play with and while playing I thought I would grab some of the leftover tiles I already have and try it with the grout I had bought at Lowe’s which was Mapei Flexcolor CQ in pearl gray. Well needless to say the crackle issue did not appear at all. So I’m assuming it was the unsanded grout that was recommended to me when I ordered the tile that was the problem? The Mapei grout that I used does not specify sanded or unsanded but there are no visible lines after grouting with it....See Morecat_mom
