Who's still here, roll call 2014
Comments (31)Hi Annette and Everyone, I have been a member since 2001. GW members have helped me so much. Big hugs to everyone!!! I so appreciate you sharing. I hope you don't mind if I do. For the first time in my life, I have space to plant. I live in PA now with an acre and a half and a dream of one huge cottage garden. It was a blank slate with self-sown maple trees when I bought here 11 years ago. We have installed many, many gardens but are barely making a dent. I get so far and the ideas just stop (or funds run out). Basically, I am trying to keep the view which is awesome of the farmlands all around and trees in the distance. It is challenging because to plant a garden next to my one neighbor will be creating a division so I will lose the long green. There is also a septic mound smack in the middle of the property. I keep threatening to put a round door on it and a sign that reads, "No Admittance except on party business" for those of you familiar with the Hobbit. There is also a bluebird trail that is used every year and so I also need to keep open space for the birds. So basically I want open space but also a filled cottage garden. LOL! I guess I need to post another pic and get some ideas from you all. Meanwhile, I placed my first order for 2015 - lots of glads. See what happens when I don't have Gardener's World to watch? Happy 2015!!!...See MoreHelp! Builder Stained Poplar Wood Turned Purple
Comments (6)Any idiot finisher that would stain poplar purple isn't going to take the time to bleach anything---nor would you want him to with his track record. What did the sample look like that they did for you? I'd personally point to that and tell them that you don't care what they have to do to get it to look like that because it's not your problem. It's THEIR problem. But, unless your contract specified the finish and incorporated the look of the sample into it, you've got shaky ground to stand on. Time to yell at the GC. He is the one who is supposed to solve problems here. However, if he's the one who specified poplar to begin with, then I think you might have a whole lot more issues with cost cutting on the project that you just don't know about. That would worry me far worse than purple cabinets!...See MoreHand Applique: Lesson One
Comments (11)Jean, Are the windows square or are they crooked with points? Like on Strolling the Block? Once we figure that out we can decide the best way to do this.... I just bought a book that is AWESOME for applique! It is called Baltimore Elegance, and it has patterns to do a Baltimore album quilt. But it has 6 lessons that teach you applique including reverse, back basting and all sorts of stuff I don't know how to do. The beginning has the best explanations of needleturn and prepared applique I have ever seen!...See MoreDaughter vs Her Stalker: I Am So Afraid!
Comments (96)lolauren, your law enforcement contacts said exactly what I was trying to say, and the term "false sense of security' is at the core of my message. My experience was such an eye-opener to me. Up until that time, as a young woman living in a city, I'd collected tips and techniques to be used in the event I found myself in a dire situation. I walked away from that horrible time thinking, "Yeah, none of that would have worked," That's when I came up with my polar bear analogy because I think it's a good visual for people. Just ask yourself how effective a particular technique would be against a polar bear, and that's probably close to the truth. I use the polar bear as my visual not only to depict strength but also because there was absolutely ZERO human connection between my assailant and me. Our eye-to-eye contact was like NOTHING I had ever, or have since, experienced. It wasn't actually like looking into the eyes of an animal, as my analogy suggests because I always see truth, empathy, a desire to understand, and to be understood when I look into the eyes of animals. It was more like a robot, I suppose, or an alien maybe. I have always found it difficult to describe, but I recognized instantly that it was something I'd never seen. My absolute takeaway was the realization that the only real defense is to prevent the situation. We cannot prevent every situation, of course. But we can prevent more than we think. A quick trip to the ATM at 9pm can probably be squeezed in on the way to work. Going out on a date with a fellow, even though we feel a 'little weird' about something, can be canceled. Etc. In this case, I do think the fact that the young man seems to have been warned off by the police is very good news. And it sounds like Lynn's daughter is staying vigilant, which is excellent....See Morejlcorp
