Has anyone stained brick?

We have a fireplace in our family room that is floor to ceiling gray brick. The colors in the room are very warm and the cool tone of the brick really stands out and dominates the room. My husband is very against painting it. I posted pics of the room before here and someone suggested staining the brick and he is open to that.

Now we are about to tackle all our issues with this room and I am wondering if anyone has done this. Also, how messy is the process vs using paint? I'd love to see any pics as well. I did a quick search here and on the fireplace forum and didn't find any.

I don't have any pictures, but my mom did the inside of the FP at their lakehouse. She did not do the grout/cement lines. Only the brick. I would practice on single bricks first.

just wanted to add that Hanson serves not only all of the US but CA as well. Originally when I posted, I thought Athens referred to a style collection as opposed to the regional plant. Nonetheless, with all the people on this board I've seen from Texas (and down south in general) and all the general expertise I figured I'd get a few people who had run across them or even had them on a consideration list at some point. I'll pretend that was a genuine "good luck" wish. thanks anyway.

has anyone resurfaced a brick fireplace with soapstone?

We just had our brick fireplace re-surfaced in granite with a white surround. The contractor who worked on it actually advised against matching the kitchen granite -- even though the family room opens up right to the kitchen. He said that a more eclectic style is used where you'd use a variety of stones, mouldings, etc from room to room -- giving it a more custom look. Everything matching is more of a builder standard look. So don't feel the need to match your kitchen counters.

I have done brick interior walls twice. Thin brick is ridiculously expensive, so I made my Higgins jig and cut regular brick with a 20" brick saw that I rented. I ended up paying a bit less than a dollar per square foot for brick slips. The second time I just used queen brick as I was installing over a footer and the engineer approved full brick. Once you factor in time it was even cheaper.

I did it, but not with stain. My FP had an orangey stone that I hated; I took gray acrylic craft paint and watered it down, then "painted" it on. What a difference it made. And for less than a dollar. I'll try to post pics if you want them.
