Solar Shades or light filtering shades

Help, I need your insight!

We have two windows 72W x 84"H that are south facing. We are considering a roller shade that will filter the light, however I see there are solar shades and light filtering shades. Question! What is the difference between them? Which one should we consider for our windows?

Has anyone used this type of shade on this large of a window? Were you happy with the results and functionality?

We would like to look out our windows, but need to keep the South Texas heat out.

Light filtering shades have a few degrees to pick from; the smaller the holes, the more light is filtered. I had chocolate brown ones in a former house that had a southern exposition in the master, and 3 sets of french doors, lots of heat and light were coming in, I loved that I was able to walk in the room and still see the view, yet not have so much heat generated.
We got used to sleeping with light in the morning.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand it, you can't see through light filtering shades. You can see through solar shades.

slowjane, we have a retractable awning for an east facing room on our house in Northern California and we love it. We were using the room as a nursery and in the summer it would be uncomfortably hot by late morning just when the baby wanted a nap -- the awning solved that. As a bonus, our patio is now useable in the summer. Ours was probably around $1000? ordered through Costco, but it is motorized and I'm guessing it's 12-15 ft wide (it spans a set of French doors and two additional windows). I'd guess you might get a manual retractable awning for a single window for a lot less? Good luck.

Wow what a view! Just gorgeous!!! Don’t blame you for not wanting to cover up even for a minute. I also didn’t want shades and I have just installed solar film on our back windows, I also didn’t want to darken the room.. We installed a film that has very little color in them but supposedly blocks like 97% of the harmful UV rays. You cannot tell that they have it on. I was just saying though what if this is all hype and they really aren’t blocking the rays?! Haha I have only had them about three months so no way to know for sure I guess. I really haven’t noticed a difference at all with them on. When you touch the glass they are hot though so maybe not allowing the heat to pass through.

This is what I did. We installed room darkening shades inside the window depth. Then, over them, we installed Duette linen pull up blinds. I also added drapes. In the evening I raise the Duettes and pull down the darkening shades, then the Duettes and it's pitch black in the room. I can't stand any light showing. I even taped the light on the phone and tv. This was ten years ago and still holding up like they were installed yesterday.

Yes, graywings, you are correct.

Although it may have been confusing to the shopper since often time s salesperson don't even know how to describe what they are selling and misinform.

Of course the fastest way to find an answer about anything would be to Google and read up on a product.

What I described are solar shades, I guess; I'll try to find a picture of mine.
