Social media coming soon?!?

Over in kitchens forum, they are testing adding social media bar to this forum...so far the response has been overwhelming. You might want to check it out and add your opinion if you haven't already.

A lot of the threads over there already have the social media bar. I don't think Tamara was getting opinions. It appears that it could be a done deal.

I noticed it yesterday but just now went there and posted my opinion. I wouldn't be happy if it becomes "a done deal".

Teresa - I re-read your original post and realized you wanted your opinion to stand out on its own rather than be part of the existing dialogues. "I am starting a new thread so my comments don't get buried in Gina's thread on the same subject." So I thought perhaps it was rude of me to derail your thread with a differing opinion and I used the new edit function to delete my posts. Coincidentally, and perhaps a bit ironically, the edit feature is another "improvement" that I spoke out against. But now that this thread is taking a turn anyway... dcarch - I'm impressed with the lack of spam you receive! If I took "advantage" of all the via gra and "enhancement" offers I receive, I could probably lay pipe from my back yard all the way up to Canada! ;-) I'm sure that your success is due in no small part to your vigilance to stay anonymous. As many emails as we've exchanged over the years, I still have no idea what your name is. I don't even know where in the NY Metro area you live, Brooklyn, Westchester, or somewhere else in the generic "NYC", depending on your post. To be clear, I have absolutely no issue with that, I totally respect your privacy, and I'd hate to see you "exposed" because some tracking device worked its way through the cracks due to GW's interaction with social media. While you may be smart enough to evade those with ill intent, others of us may not be. Why make life easy for those who wish to track us down? I do realize a lot of the outcry on these threads is probably somewhat mass hysteria. I'm sure there is plenty of ignorance shared among the scores of us who oppose this change as well as the two or three who support it.

At some point the GW forums will change, it is inevitable as technologies and their uses constantly change. Some will dislike it and leave but there will be plenty of new people to fill in and the forum will continue to be a useful site for home and garden questions/ discussions. I do not think that people will stop posting pics but maybe some will start being a bit more careful. How many times have you clicked on a photo to be led to a photobucket account that shows the person's full name, private albums, and family photos? This forum is a free service, owned by a media company, and is as open to the world as it can get. People should be cautious about what is posted no matter if there is a media bar or not and be realistic that updates will happen.

I actually contemplated creating such a group because I am a total garden weenie and always post garden minutia that may be too much even for my "Close Friends" list that I post to. So I jokingly suggested one day that I needed a "Secret Garden Weenies" group, and many of my Friends actually said, "Yes, I want to join!" So how would I go about creating such a group, in other words, how could I create a group that was secret and all those in the group knew it was secret but no one else knew it existed? And how could I add new members? My Facebook page is not very private, it is an iteration of my public persona, and I often invite people I network with personally or professionally to "friend" me. I post certain things only to a "Close Friends" list I made, but that is not the same as a "secret" group.

People have more discretionary income than they once did. When my parents and when I was looking at houses, one took what one got and made the best of it. I knew some pretty wealthy people and I can only remember one friend from when we lived in LA (she lived way up the hill in Beverly Hills) who remodeled her kitchen, and a friend in St Louis who had the world's smallest kitchen, 3 children and entertained and cooked nearly every single weekend. People just didn't spend money on such thing! They MADE them work! Now, a 5 year old kitchen in Darien CT is considered a "total gut job". I redid my kitchen of 32 years last year. Was it useable? Yes! Had I made it attractive? Yes? Could it be improved? Absolutely yes! And a new kitchen was on my bucket list, which at then age 72, seemed to have some "time relevance"! I have NO REGRETS! Moving my refrigerator made an enormous difference both in the function of the kitchen and in its appearance. When the main entrance into the kitchen feels "cramped" (because it IS cramped!", then that colors one's impression of the entire kitchen which was NOT cramped at all! Now, the kitchen appears quite spacious for an 11 x 15 ft kitchen! It has tons of counter space, good separation of work areas for multiple cooks, and the replacement of bottom cabinets with big drawers was worth doing even if everything else had worked perfectly. But redoing my kitchen was far from a "necessity". It was a luxury to which I treated myself and I have no regrets. I think at my age, I "earned" it by living for so many years with multiple kitchens that were anything but ideal. But even in them, I cooked fabulous meals and I never was beside myself every single time I went into my kitchen. It's all a mindset today.

As I recall, many of the snarky people on the garden related threads fled to Facebook and tried to take others with them.

As I stated over there -- if this becomes a "Done Deal" -- then I will be leaving GW. Or at least steeping way way back.

Here's what I said on the Kitchens thread about this, and I'm saying it again here:

No. If that happens, I am through. Gone, finished, through.
The world is too distracting already, and privacy aside, part of the beauty of the GW forums is that they function like genuine conversations among self-selected people. The advice is good because it is thoughtful, unlike most social media, which is tossed at you from a moving train.
Already, spammers are creeping in regularly, and it's only because we know each other and know our norms and vocabularies that we can spot them and root them out.

Finally, here are some examples of antiquated things:

Reposting my objection from the kitchen thread:

If this plan is realized I will have to change the gallery locations of all my photos so the links to them will be broken.
I DO NOT WANT PHOTOS OF MY HOME ON FACEBOOK.

Perhaps if everyone changes the online location of their photos (by renaming them, changing the gallery locations, etc.) and thereby REMOVES THE CONTENT, GW will rethink this decision. Because when content goes, so do advertisers...

okaleyok,

I'm not saying that, I just noticed it was gone. GW is it's own kind of social network don't cha think? And over on the kitchen side I noticed the thread had a whole lot of NO going on, and it seemed to me the OP got her behind handed to her. LOL, the tabs went away, and I'm guessing the voice of NO was heard loud and clear. But who knows?
