Gettin carpet installed 2 days before Chrismas, am I insane?

It is the last thing that needs to be done in our home 'refresh' and it is only 2 rooms, but I must me insane! I have 20 people coming for dinner on Christmas Eve and I know they are all going to want to see what we have done. It is just the kids rooms getting carpet, but boy do they have a lot of stuff! They are sleeping on the couch tonight and DH and I are sleeping surrounded by dressers and bins.

I know it will all work out, but right now I am wondering what was I thinking! Or can I just blame it on DH???

Do you have to ask, lol??? We've all done that kind of thing... that's why we are all here lauraella. Enjoy your new carpet! You will enjoy the holidays so much more looking at it :)

Juniper - You have to really want to build a house... really want to. It's more expensive. It's stressful. It's very drawn out. It's incredibly difficult to manage. Did I mention it's expensive. When our build was about half through I lost a sister to cancer. I honestly couldn't care less about building a house at that time. I wish I was more in tune, but it simply wasn't a priority. In a way, that saved me a ton of aggravation. I simply trusted my builder to do his job. At times I'd get involved, but for the most part I had made a fairly comprehensive guide for what we wanted. In the long run that list was a really great thing. Jump forward a few months and it's more challenging stuff. Our other house didn't sell so I reluctantly leased it out for a year. I'm praying my tenant doesn't trash it and the market improves. If not, I guess I'll just keep working till I'm 70. My Mom worked till she was 75... If you got plenty of bids, checked your contractor's references, and had a few conversations with folks who've recently built, I can't imagine you didn't expect some of this stuff. Just keep telling yourself it's only money and you can't take it with you. Your contractor and his subs have one way to make money... work for you or someone else. If you aren't paying a decent wage you'll have some pretty shady characters in your new build and I'm sure you've read plenty of horror stories about no insurance, lawsuits, and sub-standard work. Just dig deep and keep smiling when you write those checks... Good luck! Saftgeek-

Busy day - Macbook has been crashing, got that post out in between crashes. Worked with Apple Care on the phone, think they fixed it. So yes, IR Scan during blower door test. I'm sure I will get all the details, but he said it's not uncommon, but because of the drafty house, he could not get the fan up to a certain level. Forget what that number was or the value of that number. So the house did not get that cold either. The blower was running for a long time, and the house cooled down from 70 to about 63. I expected much worse after you guys wrote about it in here. I think I expected the inside to feel like outside. Anyway, he pointed out the edges of all walls, at the corners and top rails where you can see there is no insulation. I think you can clearly see that the walls are insulated ok. Attic access panels are killers. We dont even try to fake it here, just a thin wood or sheetrock panel, we have 3 access points. He suggested buying a can of Mastic, spread it on the back and press on insulation, it would help. He suggested sealing any recessed lights, and using the spray fluffy insulation in attics. For one of the attics that has an air handler, he suggests creating a conditioned attic space by insulating the walls, but I dont think I agree with that. For the Crawl, he first suggests I stop any water entry, yes there is right now, might be hard to fix. I have two Sumps down there, but somehow water gets in, and just hangs out on the floor, never more than 1/16 inch deep, but spreads out. Then he says insulating the walls of the crawl to make it air tight, no venting. Or the other approach is to insulate the ceiling or main floor - floor. It's insulated now, but he says it's not doing anything, Its installed backwards, and only a few inches thick . He said I could go with a spray foam, a little pricey, or a real thick high R value insulation. I will share the report when it comes. Was nice having the house warm over the last 24 hours, but I used well over 300 KV in that time.

Samantha, Absolutely, lack of expansion joints could have also been the part of the problem, which is unrelated to grout joint size. When installing, manufacturer instructions comes first, then the standards second if there is missing or conflicting information and instruction. If there is a failure, an inspector (or a court) will first use manufacturer specs and instructions, because they are the liable responsible party in a claim, so their information takes presidence. Thats what installer must follow first if there is conflict, and if there is missing information, the TCNA/ANSI standards come in. Now, many manufacturers refer to the TCNA/ANSI standards. Additionally, some manufacturers do not offer all needed information which then the TCNA/ANSI standards kick in. Every installer should be well versed in both. There are many tile and stone manufacturers who still allow for ultra thin grout joints. In regards to the standards changes you mention in grout joint sizes, indeed the TCNA/ANSI has made recommendations for the first time concerning grout joint size and spacing. To completely understand the new changes you have to understand how recommendations are made. When they say "in general", these are not absolute standards. Simply guidance lacking any other source taking presidence. When they say "absolute", these are standards that are never to be strayed from. The new changes on grout joint width is an "in general recommendation" or situational recommendation. Ultimately, the project owner should choose the grout joint they desire. -from the TCNA website. Please view the TCNA link for more information. It explains it pretty well. If you have tile cut or manufactured to tight size tolerances, you can have any joint size you wish. Of course, as I stated before, not all tile is able to be installed with the ultra thin grout joints. Again this is situational. There is no absolute standard for tile joint width. Tile it is a finish topical product, relying on the subfloor/framing/substrate structure for rigidity and in-range deflection for its stability and structure. Now if you continue to believe otherwise, that the tile system itself aides in overall system stability and structural integrity and/or that grout joint size matters at all when tile sizing is withing parameters, I really dont know how else to convince you. Since this obviosuly matters a great deal to you, I would suggest you buy a copy of the standards. Its relatively inexpensive. Then you can read for yourself in context. Also I would suggest that you start reading up on tile manufacturers installation guidelines and instruction for various products you may be interested in, as they take presidence, although they usually are in line with the standards. Pretty much anything in the $3 a square foot range up will be decent quality. You want nylon or smartstrand. For a bedroom, nothing beats a plush for comfort under foot. It feels exactly like it sounds, like plush velvet on your bare feet. But, if seeing your footprints or vacuum tracks bothers you, maybe a plush isn't for you. Maybe you'd want a frieze, which is a short shag. But, you walk on the sides of the fibers on a frieze, so it won't be as durable as with a plush where you walk on the ends of the strands. However, it will hide traffic paths more, and can also feel soft because of the bulk of the yard. All carpet these days has built in stain protection except for the very cheapest, so don't let something like that in a "name" deter you from buying what feels and looks best to you. As with anything, take it home and see how it feels underfoot to you. Or, you could do the matching wood (did you ever get that project done?) in the bedrooms (selling upgrade) and have a really nice wool carpet edgebound to be a large area rug underneath. You get the benefit of taking the rug with you at selling time then.

Hi!

I've got you beat! I've got company coming for Christmas Eve dinner as well, and right now I've got 2 tile men tiling both of our upstairs bathrooms! floors, backsplashes, etc. They were at my house from 8:00am until about 9:30pm last night. They are arriving again today and finishing the job. The floors were done last night, but the backsplashes and grouting will be done today. Then dh and I have to clean up, replace the quarter round, re-paint it and replace both toilets!!! Yikes...what was I thinking????

I'm glad I'm not the only crazy one :o)

We seem to get more done when we have a deadline (party/Christmas/etc.) Otherwise it takes forever to get something done around our house. We have a Superbowl party every year and usually have a project finishing up the day before SB!!

We just finished installing traverine in our basement on Friday. We painted all weekend...realized the accent paint color was the wrong color....had to repaint a few walls last night...carpenter putting in the doors/frames yesterday and today....as well as the wood base (creating yet more dust)....need to clean floor and put furniture back in place sometime tonight....carpet going on the stairs tomorrow morning. Nothing like cutting it close!

I have no idea when I'm going to get my house clean!! OH and the first of our company arrives this afternoon! We'll have about 20 people for Christmas Eve. But at least I'll have an excuse if there is dust hanging around!!

Well I am glad I am not alone! Of course both kids want their rooms different when we put them back together. At least there is no paint involved! We got new windows over the summer and just put up quickie curtians in their rooms, have roman shades to put up, just haven't done it yet, maybe now we can.

I still have baking and a salad to get ready plus finishing cleaning the house.

Yes we all love a challenge! Now what will my next one be...

We too are in disarray for Christmas, but at least we don't have company coming. We installed new windows, interior trim & doors this fall, and all need to be painted. We're patching/repainting all the walls too. I've got the project on hold for the holidays, but all the furniture in every room has been shoved out of the way.

Hope your holiday gathering is lots of fun. Just think, after it's over you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your pretty "new" home.

Lucky you! I would take it on xmas day if it was getting the project done. Have a great time. It will make you and kids rush to get everything in its place. Merry Christmas

Yeah carpet is done and looks great! Contractor came buy and did base in DD's room and then we ran out! My fault should have picked up more, but just got added to the list. Won't get more now till after Christmas, which is fine since it is supposed to rain the next two days.

Both kids are re designing their furniture arrangements, told them they are on their own I have the rest of the house to take care of. Glad that is done. Now to finish my office.

We're all insane. We moved into our house this weekend, the 19th, 6 days before Christmas. Surrounded by boxes and we still don't have the tree up, better get on that. But you have to do what you have to do.

Glad your carpet is in and looking good!
