This is hilarious. Right before I clicked on GW and saw your post, I was thinking about how pretty that bathroom is, but how much PRETTIER it would be if the walls were the right color.

I have been going back and forth for a few days about whether to say anything. I took my cue from the post where you said you knew it was a different green than the curtain, but that you LIKED that fact.

I love the green on the walls and I like the green on the curtain, but they don't work very well together. I just kept thinking about what a shame was that you ordered your paint without waiting for the curtain to arrive so you could match the paint to the curtain, sigh. But it was already ordered so there was no point in mentioning it.

Soooo, how are you going to change the color now? Are you going to pick up a color from the curtain or go with something you have elsewhere. I am sorry you have to spend the money and worse, redo your hard work, but it is going to be worth it when you get those walls right!

Jen, how I wish my mistake was just a wee bathroom! No, I rolled the wrong color in the upstairs hall, staircase, family room, kitchen, foyer, back hall ... 2 weeks worth of painting it myself. It has to go. How bad could BM Manchester Tan be? We'll in my house it turns a shade of dijon yellow. Not the picture I had in my mind. Yep, just paint! I might just hire a painter/handyman I've used before to help out, but I have to pick that perfect color first. Oy!

I feel partly like a complete idiot for attempting to convince myself that it was right, and partly very relieved because I finally admitted to it. ::sigh:: It's one of those things that in certain lights, it would seem fine - but I tend to obsess over things like this, and sometimes I'd leave the room and then go right back to take another quick look and I'd just have a rather uneasy feeling, ya know? It's still not so much that I want to match the shower curtain. I truly do like a mix of greens - if they're the right greens. It's the yellowish cast that the Warren Acres takes on in this space that's just killin' it for me. Of course, the tones in the shower curtain do lean more towards the grayish-greenish-blue-minty hues, so that's why the yellowish undertones in the paint just weren't meshing with it. Do you suppose if I do walk in with the lid to the bread box, someone at BM can help me match that shade?

Ohhhh, Chispa! How my heart goes out to you! I can well imagine how you must have felt when you first made the admission that it just wasn't right. Oh my ... you're right, mine is just a tiny room and I have can have it knocked out in just a few sessions. It could be much worse, as you have pointed out!

Odds are good especially if you go in the AM.

The good news about repainting is so much of the prep work is already done. The color that didn't work out always makes a great substrate to hold a new color.

It's like one coat of paint hugging the other and when you're done you get to enjoy the color love. When it's over, it's always worth it. :)

Thanks, funcolors! I'll just think of the work I've already done as "prep". And true enough, I did tell DH that covering light green with light green won't be nearly the chore as going over that awful turquoise paint was.

The two shades above are markedly different, but I do think I need something with blue undertones. Can you think of any reason why I shouldn't go with something minty-er? On my screen, that Mint Chocolate Chip looks like a luscious color. I'm off to Google more images to see if I can find it used in actual rooms ...

A green with a blue undertone is a much better choice for a bathroom than a yellow undertone. Despite the lighting, it's just a better fit for a bathroom - with the mirrors and make up and hair color, etc. JMHO

I think Kittery might still be too yellow. Van Alen is a good one and I'd add Hancock Green HC-117 to the list. For a bolder option, take a look at Seedling AF-450. It has a very vintage green feel IMO. A few more, Surf Green 2036-60, Leisure green 2035-60, Light Pistachio 2034-60 and Acadia Green 2034-50 (this one is really vintage too and very pretty)

Thank you so very much, funcolors! I've looked at all of your suggestions and love every one of them! Some of the really do have a wonderful vintage feel (especially Seedling, as you say). I'm very much drawn to Van Alen and Hancock. I'm glad you recommended them, because I think that either of them might work nicely. Here's my little mockup with the Van Alen chip (it doesn't match the shower curtain quite as precisely as Hancock, but I am really, really loving this color):

DH just came in and said he likes Van Alen. Funcolors, if you had to choose between Van Alen and Hancock for my room, which do you think would work best?

Van and Hancock - used both and both are lovely. Nicely toned yet they deliver the notion of green no problem.

Van Alen is the *mintier* of the two. Hancock may very well coordinate the best as far as undertones and creating a tighter color scheme but it is not as minty, doesn't have as blue of an undertone as Van Alen.

Numbers from the rug suggest 473 Weekend Getaway. That's on the same strip as tea light 471 and aganthus green 472. 472 is a rather popular green too - flexible and works with various qualities of inherent light.

If you are committed to that curtain then I think it has to be your guide in choosing wall color. Start by matching the colors in the curtain and then look at all of the colors that are close to the matches.
It seems to me that you prefer "crisp" colors. In trying to work with the LA curtain, you are going to end up with a muted green on your walls. The muted greens on the curtain are very broken up by other colors and the dullness is offset by the crisper pinks. You are going to see a lot of the unbroken green on your wall when you paint them, so the question is, how attractive do you find that green on its own?

Don't you have another curtain on order? And doesn't that curtain have all crisp colors? Would the green in that curtain look fine with the Warren? Conversely will the other curtain look ok if you paint the room to match the LA?

I'm pretty sure your bright pink/aqua curtain would clash with a room painted to go with the LA.

You started out wanting a cottage look. There are plenty of cottage style shower curtains that stick to clear colors. And obviously, you could change your wall color to white or pink, which would work with all of the curtains.

Just giving you some food for thought before you commit to working with this one curtain, because it is taking you to a very different color than you started with! Good luck at BM!

I just took another look at your bathroom AJ and imo a *very* light green, almost white to the eye, may work best.

Any saturated green color will make your red floor, well, look redder and stand out more. Also, a white will better camoflage the wall inconsistencies and brighten the space.

It would also allow you to run a beadboard type shelf or molding around the room (where rough wall meets smooth) without making a small room look smaller.

My only question regarding the repainting and I'd defer to funcolors is, you stated you were or had treated the 'wet' spaces with some type of sealer? Will that be a paint adhesion issue?

AuntJen, I did exactly the same thing in my master bath. Picked a color that was supposed to pick up one of the warmer tones in the slate tile to provide a blance to all of the cool tones in the slate, handed it to the contractor and had them paint. This was the last step in a 3 week remod, and I was soooo excited to see it done. At the end of the day, I walked in and it screamed YELLOW - not a nice yellow, an industrial, prison torture cell yellow. It did pick up one of the tones in the slate, just not the tone I wanted. So, that weekend I repainted it a pale grey green, which totally changed the room.
That's the beauty of paint (even though painting is so not my favorite thing to do) - 1 or 2 coats and a mistaken choice is gone!

Your room will be beautiful when you get the tone on the walls you envision in your head - it's such a shame we can't just download our visions to the paint mixers and not have to bother with all of the swatches!

WAIT TILL YOU GET THE RUG!!!! Seriously, I know you don't like what's on there, but can you wait for delivery so you really know all the players in this mix?

Also, FWIW, I painted a bathroom for a friend of mine a few years ago - Weekend Getaway - and it's one of the most gorgeous colors. I don't know if it's right for your space but it is a beauty.

i prefer hancock green over the van alen with your rug and curtain...
the tone of your tealight swatch doesn't look similar (to me) to the weekend getaway color that FC shows... from the colors on my monitor, hancock or weekend getaway look best!

You paint more than anyone I know! I've been struggling the past week painting outdoors ... spindles and rails and posts and now I have to finish the trim on the screened porch. It's so friggin' tedious. How do you enjoy doing it so much?

I am one of the last people who would ever use pink, but I think a barely there pink would be a lot easier for you to pick and would look lovely with the curtain and the rug. No need to worry about tones if you went that route.
If not, I'd go much lighter with the green.
I do think the advice to wait until you have the rug is right on....

I agree with Paulines - the colors you are considering may be too saturated (if that's the correct term) for a small room. I would be looking at the palest version on whatever paint strip you are considering.

auntjen - Just wanted to say that I had the very same experience with a small bathroom. The color I wanted seemed so right, but ended up being too intense in that room with the lighting. I had it lightened, but it's still pretty intense. I left it because it was my kids' bathroom, but no doubt I'll be changing it in the future. It is only paint, and it isn't permanent. I LOVE your beautiful bathroom, and I know it will turn out great. All your hard work and fretting will pay off, I promise! If in doubt about the paint color, go lighter, that's my advice. :o)

Just taking a break to throw back a Diet Coke and a couple if oatmeal-raisin cookies (ahhh, fuel for painting!) to say that I have one coat up on a couple of walls and I don't like Hancock Green ... I absolutely adore it! It is going to be the perfect soft, vintage minty-gray-green that this room has been crying out for. The difference between HC and Warren Acres is night and day. WA is so harsh under the lights and HC is so pretty and soothing. It's like my eyes are breathing a huge sigh of relief. (I know, that's not possible.)

I haven't applied the sealer/topcoat over the paint around the tub yet, so adherence will not be an issue for the new paint.

Natal, I can't explain why I enjoy painting so much, but I guess I do! Not so much the physical act itself, but the immediate transformation ... I love that!

You know you're sick of painting and it's time to call it a day when you trip over the paint can and yell it to "MOVE!", and you call your paintbrush a filthy name ("effer!") when it drips.

Boy, am I beat. It's more than halfway done though, and I am thrilled. The annoyance is definitely worth it.
