plug in wall sconces;buffet lamps in bedroom?

I would like to add some lighting in my small master bedroom and have a couple of ideas. 1)Use plug in wall sconces on either side of the bed or on either side of the mirror above the dresser. Has anyone used those? Or 2)use buffet lamps on my dresser. I currently have one lamp on a bedside table, and one lamp on my dresser

I recently put 2 small buffet lamps on my bedroom dresser and am very pleased with them. I used small bulbs so they are not very bright but they give a very nice glow to the room.

Do you have the buffet lamps already? If so, just try it. If not and you buy them and don't like them on your dresser could you use them somewhere else? Or return them.

I have had plug-in sconces beside the bed -- but they took the place of lights on the nightstands. I liked them, got them at Pottery Barn. The plug-in sconces that look best, IMHO, are those that have a metal channel/extension that takes the electrical cord down the wall some distance from the light fixture itself. That keeps the look of the sconce from being too compromised by the kinky cord angling to the outlet.

We have a vintage retro lamp on DH's chest of drawers. It helps light up a corner of the room that is otherwise dark (unless the closet is open and that light is on). I like the look. I think your buffet lights could do the same thing.

For what purpose should she light the volume of the room? Of course she need not light the room at all...flashlights and book lights will work too...or maybe a few candles... Sorry, don't mean to be so snarky, but the point is, beyond the simply functional "don't trip" purpose of lighting, is how do you want the room to look. Rather than "illuminating the flaws" I see it as highlighting the big features in the room are the fabulous beams and volume ceiling. They make a smaller room look and feel much larger. No point in having them if you can't see them. I like my rooms well lit, if for nothing else, cleaning purposes, so you can see what you're vacuuming. It's also helpful when you've lost that earring back or dropped a button. It's also an age thing...as I've gotten older, I appreciate brighter lights more. Granted, you don't want a bedroom to be an operating room, and it need not go that bright. But there are things called dimmers which allow you to set the lighting based on the activity, be it cleaning, or just dropping something off, or sitting and relaxing, or reading in bed, or gentle wakening in the a.m. You can always dim a bright light, but without sufficient lighting, you won't have that option to go brighter when you want to. I've been in bedrooms with high cathedral ceilings and what I don't like is when they cast inky shadows on the ceilings and make you feel like you are alone in a cavern. Insufficient lighting can cause that. Good lighting can eliminate it. Below is an article on tips for lighting cathedral ceilings that may be helpful. Well poo! I studied the space I want to put the lamps in and my bed isn't centered on the window that it backs up to. My bathroom door gets in the way. I can't use a pocket door because there are pipes in the wall and I can't make the door open inwards because it would hit the toilet. I'm going to measure tonight and see if I can move the bed to another wall. CB2 had cheaper lamps that weren't wired on their website but they were pretty big. I think the biggest lampshade I could fit would be 16". The other wall I could possibly move to doesn't have any outlets and it would be hard to install any because it's mostly windows so hardwired may be my only choice. I may have to get a lamp with a pull chain on the lamp itself instead of the wall switches. I searched for the Candice Olsen picture but couldn't find it. I love most of her designs. De

mammapinky Yes, they are. I did that on purpose. I wanted a different illusion than just the mirrors hanging, if that makes sense. I want the mirrors and curtains anchoring the bed, like a headboard. Thank you! To everyone mentioning the mirror height, don't tell my husband! (lol) He absolutely hates hanging curtains, shelves, mirrors and paintings. haha I'll have to wait to the weekend or a day we both have the time and we shall raise them. I'll have to ease him into it. ;) Should they go the same height as the curtains? This is just my opinion. I personally like a lot of colour so I’d probably change the duvet colour for some lush tropical print but I get the idea behind the white so it’s fine. Laundry hamper: sorry, I think it’s hideous and really jars with what you’re trying to achieve. Toss it and replace it with baskets type hampers like these or similar. I quite like the bar cart and think it works well with your tropical/Indian theme. Marble does not and neither do those thin pointy legs on the tables you like. Something like the bar cart in style but smaller would work. At the same time I’d move the lamp stand to the corner between the bar stand and the side wall. It’s a cool lamp but where it is gives the impression of a vulture overhanging the bed. For bedside lamps something with a shade similar to the main lamp would look “together”. The round mirror is the wrong size/shape for over the bed. If you want something over the bed (why a mirror?) I’d go for a long rectangular print you like, or move the print you already have there and put the mirror between the two doors where the print currently is. Or you could put your full length mirror there. I’m not sold on the idea of having all the artwork at the same height but matching frames would pull it all together. I think the frame you have on the Daybreak print works well so I’d go with that. You could change the chair for something similar in a tan/gold I think. Plant stands are a good idea but the ones you have chosen don’t work with your theme IMO. Something more like these in a lighter wood is more tropical/Indian I think. Put the plants in brass pots like this. I think the main issue I have with the things you have chosen is that they are more Swedish minimalist than tropical which is a bit more lush. You need to decide which it is that you really want.

I have the plug-in sconces in my oh so small master bedroom. I lucked out because my drapes can hide the wires. And, my husband attached a cord so that I don't have to stretch to turn it on/off. I bought these a few years ago at IKEA, very cheap. I also had (expensive) ones from RH which came with the metal channel to hide the cord.
I do like not having a lamp on my end tables. There is a lamp on the long dresser, but I'm trying to convince my husband that I *need* a chandelier hung!

Thank you all. If I get the sconces, I will definitely get the ones with a channel to hide the cord. The outlet is behind the bed, so that should work. I haven't purchased buffet lamps as still looking for something to fall in love with. When I reach the point that I'm ready for the plunge I'll look more earnestly. Thanks again for the opinions. paintergirl, I'd love a chandelier too...maybe in my next life!
