I actually had them done - DH did the carpentry on the island and boxes above the cabinets. The painter sanded, primed and rolled one coat (to fill pores), then sanded smooth and sprayed BM Satin Impervo #267. It look several coats. There are so many doors and drawers I wouldn't have attempted this myself. For a smaller space it would be worth renting a sprayer.

That looks great!! I'm not huge fan of painted cabinets - just prefer stained wood myself - but I do think your transformation is fantastic. Just beautiful!

Thanks everyone - it does feel great to have it finished and to be done with the worn down orange oak, yellow floors and the slimy, broken grout on the counter tile. UGH! I'm most happy not to have the barrier island. It was horrible.

Very lovely!! I always love to see people redo on a big time budget (we are facing that challenge now). You were so fortunate to have those gorgeous floors already too. I agree it looks much better without that island. I also love the beadboard and supports on your penninsula.

Gosh I just missed how you said the floors were previously yellowed - they look pretty good in the "before" to me though! But this is coming from someone who is living with pink-peachy tile floors with brown grout. :)

Wow! Looks great! Good to hear you had them pro painted. We have only 13 doors and it is taking forever! We are probably going to add some glass insets, too.

Very nice! A while back either on the kit or decorating forum someone questioned "why paint?" They should see these pictures.

The floors were yellow, scratched and bare in spots. They hadn't been refinished in 17 years. It was time.

Congratulations!!! What a fantastic update; it's great when you can use the existing cabinets and change their look. I had 80's oak plywood cabinets and couldn't reuse them because we changed the configuration and the layout wasn't optimal.

I love hearing and seeing stories of how the creative use of paint, new hardware, backsplash, etc., totally transforms an existing kitchen.

Great transformation! And green, too! I love the hardware you chose-- it looks great with the door style. Looks like you spent $40 k more! Your layout is so much more functional. And the floors! They make such a difference, don't they? The technique you used to paint the doors sounds like the paint will wear like iron. Enjoy your new space and feel proud!

Great job. Question about island vs. peninsula. How do you feel about it now that you've switched? We have a long island and I think about doing the pen. thing but then I think I'd have to walk around it to get outside....

I hated my island with a passion. It was between the fridge and sink. My neighbor has the same kitchen and can't wait to get rid of her island. I made the walkway large enough so I don't feel trapped. If the kitchen was wider I may have made the peninsula an island. The only downside is that the fridge has no counter next to it but we didn't want to move it. I love not having the island. My old kitchen was smaller and had an island but it was fine because it wasn't in the way all the time.

I had the exact same cabinets, both in oak and in the style. I just got rid of mine (part of my de-oaking process as sadly, there is more in the house) with brand new cabinets but I have to say that your kitchen looks fantastic at just a fraction of what mine cost me. Hats off to you, it looks bright, fresh and from this century!

I'm in the process of getting estimates for a very similar renovation - paint, counters and refinishing the floor. Do you mind giving more detail on your prices? What did the painting cost? It looks great, how did you find a painter you liked? How about the floor and granite? I was thinking of a black granite, but love the look of yours. What's it called? I'm so happy to see a modest reno can come out so perfect! Great job!

Winnipusaukeefan - I got lots of bids and used several contractors from service magic.

The painter charged me $25 per door or drawer or shelf, including frames. It ended up costing $1650, but I had estimates up to $8K! I do think she underbid, she told me to tell neighbors who have inquired she'd charge $35 for future projects. Insist your painter make a tent on site. Mine painted at her location and it was a pain to transport the doors and drawers back because it takes so long for the paint to cure. I would also suggest filling in the cracks, etc. We didn't and there are some flaws I might change. I had about 60 drawers and doors and some shelves.

The backsplash tile is 4x4 tumbled travertine in light walnut, the frame is a darker shade (don't remember the name) 12 x12's cut in strips. I got a close out on the tile and paid about $250 for all 50 sq feet. Installation and misc materials were another $600.

The floor was refinished for about $2.45/ft.

The granite is Santa Cecilia Napoli - $3200 (85ft).

Lumber, corbels and beadboard were about $150.

Pulls and knobs were purchased through ebay for $110.

Sink is a Blanco Silgranit in Anthracite. I got it on line. ($320 + $100 for black basket strainer and ring)

I had three doors cut and fitted for glass at a local glass comapny. ($210)
