Using an indoor/outdoor rug in my living room?

Hello, We need a large (at least 9x12) rug for our new great room. I've been searching and can't seem to find one I like for less than $800, which I really don't want to spend. I was thinking about doing an indoor/outdoor rug instead. The prices on those are much more reasonable. We don't sit on the floor in that room. The lounging area is in the basement, which has carpet, so I'm not really worried about comfort. Any ideas? What do you think? Is this a great idea, or a bad one...Could I find an indoor/outdoor rug that would look nice in a great room? Or would it be obvious that it belongs outside?

I have one outdoors on my back porch that I would use in a casual room indoors. I son't know if World Market carries any that large, but you might find some at a Marshall's Home Goods if you haven't looked there.

There are some very nice looking ones out there - of course you can!!! They're very stain & fade resistant.

Absolutely you can. But, re sourcing for under $800 - have you checked out Rugs Usa? They've got a large range of styles/materials at really reasonable prices, free shipping and have great customer service. I've gotten a lot of rugs from them and been really happy in all ways. An example of their customer service: I placed a multiple rug order one night, and the next day noticed they'd posted a 'deeper discount' on some of the rugs due to a Columbus Day promotion. I called their customer service number, and as soon as they pulled up my order, offered to credit my card for the difference - I didn't even have to ask the question! I became a loyal customer of theirs after that!

I have a navy & white runner between my island and sink/countertops at our lakehouse. There's plenty of foot traffic back there, and lots of food prep. Everything has washed off that rug - spaghetti sauce, blueberry jam, spilled coffee, etc. I've had it for 4 yrs. I spot clean it and vacuum regularly. Early spring and late fall I put it out on the deck on a nice day and give it a good sudsing w/ detergent, hose it off and let it thoroughly dry in the sunshine. It looks practically new. My daughter has the black and ivory striped one under the dining table where her family (w/ 2 little ones) eats every meal. She cares for hers much as I do mine. She's had it for 2 yrs and it looks great. Between us we own 8 Dash & Albert rugs. Two are woven cotton & the rest indoor/outdoor. I can highly recommend, but would advise a rug pad for the runner to prevent slipping & sliding.

Thanks! I love the one you posted! My room is 16x16 and I am thinking I need something bigger then a 8x10 which makes it harder to find something. The rug I posted is a 9x12 which I think would be about right as far as size goes. Would you agree or could I go with a 8x10?

Most modern tables are veneer over a substrate, generally MDF. So you have a number of failure points: - Finish not UV or water resistant - Glue not water resistant - MDF will irreversibly swell when wet - Veneer can peel loose - Wood likely to warp or crack under extreme swings in temperature and humidity. Without seeing and investigating the particular piece, there's a quite high chance it will be trash within a year.

mfn, they are totally great on hardwood (at least I think so. That's the only flooring I have ;). Like others have said, just keep them vacuumed and take them out occasionally to hose them off to keep them clean. My D&A rugs have a lot of white in them, which is quite daring for a house with a man, a klutzy gal (me) and Golden Retrievers (well, one GR now). When they have gotten stained, I have just sprayed with a solution of bleach and water, let sit, and then rinsed. Looks good as new! Now, don't do this with other brands unless it specifically says that you can, but with the Dash and Albert rugs you care encouraged Oh, and another note. From my experience the thinner waffle weave type rug liners do not hold down these types of rugs well. It's best to get the thicker rug liners (which will also give you a bit of cushion when working in the kitchen. HTH!

Another option that might be worth checking out if you like the look is rugs from local antique/estate auctions. I would have thought they were cost prohibitive but last summer I went to an auction with a friend who needed furniture and rugs for a much larger home she'd just moved into. She got three really attractive rugs for under $600, because the auction had about 35 rugs to sell in addition to everything else, and so they didn't spend much time on each rug. (she also didn't win three or four rugs because the bidding went too fast).

So if you like the antique rug look and there are a lot of them at your local auctions, you might get lucky.

I'm considering doing this for our family room as I've seen some really nice indoor/outdoor rugs in catalogs lately. Some even mention that they are as at home inside as out.
I am so tired of our solid colored family room carpet getting yucky and dingy so fast, I want something that I can haul outside and spray/scrub off.
In our master bath we have a very large indoor/outdoor polyprop. rug in the center of the room to eliminate the need for numerous small rugs. It looks like a tone on tone beige raised damask rug. I believe it was Pottery Barn but I lucked into it several years ago at Marshalls.

what's the request on material? wool or nylon.. you may check with some international websites if you want to have low price and ok quality. but the delivery usually take around 10 days..

Go to Ballard Designs. They have gorgeous indoor/outdoor rugs at great prices, lots on sale.I bought 4 of them and love them. Easy care, too. Be sure and read the customer reviews! Teresa

Depends on how informal your room is. We have one in our basement "game room" that looks good. I got it from Overstock. Not sure if I'd use it in my living room, though. Another idea is something like seagrass or sisal. Check out Natural Area Rugs web site. Overstock has some too -- I ordered a couple seagrass ones for our beach house and was very impressed with the quality. I also have one in our kitchen -- same as the one below -- that is much nicer than I expected it to be!

Dash and albert has a ton of 9x12 cotton rugs for $400

you see them all the time in shelter mags, surprising since they are so reasonable

I own two big ones and a bunch of small ones I use in bathrooms... they will feel a lot nicer

I have them in my LR, DR, entry & hallway. All the same pattern - from RugStudio. Got them when we first moved here to go with existing furniture that I've had for years. Wanted something to get me through until I could get new. They have held up well for 6+years. Similar in pattern but different color to the link below. Made in Belgium.

Dash and Albert also has a great selection of indoor/outdoor rugs which look exactly like their cotton rugs - I got one for the living room in my beach house and love it!

the small ones ive successfully washed in cold water and laid flat to dry

I have 9x12 in my lake house for about 6 yrs, I reversed it butt haven't cleaned it

I am about to put an indoor/outdoor rug in my office so I hope it's ok! I've found some at ZGallerie and Cost Plus that are much less. I imagine you will be able to find quite a few on sale since summer is over.
