The usual sizes in ready made rugs is 7 or 8 by 10, 9 by 12, 12 by 14 or 15 (I think).

Ideally, you should put the rug in front of the sofa (not under it), exposing a little bit of wood bewtween the sofa and the rug and either have the two chairs be over the rug or not over the rug. They say it's not a good idea to have a chair partly on rug. But I think it will look okay if just the front of the chairs is over the rug.

You will want the rug to be at least as long as the sofa or better as long as the sofa and the two end tables. If it is somewhere in between those two extremes, just center it.

The rug should be as long as the couch, (not counting any fringed ends), the front legs of the couch should sit on the rug, and the front legs of the chairs should sit on the rug as well.

Just wondering if you have ever tried the room with the couch facing the fireplace, and the chairs on either side of the fireplace?

Would you consider a rug with some color and pattern? A beige rug would just seem to eat up the coffee table. Perhaps this one in either the sage multi or gold multi colorway?

Finally, I would lower the art over the fireplace so that the bottom of the frame is about where the top of the smaller frame is. Add some lovely candlesticks and green or deep red candles on one side, perhaps a pretty planter on the other side. I would also love to see the mantel in stained wood the color of your flooring, tho the white works well with the trim color and the formal feel of the room.

I'll 2nd what les has advised regarding rug size - it may be helpful to put some blue painters tape down, once you are clear on the furniture arrangement. The front legs should be seated on the rug

Before I reached les post I had the same thought regarding the furniture arrangement in the room. I would try the suggested configuration - then determine rug size.

Do you have old pics w/previous rug? & what size was the rug. Are you set on the color?

The furniture looks in great condition - if you want a change you could consider a slip cover for the sofa in a neutral color & add some nice decorative pillows to coordinate.

The coffee table is usually centered between the long ends of the rug. Two options: the rug can be along the front edge of the sofa or it can be placed under the sofa's front legs, 2 to 3 inches behind the front legs. The back legs of a sofa usually do not get placed on the rug unless the rug is a very large rug.

Thanks everyone for your help so far. Les and jej, other neighbors with the same split have the arrangement that you are talking about. But in my case the piano is in the way, and it wouldn't be easy to enter the room. Also, you lose one end table and we need light at night in this room. Thanks too, for the rug suggestion.
