mascarpone or acadia cabinets need matching subway tile

Hi,

We are remodeling our kitchen and are deciding between BM mascarpone and Acadia white for our cabinets. I am wondering if anyone has found a basic white subway tile that matches either of these two colors (for the backsplash). I know that many people think it is not important to "match" and although I agree in many instances, I know myself and I know that I will be bothered if the subway tile and the cabinet color are close, but not the same.

We will have hard wood floors and leathered jet mist countertops.

I don't have a backsplash yet, but wanted to chime in to let you know that I absolutely ADORE my BM Marscapone cabinetry. It is a GORGEOUS soft white. Not too yellow, not too stark. I am absolutely thrilled. Our counters are leathered nevada matrix (so also dark) an dour floors are a copper/black/gray faux slate porcelain tile.

I have eggshell cabinets, soapstone counters and travertine floors. I spent a lot of time picking out 2 backsplash options: an off-white subway tile that was a perfect match to my cabinets & a slate blue crackle subway tile. My husband hated both options & said he wanted honed carrara (which we have on our island). Virginia Tile (where I got my floors & backsplash samples) didn't have any honed carrara subways, so I found some at Ann Sacks for about $12. When I went to return samples to Virgina Tile, I found out they just started carrying a 3x6 honed carrara tile for about $10, so I ordered it sight unseen since they didn't have samples in yet. I was really happy with the color & quality of the tiles when they arrived. Also, I used an enhancing sealer on my backsplash to bring out the color a little more. Here is a pic of my new kitchen:

nik, Welcome! A couple of thoughts: if you love absolute black but are worried about maintenance, look at a leathered finish. It is much more forgiving than the polished finish to smudges, etc. There might be a reason you aren't seeing a lot of pictures with your color cabs and white tile - you might be right and it might be too bright. Try to get some sample tiles and bring them home and tape them to the wall to get an idea. You might find the answer really fast! Check the Finished Kitchen blog and Backsplash slideshow (link to FKB below, backsplash slideshow at FKB) for more pics to see if anyone else has done it - there are lots of successful rule breakers here! Maybe consider an off-white subway. Again checking a sample in your kitchen with your cabs and counter will help. If you both love the glass mosaic you might be able to incorporate it in a small area - like behind the backsplash or as an accent with 2 or 3 rows of mosaic between rows of subway - there are some examples in the finished backsplashes. Although the tile will be below the white cabinets, it won't have the same lighting (being either in the shadow of the cabinets or being lit with UC lighting, which may have a different effect than the overhead lighting). So trying to match the cabinets without having everying in place is probably an exercise in tilting at windmills. I think all three choices would probably look fine, so you are starting from a good point. The silk matches the counter the best. The pearl is closest to the cabs UNDER THE LIGHTING IN THE PHOTOS. But I don't have a strong preference, and I do think that there's a good chance that lighting would completely change my evaluation.

megtannahill - thank you! It's 1in unglazed porcelain hex tile with white and two shades of grey (no black) so it has a matte finish. We have black and white hex tile in our bathroom but like you we felt the contrast was too harsh for our smallish kitchen. The tile is from Heritage Tile/Subway Mosaics. We laid out the design and the made the sheets for us. Dal Tile offers similar colors and finish but the edges are quite as rectified and they only offer solid color fields. This isn't bad if you just want to do a border but if you want a full on mosaic you're probably better off getting someone to make it for you than go through the madness of popping out all the tiles as you go. If you do want to go the custom route they can make about anything you want at Heritage Tile or they have a lot of predesigned options. M G - that looks great! I would see a soft white with a satin finish with a light grey grout (that matches the color in the counters) looking very nice in there. If you don't need trim pieces Terra Verre has a white subway tile with nice edges that could look good in your kitchen.

I don't have an answer, but have you considered finding a tile you love and then having paint custom mixed to match? It's easy to tweak paint color, tile... not so easy.

They're pricey, but I believe the Heath Ceramics tiles in Opaque White are a pretty good match for Acadia White. (I see on their website that they now have a color called "New Opaque White" instead, though, so no clue if that is similar...) Unfortunately I didn't keep the sample so can't doublecheck, though.

What ended up being a better plan for us was to do tile in a brighter white than the Acadia (which our trim and cabinets are painted in). We also have white appliances and I didn't want some whites to match and some not to match, as if we couldn't get an exact match. It seems to work, so that could also be an option---just be sure the shade works with the creamy tones of whichever white you go with.

I am just completing pur kitchen Reno. I have Durasupreme cabinets in Acadia white. I used Sonoma Tiles, the Market Collection in Mohave white. I will try and post a picture later. But it is a great match. I used 4x4 and subways with a bead detail. There are a lot of options with this collection.

I had also thought of paint matching but you really have to see how the tile looks in your lighting. The paint and tile when vertical will look different in your kitchen with your lighting. I'd get samples if I were you... paint samples and tile samples.

Bethcw - Thank you so much for letting me know that you love your mascarpone cabinets. This is such a big decision - I think Mascarpone looks beautiful in the sample, it's nice to hear you love it on your cabinets!

nutherokie - I agree that approach makes sense, and I may have to do that. That being said, I really love the mascarpone and acadia paints and I don't feel strongly about subway tile. Maybe I haven't seen enough to really notice the difference between tiles . . .

remodelfla - I would like to get as many samples as possible. Unfortunately, I don't live in an area where I can look at many tile samples. I think I'm going to have to order samples, so I'm hoping to narrow it down.

Thanks for all of your help, and I will definitely try to figure out how to post pictures as this renovation moves forward!

I have my walls painted with BM Mascarpone and I think that it is a good match for my back-splash which is Rixi Crema tile. (My cabinets are not painted; they are cherry.) Rixi Crema is not exactly a basic white (it is kind of a crazed cream-colored tile) which is what you seemed to ask for, but it is a gorgeous tile and looks great with the Mascarpone. The subways in it are 2 1/2 X 5, though, which may not be what you want. My back-splash has both the subways and the 5X5 tiles and I am very happy with it.
