Paint update on my Family Room

I still have some painting to do, but I have enough done in the family room to show you guys. I went with Lenox Tan and it's perfect. I couldn't be happier with how the color looks with my tile.

I didn't notice how dusty the sewing machine was until I posted the pictures, but oh well. Now, to figure out where to go from here. Remember the sofas will be replaced with something neutral eventually. I'm not sure if I want to go with a monochromatic look with browns and off white or if I want to bring in another color.

You nailed it! That color is perfect. I don't know that I'd replace anything now....it all looks like it belongs together.

I have a family room with old furniture and white walls. It doesn't get much direct sunlight as I have a covered deck behind the room. I have painted the hallway a neutral beige color. I would like to flow nicely into the living room but want to make sure it's not too dark and looks good with light oak trim. Any suggestions for color would be greatly appreciated. I've considered a steel blue, very light green, and cream/beige. The carpet is also beige. Thanks! I posted a picture in the gallery.

We were going to replace the carpeting and tiles with new carpeting. I like the look of hardwood but it isn't as comfy and cozy to lay or sit on. I am a little worried with entrances to the deck and garage that the carpet will look dirty but I just hate the cold feeling of tile and the way it visually breaks up the room and it is slippery when wet. The door on the right of the picture is to the garage and the big doors on the left go to the deck (the one door swings open). I wasn't sure if the tv should go in the corner by the fireplace or on the long wall on the right (not sure about glare from the door). I love sectionals and would be willing to buy one for in there. We want this room to be a cozy room where family (there are 5 of us) and friends can gather and talk, watch tv and play games. There is a lot of traffic coming in from the garage on the right but we never use the door to the deck on the left (we have another set of doors to the deck in the kitchen that we use). We were considering doing stone around the fireplace from floor to ceiling with a barn beam style mantle to add to the cozy factor. We don't want anything too formal because we are laid back people, but we want it to look coordinated, updated and stylish. Right now it is just a hodge podge of stuff. We will relocate some of the playroom stuff to the basement, some to the kids bedrooms and some to the living room.

I like it. Is it cutting edge trendy? Not even close, but I like it. It's homey and comfortable. If it were mine, I wouldn't paint. If you paint, you're going to have to paint not only the shelves, but the lower half of the walls and the ceiling beams ... and in the process you'd lose so much warmth and character. If you feel you MUST do something, I'd do the fireplace in a white wash -- a dirty white wash that'd allow a bit of color to show through. You could test this: Tape up some white paper on the fireplace and live with it a while. I wonder how much of your dissatisfaction has to do with lighting. I see you have several lamps burning. What if you could do something along the lines of in-cabinet lighting -- you know, like they do in kitchens -- in the shelves. Or what if you bring in color in your furniture? Instead of painting the room itself, bring in a RED sofa ... or paint the (completely removeable) table and TV stand a bright color.

yep. You can liven up the area without sacrificing the depth & warmth of that rich knotty pine paneling; replacing the cool-color carpet with warm wood flooring will be more harmonious. Once that's done, live with it a little while, & then you might think about doing something to the fireplace-I usually think red brick is too massive & dense for any building other than a school, & definitely too much for the interior of a home, so I'd probably lighten it up. Then you might think about replacing the cool-color paint on the walls with a warm color that would tie the room together rather than driving it apart. (yes, you are correct: I am incapable of doing just one thing & leaving other things alone!). It's a lovely room, & I hope you have fun with it!

I guess I should have posted the "before" for those that didn't see it.

I really love the mirror. It looks even better in person. If y'all have any ideas on how to finish decorating my mantle, please let me know.

Okay, so I'm sitting here today trying to figure out where to go from here. I'm kind of combining this post with my other one on transferware. I'm having trouble commiting to a color for some reason, so I'm wondering what color you would accent with. I would like to use transferware or solid white/off white plate somewhere. I have this wall which is where the sewing machine is in the last picture.

I also like green as as accent, but I don't think I would use any transferware if I decided to use it.

So, what do you invision with brown walls....white, blue, red,green, or brown for a monochromatic look?

Have you decided what color your furniture will be? I know you said you were going to buy new furniture. Any of those would look good depending on what color your furniture and rug(if you are going to use one) are.

I think you need to go out and find a piece of decor, whether it be a picture or plates or even an area rug that you love, that would give you a jumping off point as to what color you should accent with. Any color will go with your wall color and the color of your future sofa as they are neutrals. I really like the last inspiration photo you posted above. It would be very easy to change out the colors in that room as all you need to do is change the pillows mostly.

I think your new mirror looks great above your fireplace and it seems like a good size for that space. I love your sofa selection : )

The Lenox Tan is warm and neutral and is beautiful in your home. If it were me, I would use that same color throughout.
It would look good with any transferware color as well as solid white or off white plates.

Transferware is pretty detailed. I think it looks best with skinnier furniture that has some exposed wood, as in your inspiration pics. The white has more impact and seems to hold it's own against modern overstuffed upholstery.

That said, I'd like the t-ware best in the kitchen.
You could go wild with color and add in Majolica, Quimper or whatever else struck you fancy. I can't seem to link directly to the picture I want to show, but if you click through to page 5 you'll see a knockout wall of plates.

I have two things to say...

first of all, I love the new color. It's so warm and inviting, and the whole room feels "richer" now. Perfect color choice!

Second, I adore the first inspiration picture you posted. That living room is to-die-for! Thank you for posting it, because I saved it for my own inspiration :)

By the way, decorative plates on the wall is something that is definitely not my style... but the pictures you found are just beautiful. I love the last one, and the cream colored room with the blue and white plates. Very pretty!

Laurie - I'm painting the family room, dining room, and kitchen in the LT since it's an open floorplan. I just didn't want to show you the painted kitchen yet, because that side of the house is a mess right now :)

I found this picture that I like for the kitchen. I gravitate towards the dark frames and pictures and I'm not sure if that's okay or if I should be looking for lighter colors to go with my wall color. I found it at LampsPlus and it says the inside dimensions are 16 x 12. I talked to someone from there to ask if that was the size of the print or if the frame was included in that, but he said he didn't have any other information on it. How would you take that?
