Suggestion for pretty, inexpensive white porcelain or bone china

This is maybe OT (I just posted the same topic over on Cookware) but I am looking for a new set of white china or porcelain dishes. My sister has a beautiful new pattern by Gien (she just got married) and I love the way these dishes look on the table and present the food but Gien is very expensive. I don't want or need to spend a fortune as this will be about my 6th (!) set of everyday dishes (and knowing me, certainly not my last). Any suggestions for a pretty, inexpensive set from other TKO GW lurkers? My sister's dishes have a simple embossed geometric pattern around the edges and I'm looking for something similar.

I would first start looking at places like TJ Maxx or Tuesday Morning to see what you can dig up. They sometimes have amazing deals and great products. It's the luck of the hunt there ... but that's half the fun!

Ikea or Target. Buy lots and lots, because the pattern won't be available forever the way it is for good china.

They are all over the place....try World Market, Try Mikasa, Try TJ Maxx... You will find the traditional shapes, coupe shape ands quare plates...I even saw af ew trianglular plates at TJ Maxx....would be nice as an accent serving piece. Linda c

robin, Thanks for letting me know the floors are oak laminate. It amazes me that I keep liking oak floors when I too had been dead set against oak floors due to not liking my veneer oak cabinets that came with my townhouse and this cheap oak engineered wood floors in the foyers that have very thick coarse grain in them that is very busy. Maybe I would even be open to an engineered oak floor that is not too grainy that is stained cherry. I also am still open to laminate but due to my cherry furniture in my office, I had my heart set on a cherry wood floor with tiled foyers. I just wish my foyers were bigger but I live in North Jersey and as single person needing a lot of square footage to have a big home office as well as lots of personal space, the stylish townhouse fit me better. If I sold my townhouse and moved south, I could get a really nice house with a big beautiful foyer but I am realizing being alone, I am not yet ready to move with my clients here an my clients are so nice. The location I live in is expensive and I chose this townhouse over the house with more land and more bedrooms that was the same price due to the location not appealing to me. Thanks also Robin for letting me know the paint color. It truly is very neutral and may be nice in my home office to warm up the walls. I will try a sample out when I am ready to repaint. I love all my window treatments in my home I chose except for my first choice that is in the home office. I dislike the long strings of my Alta (a division of Hunter Douglas) double honeycomb blinds since they are always messy and tangling. I dislike the neutral color I chose (an off-white with a taupe faint design in it that looks great in the day time) at night since the blinds then appear gray. I wish I went with the 3/4" size pleat rather than the 1/2" size pleat. But I did not make these mistakes again and I learned that it is worth paying a little more for retractable cords or continuous loop cords or going cordless if you are tall (I am not). When you are ready for blinds, let me know and I will take pics of my other window treatments that I love especially my Champaign colored Shangri-La sheer horizontal blinds in my family room that has a cathedral ceiling and a wall of windows. The blinds really make the room so bright and happy and goes so well with the Bone White walls and bright white trim. Everyone who sees them loves them. I also love my retractable corded top-down bottom up Architella black-out Duet blinds in the linen color in my bedroom softened up with crinkled soft white sheers around them.

Even thin lights may show when you are sitting and look into the kitchen. It seems most new kitchen installs are done with a light rail added to hide the lights behind. We did an update several years ago and kept our old cabinets which had no light rail or moulding below the boxes. DH is rather handy and we bought some oak (our cabinets are oak) corner moulding about 3/4 or an inch wide. I got stain matched up at a good paint store. Cloverdale I believe and they can make stain to match if you bring in a door from your cabinets. We installed that below the cabinets and I stained and varnished the. They gave a little update to the cabinet look and do a great job of hiding our UCL's. They look like they were always on the cabinets and match perfectly. He also installed our UCL and drilled small holes in the bottom of the cabinet, fished the wire thru them and then behind, thru the wall studs up to a soffit where we have access. Wired in an on and off and dimmer switch in our Zephyr fan hood since it has lots of room in the metal body. Virtually no wire showing and the light switch is with the fan light switch. DH is so innovative!

I have a beige set which I dress up seasonally with the same principle. I have a couple of options for salad bowls both formal and informal. Also serving bowls that match the plain colored plates but have a pattern with some seasonal colors to it. I have springy patterns and fall and winter type ones. Plain crystal is also a good match for everything that you want to glam up and this can be mixed with the less expensive pressed glass. Also linens, which is what I love, can be mixed and matched to give many looks. Silver and other grey metallic finishes would look great with your set too. You can pick up a lot of cute relatively inexpensive accent dishes at Goodwill and antique places. We've had some recent threads on "tablescaping" and the chief limiting factors are your imagination, taste and storage capacity!

String second on Tuesday Morning (also Ross, TJ Maxx, and Burlington coat factory). The trick with places like these is that you have to get all that you want/think you'll need right then.

OTOH, I got a set of really nice, basic, white bone china from Tuesday Morning and I've since found the same set online although a bit more expensive.

The set I got is Red Vanilla's Pure Vanilla line. It holds up well to daily use and has that wonderful bone china look and feel. I'm tempted to get more.

I have White Pearl bone china from Crate & Barrel. It is made by Nikko who makes many patterns of lovely white bone china. I think the pricing is in between every day china and fine china. We use it every day, in the dishwasher. Have had it for about a year and really love it. It's open stock and you can add more later.

I have Mayfair & Jackson white bone china which I use everyday. It's beautiful and goes in the diswasher with no problems. It also looks great for formal dinners.

I purchased Pure Vanilla (56 piece set with all the accessories) at HPC. They offer some good deals and have all of the Pure Vanilla accessories. Tuesday Morning and Home Goods hardly have any stock, just bits and pieces.

Hi there,

I just bought a very complete 'set' of dishes from Crate and Barrel in the Aspen pattern. It's quite simple but I think its very elegant.

14 dinner plates, 10 salad plates, 8 low bowls, 8 cereal/ice cream bowls and 4 serving bowls came out to about $225 or so. I know its a an uneven set but we use our plates more than salad plates and so I expect more eventual breakage. Also I prefer the cereal/ice cream bowl shape and DH likes the low bowls so we split the difference.

One thing is that Aspen is a very popular set and they have a tough time keeping it in stock. I'm still waiting for 10 of my dinner plates and 4 of my cereal bowls to come in.

Bryan China sells some of their restaurant dinnerware patterns by the individual piece. It's the real thing.

Pottery Barn carries what they call Caterer's Packs. They are sets of 12 dinner plates and salad plates. Plain, white, and sturdy, but nice. No bowls, however. I'm thinking about getting them for my everyday ware and just getting an eclectic collection of bowls for soup and cereal. World Market (aka Cost Plus, I think) also has a fair selection of dinnerware and may be where I go bowl hunting.

Check overstock.com. They may have all sorts of stuff and you can really save on the shipping.
