Teach Me About Greens!
Comments (20)My landlady taught me. You buy collards which have a thick stalk on the bottom. Cut off that thick stalk and plant it (in the same direction it was when you bought it, bottom down in your pot or garden) in some cow manure or MiracleGro. Keep watered. Watch the leaves grow. The more you pick the leaves, the more they grow. I grow kale also, but we bought the plants from Home Depot. Did not try to grow from seeds yet. Here is how I cook collards and kale. My African American neighbor laughs at me, but this is very tasty. First I boil down the greens until they get soft. Then I drain them, put some olive oil in a frying pan, gently cook some garlic, parsley, onion, a little hot pepper if you want, we grow wild tomatoes, so those are always in the mix, maybe also some cooked beets or green beans, then I add the kale or collards and heat thoroughly. YUMMY and super-healthy. You can also top a microwaved sweet potato with this cooked mixture. I'm a vegetarian, so for me, this is the entree, but you can use it as a side dish. You can also grow collards from seeds, but HEY, that takes forever. The "stalk" method is 100% better. I eat greens every day. They are high in calcium. A lot of women need extra calcium. Comments (10)Ours cost around $1800 for a 3800 sq.ft. home with 6 outlets and 2 vacpans. The vacpans are the things you refer to when you say a spot under the cabinet to sweep dirt into. We asked for them in this new build because we didn't have them in our old house. I love them, by the way. We have a HP Vacuflo which I highly recommend. Our other house had a Nutone which was not nearly as efficient as the Vacuflo and also had extremely heavy hoses. The Vacuflo hose is extremely lightweight and the vacuum head itself is extremely good. It also has great suction. Personally, I would never want to live in a house with a standard vacuum cleaner again. The pros of a central vac systems (IMHO) are: lightweight, much easier to get into tight areas, can move around a large area with ease, less noisy since central unit is located in either garage or basement, no need to buy vac bags or deal with the smelly sock odor of vacuums, and you don't have to empty the canister more than 3 times/year....See MoreTeach me about Aldi's please
Comments (18)i shop at several different ones if i am in those areas. as for the "deception" with their items being boxed to look like others, that's what everyone does. heck, just peruse the dollar store aisles - scrubbing bubbles is one that comes to mind. in any event, every item that is in the aldi stores is tested by a group of employees/tasters, etc. i purchase what i am comfortable purchasing. other items i'll get at other stores. i have the luxury of so many different grocery stores within a short drive of me that i can spread my shopping out and get the most for my buck. i was not aware of the refund policy but we haven't complained about anything yet. i don't care for the brand of milk they buy, so i never get it there. at christmas they had those ferraro roche candies for some ridiculously low price, i didn't realize it was just a one time thing. in the stores the prices are crazy. i also purchased this most delicious chocolate cake and when i went back, realized the freezer stated "special purchase". had i known, i would have stocked my freezer, it was incredible. i've been in three different aldi's in three completely different areas and each was well stocked and well kept. if i don't have a quarter, i carry one of those pretend things that slid in the cart. i have no problem returning a cart to where it belongs, sure beats having to fight for a parking space when people just leave them wherever. as for bags, i have been carrying my own bags for all kinds of shopping for the last 25 years, so it doesn't phase me. maryanne...See MoreTalk about style mix
Comments (36)nsm: I agree it seems close attention was paid to trends and what they thought people might expect. Nothing is truly terrible but there are small misses --- sort of like how the kitchen counter is just a bit too intense for the BS and accent wall. I too think the stacked tile has peaked. Is the sign of "jumping the shark" is when HD/Lowes puts it on clearance and phases it out of the inventory? I don't think they were trying to cut corners by using leftovers here -- anyone wanting to market a house for $5M is usually trying to buy hat looks like high end finishes That stone bathroom in the other house, though, is the example of what happens with too many types of stone. kswl: too funny regarding the movie set/actual house....See Morebungalow_house
