Anyone do sheet glass backsplash?

I have a very busy granite (fusion) and don't want the backsplash to compete. I'm thinking about two options and would love opinions:

First is to paint the backsplash and then just install sheet glass on top of it. Simple but would look finished.

Second is to use mirror. I've seen it done once and it really made the kitchen seem bigger, plus it would reflect some of the granite.

Thoughts or ideas?

I haven't installed it yet, but we're looking at painting a piece of glass to mount just above the cooktop. The painted side would attach to the wall.

We experimented on a piece of broken glass to check out the effect. We didn't even prime the glass, just painted with whatever paint we had on hand. Turned out great! If we scraped hard it would come off, otherwise is had adhered well. Painting the wall and putting a piece of glass over it gives in an much more inferior look IMO.

Agree with aloha that back painted glass looks great. You may want tempered glass which is pricey. And consider also the cost of cutouts for outlets, etc - good time to cross over to plugmold and sink mounted button for disposal.

Not too keen on the mirrors. Headless torsos are not a good look...

Whoever came up with the idea of replacing the sturdy glued and back mounted mesh on glass mosaic tiles with flimsy plastic or paper on the front that lets them fall all over the place and pulls them off the wall when you peel it, is an absolute !@$#! moron. How in the world did this become a trend for glass mosaic?

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

There aren't many recent posts on these. Does anyone have experience (good or bad) with glass sheet backsplashes such as manufactured by GlassKote or US Color Glass? All I've been able to find is that in the past estimates come in lower for US Color Glass than GlassKote. If anyone has either are you happy with them as the years pass? Have you had to replace any sheets due to cracking caused by heat? Thanks for any ideas.

I don't know what your client has in mind completely. It might be worth asking the client for some inspiration pictures for what she has in mind. I think some glass mosaics might be overpowering for that granite. But there are some glass mosaics that might work as long as they are very plain. Super white glass tile Maybe something like this with a tiny bit of pattern: Silver planks glass tile Or maybe this one which might work with the colour in the counter: glass mosaic - raw silk

I really wanted to do back painted glass - but am not a DIY. I couldn't get the glass to talk to my kitchen as hard as I tried. Then there was the cost...

I was just in a kitchen with mirrors - and the owner hates them - I found them to be a bit eerie... as celtic said - headless torso syndrome...

EAM posted this a few days back. Looks like it might be very interesting and comes in several colors. (Hi EAM! I'm paying attention. :)

Comes in 5 3/4" x 35 1/4" sheets and 11 11/16" x 35 1/4" sheets. Have no idea the price... but probably spendy.

I did a solid sheet of glass as a backsplash and I love it. It's clean, crisp look for my contemporary kitchen with Kashmir White granite. I've now forgotten the details of the install, but I know the contractor had to be very careful about the sheetrock behind the glass, i.e., it had to be REALLY smooth, near perfect. The paint also had to be just right.

On the day they did the backspalsh, I remember thinking, "Wow--I'm never going to stop loving this." Even the contractor was pretty proud of how it turned out.

One of the longtime members here -- mindstorm -- has an elegant tempered sheet glass backsplash. Hers was one of the first. The link is below. It's a fabulous look.

Our DD has one in her kitchen (installed by PO) but the glass was not done with the right glass and the first time they turned the hood lights on it cracked from the heat. So watch it if you have halogen in the hood.

One 'Kitchen of the year'....House Beautiful(???)featured this painted glass backsplash in a traditional kitchen.

There are several companies that do this or you can DIY -
Starphire glass is recommended as the truest color - much less green!

I see this and I just ogle! But happy with my decision!!
