Kitchen paint & countertop selection

I'm totally lost with picking the color of my kitchen walls and countertops. Here are the colors in the room so far:

Wood trim: original stain

Flooring: soon-to-be-refinished pine hardwood, plus an area of yet-to-be-determined tiling in front of the cabinets

Cabinets: maple with a cranberry stain

The red cabinets don't seem to go with anything when I play around on virtual design sites. I looked at cabinet websites to see what colors the designers use with red stained cabinets, but the walls just seem to be some ambiguous neutral that I can't name, and the countertops are nearly always black, which I don't like with my stained wood trim.

Lately, I've been considering gingerbread browns for the walls, but I'm still having a hard time finding a countertop color to go with it. My countertops will be laminate.

Any suggestions?

What style is the house? You want the colors to be true to the architectural heritage.

What to you mean by "original stain" on the wood trim. What kind of wood is it? What stain?

Pine hardwood floors sound beautiful. Are they going to be stained or just protected with clear coat.

The Red stain maple cabinets with the pine floor sounda like you want a Country motif? Modern? You don't like Black but what about a Graphite?

Hi dilly dally,
I'll answer the best I can and I'll also post a link to some photos. I'm not sure I have all the answers because this is my first home and I'm still learning a lot. :)
-Colonial built in 1900
-There's a picture of the moulding in the photobucket album
-The pine is covered in linoleum glue, but we've been told it can be saved. It appears to be a warm yellowish when it's clean. I never considered staining it, but would be open to the idea if it made my colors work together better.
-I definitely don't like modern decor. I chose this house because I love all the charming little details, like mullion windows and pocket doors. I don't want my house to look entirely antiquated, though, and hope to blend old and new while maintaining the charm.

maxiepines, I didn't follow your thread about cook tops so maybe someone already mentioned this. A downdraft set within a gas cook top pulls at the flames. This isn't an issue with your old electric cook top - no flame. I have a pop-up downdraft for my island's gas cook top. Even though it rises 7" above the cook top, it pulls the flame when turned on high and even on medium, it pulls on the back burners' flames more than I'd like. The downdraft blew out (would that be sucked out?) a burner when it was on low a few times. Today's gas cook tops generally come with automatic re-ignition, which is good, because the only way I know this has happened with my old cook top is when I smell gas. Anyhoo, a downdraft set at the same level as the burners will do this even more than my 7" pop-up does. Can you add a pop-up downdraft, preferably one of the newer models that rises more than 7" above the cook top instead? Stunning photos, as usual, boxerpups. You rock!

orPaint the trim around the door a nice crisp white (use a semi gloss enamel like BM Advance.) Paint the window and trim in the same white. paint your door black or Iron Ore. remove that valance. Replace the cabinet hardware to a matte black or a brushed nickel. try Pale oak on the walls, and two of these others for the trim/door color or for under the window you could do a built in bench against that wall (see pic,,,ignore the L shape. you would just do the single bench against the wall) and find a rectangle table to push up next to the bench. add two chairs for the other side

Wow the black and soft white w the Taj is going to look amaaaazinggg!! I use black as accents in the kitchen as my center island is a deep Tuscany green and cabs are White Duck. I racked my brains for months looking for backsplash and then I remembered in one of my bathrooms I used this oyster color very elongated subway tile with a soft wave. Went out to my storage to get a few pieces and laid it on there and it was perfect. It was this very soft and neutral greige color. If he’ll go back through my old post you should see pictures of my cabinets Taj Mahal and backsplash as I just cannot remember at this time. after the fact I wish I would’ve brought the Taj all the way up the wall but I’m glad now how it all turned out. Here's a list of kitchens that have dark colored cabinets. You might want to look through it and see what colors they used on the walls and countertops.
