Trying to do a beach/cape codish style for kids bath...need help.

Hey! This is the last little bit of decorating decision making I need to go through to complete this remodel...the tile is matte white + aquamarine glass tile (anyone know where I can find more??? my tile guy wants to finish tomorrow and we underestimated how much...my supplier is sold out! It's Rialto glass tile..having a hard time finding it!)

The bathroom will be for my girls..no windows in either room..first room will have just single vanity and toilet...pocket door leads to the tub area...I've used a tile for the floor that will resemble a sandy color...

1. Should I paint both rooms the same color?

2. Should I paint the tub room a blue that goes with the tile? SW Swimming seems to match well...or another color?

There are 9 foot ceilings in both rooms but 50% of the room is imposed on by a sloped ceiling so the 9 foot section is very narrow...the total space is 6'x11'....any tips on colors to do with this space??

Hope you find your tiles!

What about just white? And then do lots of fun accessories in the blue like the glass tile and maybe one other colour.

That way, you've got a neutral pallette if they turn out to be decorators like you and want to do it all again in a few years. LOL!

With no windows, white would also be nice and bright for when they're at the stage of spending hours in front of their mirror doing their hair and makeup.

Oops - submitted too soon. If you go white, you could do bright coloured beach towels for every day. Add treasured shells and rocks in jars, etc, etc.

Maybe a teak bath mat or other natural looking choice.

It could be really colourful now and then you can tone it down as they get older (I can't remember how old your girls are) and go with more of a spa feel.

palimpsest, thank you so much for reminding me that big is not necessarily better. I moved the fridge to the other side of the kitchen post, and the layout suddenly seems more flexible (please see below). However, husband thinks having a bulky fridge standing right next to the hallway may not be a good idea... zone4newby, the powder room does look awkward. The one in the original plan looks better, so I changed back to it. In fact, the whole left side of the front entry is now the same as the original plan. :) lavender_lass, I really appreciate your thoughts and the inspiration photos. I am going to check out the photos carefully and see what I can incorporate into our plan. I too love having a farm table in the middle of an L-shaped kitchen. I had a similar setup in my last rental, although that table was mainly used for spice plants, flower pots and things like that. I moved the washer/dryer back upstairs. :) Husband voiced his opinion last night...he prefers to have the laundry closer to the bedrooms than the kitchen. We will just put in a second set of washer/dryer later in the master suite, like what you suggested earlier. I also reconfigured the closet upstairs, so the master bedroom (upstairs) is a bit more spacious now (please see below). Renovator, thank you for warning us about the exposed timbers. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Husband had the same concern, so we took a trip to the builder's state to have a tour of 3 full timber-frame houses, and 1 hybrid house (pre-fab panels with some timber elements). One of the full timber-frame houses was indeed quite dark inside, but I think it was done that way on purpose as the owner wanted it to feel like a barn. The other houses all looked great. We especially liked the hybrid one, which is a 2400 sqft American Bungalow (including the walkout basement). During that trip, we also found out that a custom full timber-frame house is not financially feasible for us. So a hybrid house kind of hits our sweet spot. The cape we are considering is a hybrid. Here is what we have so far. The office stays large due to the location of the timber post in the kitchen. The door for the walk-in closet upstairs should be okay, in terms of the ceiling height clearance, as the original plan has it configured that way too. I'm doing two kitchens at this point...one at a very low budget (reusing the cabinets and finding some additional in the other rooms of the house to add to those) and one that's lavish by any standards, but as plllog says, it's my dream kitchen and I want what I want. I enjoy BOTH challenges. No matter how high the budget, the decisions are just as difficult. And some of my favorite pieces in the kitchen are actually the ones I really got a steal on (for instance the 1930's chandeliers which I purchased on ebay and refinished myself). I enjoy that kind of challenge. But the fun in both of these kitchens is that given a few restrictions (size, budget, etc) I still can be pretty darned creative because neither house is restricting in style. So in one I'll have my chicken mosaic and in the other, heck I've always thought mahogany cabinets were a splurge, but that's what I get to start with :) Now back to the important part of this post...the speakers! Mine are all wrapped around the "wood like substance frame" (which sticks out of the wall about four inches) with wallpaper to match the decor of the room. This includes large pink and green flowers, gold flocked foil and some beige and gold foil spinx's (I think that's what they are). This place was the HEIGHT of style when it was built :) And dang it makes me giggle! I'm sure the same will be said of my bathroom when I leave...."WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS????? SHE USED CROCODILE TILE IN CHOCOLATE BROWN!!! 24x24!!!! THEY"RE HUGEEEEEE!!!!!" And while I live with them I'll love them LOL To each their own :)

Hi freedee: We also love Tremontano, but they only take cash!! We are debit card people for food items, so that store is a problem. Have you ever tried getting cash on the island? Not a good idea! They do make nice sandwiches, though. We also LOVE Oakies Meat Market in Surf City for great steaks and burgers, but get there early as it gets very crowded. Last summer we tried Taste of Italy in SC and liked their cold cuts and salads alot. gail618: I got those prices quoted from a local locksmith in the shore area. I got quotes from 3 different local locksmits and they were all in the same price range. I think the programmable lock was a Schlage (sp?). One of the locksmits told me he has it on his house and loves it. Interestingly, I asked him what people who strictly rent out their houses do about the key problem. He told me he is actually on retainer with several homeowners to go every week/weeks/month during the summer and change the pins on all of the door locks to insure past renters no longer have working keys to the houses!!! I can only imagine how that cost must add up! The locksmith told me that you have a master program (say 1234) and they you add a temporary bypass code to allow the renter or guest into the house (say 2233). After 2 weeks (or whatever you program into the lock), the code reverts back to the master code (1234). He said there are even locks you can reprogram from your cell phone without being there in person. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

As GG48 suggested, wait until early fall to plant, and use an automatic timer with soaker hoses to water during the week. It is difficult enough to get plants established in high summer when you are there, but hoping that a couple of kids will know how often and how much to water is unlikely to be successful. Plants are living things, and without proper care when they are getting established, you won’t be happy with the results and it will be wasted money and effort. Do all the hardscaping such as the walkway, perhaps the driveway, and any painting, roofing or whatever before planting so that new plantings aren’t damaged by excessive foot traffic, machinery and other disturbance that comes with construction. Typically the area effected by construction is rather larger than the final footprint, so for instance adding a front walk may involve digging or workmen walking where you want plants to be eventually. Also, knowing where the drive will be exactly will be important in planning placement of trees and the walkway as well as how deep the entry gardens should be. So be patient and bide your time with planting. I lived in my current house for three years before I could put in foundation plantings while we dealt with 50+ years of deferred maintenance, so you can likely be patient for a few months. If you totally can’t live with the house bare of plants for this season, get a couple of really large planters (1/2 whiskey barrel or larger), fill with potting medium that is fast draining but moisture retentive, and plant flowers such as old fashioned geraniums that can tolerate getting dry for a few days at a a time. Water the heck out of them before leaving at the end of the weekend, and then if needed pay a kid to pour a couple of gallon jugs on each pot during the week. If they die you aren’t out a lot of $$ and you can tuck the pots away until next season. If they are in the way of construction, they can be easily moved. Beverly’s and Deco’s photos are lovely, but not practical for a second home unless you want to pay for plant care. I second the comment that you want easy care plants, not ones that need deadheading and regular watering such as roses and Annabelle or blue hydrangeas. If you want those, you need to hire someone to do regular garden maintenance since nothing advertises that a house is unoccupied for a chunk of each week quite so much as plants drooping from lack of water (the hydrangeas) or needing deadheading of faded flowers (the roses). If you want hydrangeas, especially if this is an area with at least a half day of sun, consider using panicled hydrangeas such as Little Lime or Bobo or Little Quickfire, all of which shouldn’t exceed 5’ and will be happy with far less water than smooth hydrangeas like Annabelle or big leafed hydrangeas like Endless Summer. They will bloom white and then shade to some color of pink as the season progresses. Mine bloom for 3-4 months, depending on variety. To get helpful plant suggestions, you need to share more info. Is this house on the ocean with its tempering influence or is this a beach house on a lake or river? Is the soil sandy or clay or nice loam or ? How much sun does this proposed garden area get?

The girls are 8 & 9 right now...we love spending time at the beach down on the gulf coast and have several items we have from our visits (fun carved pelican on posts, vibrantly colored fish in deep pastels etc.) I love white bathrooms, my only concern is that this bathroom will get lots of traffic (kids abound at our home...we usually have 4-6 other kids in addition to ours around a lot) and it'd be hard keeping a white wall white...I thought about even tiling up to the half wall or doing a bead board up to half the wall or more so I could paint that a gloss that will clean really well...then do a light pale blue on the top part....so many decisions!!

I like the bead board idea - gloss - maybe the color of sand or a very pale peachy sandy color. A sea bluish green on top - color of water. Add some sparkles to the paint for reflection like the ocean. Use some of the pastels in the fish for inspiration. It will be fun!
Another idea is a white, weathered look on the bead board, like an old building at the beach.

I did a Cape Cod bathroom for my kids bath and had a similar color palette. My wall tiles are white, my floor tiles are blue and I painted my walls Behr Newport Blue. I added beach pictures (That I bought in Cape Cod) on the wall and added light green towels and a bath mat from Pottery Barn. I only have 1 picture as the bathroom is tiny, less than 5x7. When you walk in, the toilet is on the right, the sink is on the left and the bathtub directly in front of you.

I would paint the walls a light blue or light green and tie it in all together with accessories.

I LOVE your floor tiles!!! I am on such a tight budget that I only had selection from a tile graveyard...no fun blues in there! :) But, I found a large 18 inch tile that was sandy colored...with the sloped walls I thought it would be nice to do the wainscoting...just need to see if I can manage that on my budget! :) Thanks for the ideas...I love your blue wall and pictures...and your shower curtain!!! It looks so cheery!!! :)

Keep any ideas coming, I'm bankrupt with ideas at this point!

If you are unable to find more of the glass tile... just skip it here & there. Cut down more of the white to go in the "holes". Make it look like it was planned to be this way. Maybe do the top few rows as all white... or place the glass tiles more randomly on the end and faucet walls. This will also help your budget!

I was going to recommend beadboard too. When we did the girl's bathroom upstairs, it is built in a dormer with a sloping ceiling and low walls in areas .. so we painted the ceiling a color and did white beadboard on the walls. We painted the beadboard a semigloss and it's been a breeze to keep up with. If anything I think it has protected the wall from smudgy hands. :)

zipdee! Wow! Love the look! Did you just transform a dresser for your sink?? I'm trying to decide on what to do for a vanity and can't find anything that works with this room...thought I'd go look at antique stores for some more ideas...what type of paint did you use to get that blue?

Yep, found no more of the tiles!! UGH! So we decided just to do the glass tiles on the main wall of the tub and on the two side walls we are just using the 6 inch white ones in a pattern...I think it'll work...I'm going to have to try and find some cheap bead board! It's just so much cutting and hanging that I hate! :)

I wished I'd put a skylight in the bath...but it wasn't at the right roof pitch..love your floors as well..think I'll do that in my son's room....love the ideas!!

Beadboard would look great!

I don't find white hard to keep clean. If you use the right paint, it's fairly easy to give it a quick wipe down. I find the dirt easier to spot so I catch marks right away.

With darker paints one day I just wake up and go - eek, that wall is dirty!! Lol!

JYYanks -- I LOVE your tiles too. Please share the brand and where you purchased them. They are really unique and lovely!!

lmhall2000, thanks for the kind comments. :) We found a really good deal on an antique dresser off craigslist and then converted it to a vanity for the girls. We then painted it that blue color and changed out the hardware to glass knobs ( not shown in the picture ). The blue on their vanity, which I call 'smurf in a can' was the result of color matching a metal desk lamp they have in their main room. The tile on their floor is an octagon and dot pattern that we found very reasonably at Home Depot. I would have loved to go with a hexagon pattern, but this was about 1/6 th of the price and gave close to the same look.

I absolutely love the glass tiles you picked out, I can't wait to see their completed bathroom! It's going to be adorable! :)

I'm so sorry it took me so long too respond but I haven't been feeling well these last couple of days.

The shower curtain is from Pottery Barn Teen and the tiles were from Lowes. They were actually stock tiles, I didn't have to special order them and they were inexpensive. Here's a link to the tiles on lowes.com. They really look very nice in person.
