Granite and back splash help, PLEASE.

I am new to this forum and have been lurking in the background but really need help. I don't have a designer eye, so would love your insight. We just ordered cabinets for a kitchen remodel, and now stuck trying to decide on granite, etc.

Cabinets are being custom built; however, will be very close to Omega Dynasty Danville door style in cherry with nutmeg stain and coffee glaze. The island will be black - either stained or painted - depending on how dark he can get the stain. Just not sure which would look best.

Floor is currently red birch, but may change out to natural hickory. Walls are light chocolate mocha, and I have white plantation shutters throughout the house, including the kitchen and eat in area. Appliances will be stainless steel.

I would love suggestions for granite and back splash.

It sounds like the perfect backdrop for bianco antico granite, a very,very popular choice on this forum. Do a search and read tons about it. It would be helpful to know whether you want a stone with lots of movement, or something quieter. With bianco antico, you need a quiet backsplash, like the classic cream subway tile Sloneby used in her white kitchen below.

We used Kashmir Gold with our dark-ish cabinets and medium floors (which are more medium than they look here:

A better look at the surface, but before the kitchen had a new floor - and a few other things :)

Backsplash: this is really personal. We used a travertine, but that is definately an "out" choice around here. Various kinds of subways are ever popular choices, also squares set on point, and some still like various sorts of glass, or even the same granite as your counter or a piece of stainless steel. Some go with just paint, which also works. There are many threads on that subject, but this one is fairly recent and makes many good points to consider. Mostly I'd recommend deciding on a counter first, and then worry about the backsplash.

oh mayflowers forgot to say that I like the idea of adding cabinets to back of peninsula area but was also thinking of having two backless bar stools with black leather seats there as well. Will have to think about the wainscoating and now that I look closely the area could use an update and it is scuffed up. the more we look the more we see that needs help with this house Ugh thanks so much Here is the living room, my carpenter is fashioning a pine wood free floating mantle as we speak, it will have oil on it and natural tones. We have sofa facing the fireplace that's a thin cordoroy material in a light blue/green and plan to have an accent chair against the other wall (the staircase wall) with perhaps some type of server or china cabinet over there, dining area is too small for china cabinet but might be able to have a behind the sofa credenza (for more storage) we also plan to have an area rug in front of the sofa. I am looking for a gray one with texture if I can find one. what do you think of those ideas? Right now the dining area has a work table we're using till we find what we want lol

How accurate are those photos for actual color? Would it serve better to draw out that squash gold or the gray? (Personally, I think there's more than enough of the pinky yellow.) Or introduce an accent that matches the wood? What feeling does the owner prefer: warm colors? cool colors? Are there other colors or patterns in the room that need to be considered? Formal or informal? Budget? DIY or pro install? Access to vendors? Personal preferences for materials? Has she taken the Sweeby test? Definitely avoid small mosaic glass tiles unless they're a trim band no more than 3 inches tall and positioned at least 10 inches above the counter and are a good match with the countertop. srg215's monocolor solution has a lot of wisdom to it, and the tile size is big enough to provide a larger, regular counterpoint (pun intended) to the countertop's irregular pattern. It defuses it, although his/her granite has fewer color tones than this one. Definitely recommend living with this for a while and perhaps trying out some colors and textures via paint, fabrics, kitchen objects, maybe wallpaper or stencil. Tile backsplashes are generally expensive enough and permanent enough to set this owner up with a second reason for dissatisfaction if she rushes into things.

Could you post a photo showing the cabinets too? It may be tricky to get the right color tile that works with the white cabinets and the cream granite. In mark_rachel's photo, notice how the tile to the left is a pure white like your cabinets while the tile she's selecting is cream. You would have all of those white/cream tones to coordinate. It may be better to go with a darker taupe, light cocoa, or sandy color that picks up a color from the granite and that won't fight the white cabinets.

ref pic for idea for BS if yr cabinets are Bright White ref comment he tiles are from California Art Tile and they are 2 x 8. I don't have the exact color information but the cabinetry in this kitchen is bright white and the tile matches almost identically, so I would look for a bright tile with no cream or gray tones, just a solid white. I do not have the grout information either, as both the tile and grout were done through the homeowner, but our advice is always to get a sample chip of your cabinetry, your backsplash, and if you're able your countertop. Bring these to look at your grout colors and determine which one is best. You can always go to your kitchen designer or interior designer with questions but if you're doing it yourself this is the best way to make sure your colors will match up.

I initially decided on white delicatus but read that it chips easy because of all the mica/quartz. So then looked at bianco antico but it, too, appears to have issues with chipping. Any input on the issue of mica/quartz chipping out? I just don't want a lot of unsightly repairs which I understand can turn yellow down the road.

I also thought the white might wash out with the light flooring. No?

I originally thought I liked the pattern in white delicatus and bianco antico, but not opposed to some simply flowing movement either. I looked at some netuno bordeaux yesterday to see if it looked better than the 'whites,' but just can't decide. I was thinking black and white motif, but just started debating in my mind if brown hue would go better with the light floor. I do not like gold.

Have you brought some granite samples home to see how they look in your kitchen? It's amazing how much the light in your particular room affects the way a granite looks. If you have a sample door of your cabinets and/or a floor sample, that helps too.
