Show me your soffit. Need ideas. I can't get rid of my soffit

Well turns out that my soffit is actually a huge beam carrying my trusses. I was planning on removing them but now I cant. I am going with a very modern contemporary kitchen (Flat slab doors, long pull handles, darkish stain, stainless steel appliances, etc. But now I have to get this 80's looking soffit up to speed with my cabinets.

So show me how your soffits look, and let me know if you have any ideas or can point me in the right direction.

My soffits are roughly 18" deep so My cabinets will sit well under the soffit.

Find out what is underneath before you dig or remove existing shrubs or trees because they may have roots down around: water, gas, electrical, phone, or TV cable lines septic tanks or sewer pipes Plan ahead for possible uses of the green lawn so you still have enough straight space for bocce ball, croquet, etc. Our son reminds me every time I expand or make new beds that take away some of the lawn. Good tip to lay out outline with hose. I've also used pots empty or filled to visualize the height as I have to see it and can't envision it. Walk the area, sit in a chair in various spots, check the views, & over several days decide where the lines should be for garden, lawn, porch, etc. Since the street is on one side think about possible entry from kids on bikes, stray balls, & noise pollution from cars. Think about all the seasons & how your gardens will affect snow & leaf removal, lawn mowing, getting amendments to the garden, harvesting herbs, etc. Before I had paths & more garden beds in the front yard I didn't go in it unless I was mowing, playing a game with the kids, or pulling weeds. Now, I look out every day, walk it, & enjoy the space. Another factor is air quality - from street, or neighbors... Neither were a problem for 15 years until neighbors moved in who smoked on their porch & used burn barrels in front & back yard. Three adult drivers + their frequent guests driving on gravel drive that passes our house 1st, then cigarette smoke increased as they visited... Prevailing wind carried smoke across lawn to our home & even up over house & into the back yard. If any window open would suck it right into the house. Now I can go right outside without checking if the "smoke was clear", wearing a bandana, or carrying an inhaler. Something I took for granted -- clean air -- has returned because they moved away in January. I'm delighted we could scrap our plans to build a screen & hedge between us because I prefer the open space instead. I didn't think it would work very well anyway unless we planted more trees & our septic is in the middle of the lawn. Our only other option would be to move & I'm so glad they did instead!

Hi. Just an update on the fabric for my window treatments in the kitchen. I received a pretty nice size swatch of the Patna Paisley Spice as discussed in this thread with a picture attached above. Those who responded back felt that the pattern would work well in my kitchen. We hung the swatch in various locations and we do love the fabric and it definitely works well on the side of my kitchen with the window located near the back door but doesn't seem to work as well on the window above the sink due to placement near the cabinets. There doesn't seem to be enough contrast when put up against the cabinets - in fact the fabric seems to match the cabinets too much.. Please refresh your memory with the pics I posed above.. With that said, since we love the fabric so much, I was wondering if you thought I could add a separate solid fabric (possibly dark brown/bronze) to the Patna Paisley fabric to add some contrast. If you look closely at the picture posted of the fabric, you will see that there is a little bit of that color running through some of the paisleys now, but not near enough. Since we plan on making relaxed roman shades, I am wondering if there is a way to add some other fabric to our design. Maybe sew some solid brown fabric to the bottom of the shade where it curves? Or maybe there is some other area in the design that we could add the brown. What do you think? I just think we need a little more "pop" and I thought the brown might do it since there are many bronze accents in the room. Thanks to all for your responses.. The soffit that was in my kitchen contained nothing, and clearly was not original to the kitchen, so I suppose it was put in to "finish" the space above the uppers. I am with EAM44, I didn't like the way they looked in my kitchen with 8 ft. ceilings and confined space. (Of course, I didn't like the way any part of my kitchen looked!) I do have to pull out a step stool to reach the top shelves now but I like the storage and even more the look of the tall cabs. When I get to the age that a step stool is not a good idea, I will just empty the top shelves!

Boy, with no kids or grandkids, this is all I have to do today. LOL, thanks for the advice. I don't want to spend any money on cabinets since I'm selling in a year. I'm in the process right now of remodeling the bath, it has those 12x12 sticky tiles o the floor, so a ceramic tile floor is going in in the next few weeks. Oh, the bath has no tile on the walls, the former owner thought it much nicer when the cast iron tub "broke", she had all the time removed and a one piece bath/shower combo installed. I just hate it. Back to the kitchen, there is not enough cab space to even put food away, so on the other side of the fridge, I have one of those white storage cabinets that HD no longer carries. I just want the kitchen to appeal to buyers. I hope the green does, I love it and don't want to change it. I also thought about the larger trim and will look for a taller moulding for the tops. Anything that will make the 30" cabs look taller. The box light fixture will probably go also when I repaint the ceilings. Since that is the only bright light for the kitchen, what do any of you recommend for that light? Karen

Hey Jache. We had the exact same problem. Because our project is an addition we were faced with having the beam run RIGHT through the middle of the room. We have remedied the problem with columns, half walls etc. We aren't finished so I have no pictures BUT I can tell you the amount of time that I spend researching this was enormous. It sounds like your soffits are going to be above your cabinets. If so, you have some options.
Have you thought about taking your cabinets to the ceiling and having the beam run through the top shelf of the cabinets? You won't need the space anyway. I have a lot of pictures that I saved when I was doing my "research" if you want me to email them to you I can.
Some of the other things I thought about doing were creating a reversed tray ceiling effect. Lots of pictures of this as well.
You could also, depending on the height of your ceiling open up the soffit, expose the beam and then do matching faux beams all the way across your kitchen. That is what I wanted to do but I have 8.5 foot ceilings and my beam is 14 inches deep:(

Here's a pic of mine above the sink, which was the remnant of an '80s dropped ceiling also and turned out to have plumbing pipes lurking in it.

We rerouted pipes but couldn't get rid of them entirely. The cabinet at the far end had to be cut into at the back, and a box built from the back. I only lost about 4" x 4" of space at the very top of the cabinet, which you can't see without the door open and a strange desire to peer into the very top. HTH.

Style-wise, my kitchen won't be too much help for you...maybe look at a loft-type setup with exposed pipes? (noisy)

I could have sworn I saved a picture of a kitchen I saw on here once, but now I can't find it. It seems like they somehow made the soffit look like it was part of the cabinetry. I think they painted the soffit the same color as the cabinets and put some crown molding at the top. Does anyone else remember that kitchen? Of course, if you have stained cabinets, I'm not sure that would work.

I'll post a before and after remodel photos of our 1980 kitchen so you can see what a difference just a minimum of change can make.

Our soffit did have to be reduced in size slightly to accommodate the cabinet above the fridge.
