you'll want a rug at least 1'6" wider and longer on all sides of the table. So take the table dimensions, add 3 feet to the length and width, and find the next closest size.

for example, you said the table will be 5 feet (or 60") long seating 6 people, so figure length of the rug has to be at least 8'. the most standard rug size length after 8' is 9' (as in 6'x9'), but 6' is not going to be wide enough probably, so you may want to consider a square rug

Just be careful of heating vents in the floor, if you have them, you don't want to cover them up.

THANKS stinky. That's a big help. I'm thinking an 8x10 should do the job and that will allow a foot and a half of exposed wood all around.

I think as the previous poster suggested, a 6'X9' would work. 6' wide should be fine if your table is around 3' wide. I can't imagine the table being wider than that. I also think that size would work well in your room, giving you 2-2 1/2' open around the perimeter of the room. Anything larger might as well be wall to wall carpeting.

One more thing I'd like to add, tho. Are you sure you want an oval table? I have an oval dining table and really wish it was a rectangle. It's easier to squeeze one more at a rectangle and oval tablecloths are harder to find. Just my 2¢.

I had a 6'4" x 10' rug under my 42" x 5-8' oval dining table for 25 years, and it is NOT wide enough! Larger people, men, kids--all seem to pull the chair out farther than is necessary. Then they try to scoot it in and it catches on the rug. We recently bought an 8 x 10 and it's MUCH better!

I'm in the process of getting a 6 x 9 rug for under a round 42" d table that is used with an extender (to 54") to seat 6 people for large gatherings when my oval table (that only seats 8 even with 3 leaves because the legs get in the way), and rectangular table (that seats 10 with 3 leaves) aren't enough. The chairs will go off the rug with the 54" extender. When I play games with the kids at this table when it is the 42" d size, I have to angle them so they don't go off the rug--and these chairs are not large.

jimandanne - That's exactly why I think the 8x10 would work best. I don't want the chair legs to go off the rug.

I may consider an 80" long table but keep one leaf out most of the time except for larger gatherings. With an 8x10, it will work for the smaller size as well as with the leaf in.

Decision, decision!! Now I just need to find the right set. Thanks all.

A lot of dining room rugs are too small and you have the problem with the chair legs getting caught in the rug as Anne mentioned. A small rug looks uncomfortable and skimpy, and it's irritating to have to maneuver chairs on and off the rug. Go as large as you need to in order to avoid that.

After checking out sizes using a tape measure in the DR, an 8x10 would be practically wall-to-wall as bac mentioned. I need to get the furniture before I get the rug anyway, so the furniture will determine rug size. One thing I hate is when the legs get caught on a rug's edge.

I found chairs that I really like in my casual style, and priced well, especially being solid wood (no veneer), so I'm waiting on a wood sample from the company. Once I have that, I can find a table that works well with the chairs. Unfortunately, the matching table as shown in last pic of these chairs is just too small at 36x60 oval. I'd prefer one at least 42-44" wide and a little longer. I understandand because of the pedestal, the chairs can't be pushed in all the way. That would bother me, so here I am looking for another table.
