Well, it is hard to tell just from these pics, but the only thing that doesn't seem to work is the bright red (pillow and stool -- I'd use them in another room). Even your dog fits in!! How cute is he :))

Blue, black, brown, rust, some green and gray works fine together. Very pretty colors together. I might tone down the bright Robin's egg blue on the wall if that's a possibility. Definitely, if you have some other accessories in that color, like ceramic pieces, maybe, bring them into the room also -- maybe something on the coffee table. A piece of art with blue in it on the rust accent wall would be beautiful. If the space is broken up by a lot of openings, you could, say, paint the door the wall color to make it flow a bit more smoothly and feel more like a wall and less choppy.

I don't think your chairs have to be the same height, but you are the one there to see them firsthand and the eye of the beholder is you :) so maybe you just don't like that look.

I get most of my stuff at thrift shops too, and have very little decorating budget, and will have very little budget for many years to come.

Generally I exercise caution before increasing my commitment to any one colour in a room. I'm going to be living in my current home for many years... carpets, curtains, cushions, furniture will come and go in that time. Things will wear out, I'll find bargains, change will happen. If I'm stuck with a need to replace carpet or curtains or a major item of soft furnishings in a room, I'm better off with only one colour on the walls to consider. When my inlaws renovated a few rooms, I got carpet off them that they would have otherwise thrown away... our living room went from worn out tan carpet to fairly new grey carpet. Too much commitment to colours makes such "scores" more difficult to work in.

Paint the wall if you want to and feel it will look good, but factor the cost to the easy flexibility of your decor into your calculations of whether it is worth it to you.

I love your blue pillows with the Koi fish on them - those are the perfect inspiration for a really wonderful room. I congratulate you on picking those. And you also have some other really nice items to work with there.

I also agree with toning down the blue color to a more blue gray. Paint can be purchased inexpensively when it is on sale or when colors are mis-made they often discount those and will mix a color you want.

I could definitely see the muted orange in the pillow picked up on one of the walls or all of the walls and the ceiling painted a blue gray color. Not knowing what your ceilings are like or your decor style, I could see the blue gray ceiling color come down the wall about a foot and then start with the muted orange color - that would be striking.

I agree with squirrel, I don't think the red pillow, stool and perhaps the lamp will fit in. The lamp shade looks almost red on my monitor, but maybe it is a darker orange hard to tell. The red pillow and footstool can be recovered easily, for little cost with remnant fabrics.

I like both of the chairs you have and I don't think the two chairs have to be the same height either. they look uneven in the photo because the taller one is placed farther back than the other one. they could also be placed on different sides of the room and their varying heights wouldn't be as noticeable.

I try to get to garage sales very early and keep on eye out on Craig's list, there are great bargains for very little if you check regularly. I have gotten some really nice things at consignment shops too.

That blue is a little bright I agree and It's fine for that room but I was going to do a paler one for the living room when I repaint as it's that same color.

I was thinking yarmouth blue by BM as I have seen it on here in a bed room and it was lovely.

I don't have any doors just opening that you can see into the kitchen, hallway, and sunroom.

This is the sunroom at Easter thats why there is so many bunnies lol. I'm going to get rid of the rug and put new tile flooring down someday, blue/ gray state or whitish travertine looking porcelain tile, which ever looks better, we need tile as it holds up better with our pets.

on the other end of my living room is my kitchen painted in the same red as the little couch I was trying to Tie the rooms together but I guess I failed horribly :(

Should I look for a rust couch cover? rust that leans towards brown or OJ?

I really like my curtain finials, but the rod is a little thin and I was wondering if putting the shell finials with a bamboo rod might give it a little more weight?

What kind of table should I look for? wood? Brown or black ottoman in leather? I know they say for a small living room it adds more room to have furniture with legs so you can see more floor and I agree but seeing as the living room is so small something with storage is appealing. I have a marine trunk but I'm not sure it fits in as it's old looking?

I also love the pillows. I would use colors from those pillows. Be careful selecting orange paint. I decided a few years ago to paint my dining room (I wanted a Terracota look) and landed up with Home Depot orange. Yuck! Love the chairs! I just picked one up at a thrift store that looks similar to one of yours. Very retro. I love an eclectic look.
If you don't like the lamp base just paint it. Rustoleum has a great spray paint, that when applied it will look like hand hammered metal. Comes in several great colors and has a great look to it when it's finished. I've used it plenty of times and it's very durable.

I think I have that picture saved on my computer, it's a little on the modren side, but the wall color is very pretty and about the color I was thinking of useing.

The lamp shade is red. and I sort of like the jolt it adds, but I can see how other people could find it jarring, and I could recover the stools, I have two and they where not spendy so if they would go with the room better I would be willing to do that.

I found two chairs today just like those but the same height as my couch and big enough for taller people to sit in! and for cheep so here they are.
I look forword to redoing them!
The paint chips show up a lot brighter then they really are and I'm really thinking of useing the lighter one.

I have a tall black desk and found a mirror for $20 and the corbel things for $12 they are a little bigger and more fancy then I wanted but will they work with the mirror?

I like the floor tile, I think I could find them cheeper as I'm sure that it is real stone and it would look a lot like it and it seems to go good with the brown leather stools, which I would love, but my couch is that color of brown so I think that color of floors would be better then the gray/blue tile I would love to have don't you think?

I seen the koi ones at macy's, I fell in love, I love anything with goldfish on it. and seen they where on sale for $15! I never buy anything new and $30 seemed like a lot for pillows but I went for it, broke my heart that they where not the ones on sale when they ring up at $45 a pop.

I put them back, and told my husband my sad story about my koi pillows three months later he comes home with the pair!!

He had went over to his bosses house to do something for her and said how much I had admired them, she told him to take them she wanted something new anyway. is that a great story or what?

Great job with your inspiration pic and the mirror/corbels! That's an amazing find. The orange swatches you have on the wall will likely be too bright, imo. I think even in your inspiration pic (love that room!) the orange is more subtle.

The chairs and pillows are great, as are the curtains, but the red sofa cover ... I can't see that, myself! :) You might be able to get away with that spark of a red lamp. ? Maybe a lower watt, warm bulb would tone it down a bit, too.

When you look at the pic of the mirror above, the glass portion looks blue -- that's a beautiful shade with your oranges!! It's somewhat subdued and grayed -- a warm blue even just a touch on the teal side. That color also pics up the flavoring of the ottoman in your inspiration pic. The insp room, although bright and cheerful, does have a nice, subtle quality about it, very soothing actually, so be careful not to get everything too bright :) Notice, also, how the decorator diluted the effect of the bold orange with neutrals like white and beige-like colors.

It's a really warm tone isnt it? , I wish I could find out what color it is! I've been looking at orange paint chips and my eye balls are about to fall out :P

it's seems like a warm but really bright color to me, look it up on the link under showrooms if you have time and tell me what you think of it as thats a picture I took with my cam I posted. the picture in the magazine cottages and bungalows is not as bright and is in stores now.

So the paint chips I picked out are not right, I wanted something inbetween anyway, I could take the picture down and have them match it?, kinda of risky as they shine only a pin-point of light to match by but what do you think?

I understand what you mean about the blue, that does look nice :) but what are my oranges!!? the ones in the koi pillow? on the jug? the paint chips on the floor? the magazine? all of the above? or any orange?

Got any blue in mind that is about that color? gray blue would be hard for me to pick out!

The oranges are in your pillows, the rust of your curtains, I guess the rust chair cushion is changing, the orange in your brown wood, and, the inspiration pic! :)

Was just looking through the Zi showroom. Interesting site :) That is a completely different coloring than your phone camera, lol. Since they're using the color in their showroom, you can just send them an email or call to get the paint color. I'm sure they'd be happy to share any info.

Don't have any paint swatches in front of my right now for the blues (and my head is killing me at the moment :) What paint lines do you use?

I went to a fabric stone and came back with some possibilities, I was hoping to use the burnt OJ (VERY spendy! so I did not get much,) for the stools and maybe a pillow or two, the gray blue for the chairs, but I'm not married to it , and the brown acanthus leaf for the red couch, I have enough to do the two chairs with it if it would look better on them then the couch and keep looking for the couch. the brown leather pillow is the same color as my leather couch in my living room.
