Thanks guys :) Terriks: thanks for showing me how to do that! I was going to ask about that.. I'll try it next time frazoo .. funny you should mention getting one recliner & one chair with ottoman. This is something I am considering. The Swivel base for T.V. Brilliant! I don't know how I didn't consider this before. I will have to check around because the t.v. is huge.. like 50 inches. It's not a flat screen - it's like a dlp? that is a really good idea though. annz.. I like the rug but it has several burn holes in it. (they are pretty hard to see though unless you look for them) from fireplace sparks. LOL about your dh never sitting in a chair with one arm .. I am going to get him a new recliner (I've decided) It seems the consensus to just keep my sectional so I am going to! I'm going to keep the arrangement I have & just keep my sectional for now. I've certainly been known to comment on an old thread revival - but this was mainly during a phase when numerous people, not regulars if I remember rightly, kept bringing up old threads apparently without realising they were old, and answering the OPs questions as if it they were still current 10 or more years later. I think this may have been happening a lot because for a while Houzz was putting random undated pictures and posts in the right hand column from different times and different parts the website, maybe to attract people to explore more. I don't think they're doing this, or not so much, now. As far as I remember, I simply (helpfully, I hope?!) pointed out it was an old thread, since otherwise others would continue going to a lot of trouble to answer the original question, assuming (or so I thought) that it was a new/current question and that the OP was still around and needing answers.. and it was when the question was specifically related to the individual asking it, eg asking for recommendations for a particular purpose or conditions, rather than a more general discussion like that lovely, and still relevant thread Cori Ann linked to. I wonder if I may on occasion have been impatient and cut someone off at some point, unnecessarily? If so, I do apologise and will be extra careful in future not to do so. Caroline, just measured up for you. Width end to end is 10 feet, 5 inches. Width of TV section is 5 feet. Depth of mantel level shelves are 11" and 10" for upper 2 shelves. Base cabinet depth is 16 inches. Hope that helps. It adds a substantial focal point to the space and IMO, really finishes off the room. We had them built during our kitchen remodel on the afternoon that the contractor was waiting for the drywall plaster to dry. He used all leftover materials and charged us next to nothing to do them since he was here anyhow. I've learned that bundling projects together offers major cost efficiencies because for the contractors it's worth their while to make a few extra bucks if they're here anyway and all their equipment is already set up.
