Brookhaven vs. Diamond (Thomasville) Cabinets
Comments (12)We just got BH cabinets but I never even considered using Home Depot or Lowes. The experience of the KD we used for Brookhaven blew me away. Quality wise, I think BH is much better than what you'd get at the big box stores but that could just be me. Our KD was amazing and worked with us to get what we wanted in our space. The quality of the BH cabinets in the showroom was really good and they seemed much sturdier than the ones at the big box stores or even through other Kitchen Designers. BH has a lot of different options - framed vs frameless (which we got), particleboard vs plywood (we got), tons of different inside features, really solid drawer glides and soft closes, etc. We wanted cherry and their cherry was really nice and much better looking than other lines. Note, we did not look at full custom cabinets and our KD actually told us that there was no need for us to look at their Wood-mode line since we could get exactly what we wanted with BH and spend about 30% less....See MoreBenefits of Ikea Cabinets vs Paint Old Cabinets?
Comments (9)I think Ikea cabs with lots of lower drawers are MUCH better, storage wise, than builder grade cabs. I have built-in-place builder grade with fixed shelves, and lots of wasted space from huge filler areas in the face frame. I only have 2 normal size drawers, and 5 little ones that are, literally, 3.5" wide inside. The drawer glides are low end, and not super smooth. Interiors are beat-up low-grade melamine particleboard, not looking too good. But if I were moving in 5 years, I would only paint (the doors AND the interiors that are beat up). Because, when I organized my kitchen, getting rid of everything I don't use, and adding a few organizer shelves from Container Store, it became very easy to find & access what I do use, even in my tiny low-end kitchen. If I were to retrofit 2 pullouts in the lowest shelves of 2 36"-wide cabinets, I'd be close enough, functionally, without the expense and hassle of replacing the cabinets....See MoreKitchenCraft vs Ikea cabinets
Comments (87)Not sure I should step back into these waters but after a lot of time, decision making, holdups with other parts of my house-my Ikea cabinets are currently being installed. They should measure for the (non Ikea) countertops later this week so we are close. The delay did allow me to take advantage of the Spring sale and save about $1000. Because I'm far from a store and had problems using the design software. I used a local service to design and deliver which has been horrible. Rude, missing pieces, wrong things ordered. But my contractor and I are slowly figuring out. We've removed EVERYTHING from the backsplash which will be slab marble-all of the lighting will be under cabinet and the outlets, plug mold. We also ended up removing the window as it was small and would have needed to be rebuilt because of leaks. The only decision I have left concerns a peninsula overhang which I'm leaning away from. Hopefully I will be able to post a picture of the completed soon....See MoreWhite Shaker Battle: Ikea vs the rest of the Cabinet World
Comments (69)This is a great thread and I've read it with lots of interest. I'm not as interested in IKEA vs. the rest as I am in frameless vs. framed. I grew up in Europe with frameless cabinets and have now lived in the US for nearly 30 years with various framed cabinets. I still like frameless better from what appears to me be a usability factor, but maybe that is all in my head, but the things that I'd like more information on is to figure out if this is just in my head. What is the inside dimension of a drawer for a say a 30" cabinet for the different brands, or use the 36" or an 18" as an example. The same goes for how much space is wasted in say in the 171" direction and the 143" direction due to the framed parts? It might not be much, but having gone from a large kitchen where I had plenty of storage and the frame was smaller to a smaller kitchen with framed cabinets that has more frame (I assume to save money on the doors) this is something that is really pushing me towards frameless feeling like it has less wasted space and be more comparable across lines of frameless cabinets vs. framed ones where that seems to vary by the manufacturer. One thing that to this day annoys me with the framed cabinets is the lip on the bottom shelf. I love it when I visit my mom and friends in Europe how easy it is to slide out a stack of plates from the bottom shelf and not have to go through the lift motion first....See Morekelvar
